Multipole tensor analysis of the resonant x-ray scattering by quadrupolar and magnetic order in DyB2C2
Resonant x-ray scattering (RXS) experiment has been performed for the (3 0
1.5) superlattice reflection in the antiferroquadrupolar and antiferromagnetic
phase of DyB2C2. Azimuthal-angle dependence of the resonance enhanced
intensities for both dipolar (E1) and quadrupolar (E2) resonant processes has
been measured precisely with polarization analysis. Every scattering channel
exhibits distinctive azimuthal dependence, differently from the symmetric
reflection at (0 0 0.5) which was studied previously. We have analyzed the
results using a theory developed by Lovesey et al., which directly connects
atomic tensors with the cross-section of RXS. The fitting results indicate that
the azimuthal dependences can be explained well by the atomic tensors up to
rank 2. Rank 3 and rank 4 tensors are reflected in the data very little. In
addition, The coupling scheme among the 4f quadrupolar moment, 5d ortitals, and
the lattice has been determined from the interference among the Thomson
scattering from the lattice distortion and the resonant scatterings of E1 and
E2 processes. It has also been established from the RXS of the (3 0 1.5)
reflection that the canting of the 4f quadrupolar moments exists up to T_Q. We
also discuss a possible wavefunction of the ground state from the point-charge

Evaluating the effectiveness of rosuvastatin in preventing the progression of diastolic dysfunction in aortic stenosis: A substudy of the aortic stenosis progression observation measuring effects of rosuvastatin (ASTRONOMER) study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) is a noninvasive echocardiographic method for the diagnosis of diastolic dysfunction in patients with varying degrees of aortic stenosis (AS). Little is known however, on the utility of TDI in the serial assessment of diastolic abnormalities in AS.</p> <p>Objective</p> <p>The aim of the current proposal was to examine whether treatment with rosuvastatin was successful in improving diastolic abnormalities in patients enrolled in the Aortic Stenosis Progression Observation Measuring Effects of Rosuvastatin (ASTRONOMER) study.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Conventional Doppler indices including peak early (E) and late (A) transmitral velocities, and E/A ratio were measured from spectral Doppler. Tissue Doppler measurements including early (E') and late (A') velocities of the lateral annulus were determined, and E/E' was calculated.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The study population included 168 patients (56 ± 13 years), whose AS severity was categorized based on peak velocity at baseline (Group I: 2.5-3.0 m/s; Group II: 3.1-3.5 m/s; Group III: 3.6-4.0 m/s). Baseline and follow-up hemodynamics, LV dimensions and diastolic functional parameters were evaluated in all three groups. There was increased diastolic dysfunction from baseline to follow-up in each of the placebo and rosuvastatin groups. In patients with increasing severity of AS in Groups I and II, the lateral E' was lower and the E/E' (as an estimate of increased left ventricular end-diastolic pressure) was higher at baseline (p < 0.05). However, treatment with rosuvastatin did not affect the progression of diastolic dysfunction from baseline to 3.5 year follow-up between patients in any of the three predefined groups.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In patients with mild to moderate asymptomatic AS, rosuvastatin did not attenuate the progression of diastolic dysfunction.</p
Resonant X-Ray Magnetic Scattering from CoO
We analyze the recent experiment [W. Neubeck {\em et al.}, Phys. Rev. B
\vol(60,1999,R9912)] for the resonant x-ray magnetic scattering (RXMS) around
the K edge of Co in the antiferromagnet CoO. We propose a mechanism of the RXMS
to make the states couple to the magnetic order: the intraatomic exchange
interaction between the and the states and the - mixing to the
states of neighboring Co atoms. These couplings induce the orbital moment
in the states and make the scattering tensor antisymmetric. Using a
cluster model, we demonstrate that this modification gives rise to a large RXMS
intensity in the dipole process, in good agreement with the experiment. We also
find that the pre-edge peak is generated by the transition to the states
in the quadrupole process, with negligible contribution of the dipole process.

Every year, suicide is among the top 20 leading causes of death globally for all ages. Unfortunately, suicide is difficult to prevent, in large part because the prevalence of risk factors is high among the general population. In this review, clinical and psychological risk factors are examined and methods for suicide prevention are discussed. Prevention strategies found to be effective in suicide prevention
include means restriction, responsible media coverage, and general public education, as well identification methods such as screening, gatekeeper training, and primary care physician education. Although the treatment for preventing suicide is difficult, follow-up that includes pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, or both may be useful. However, prevention methods cannot be restricted to the individual. Community, social, and policy interventions will also be essentia
Magnetoelastic stresses in rare-earth thin films and superlattices
We report on the study of the magnetoelastic behavior of some rare-earth based thin films and superlattices (SL`s). Magnetoelastic stress (MS) measurements (by using a cantilever capacitive technique) within a wide range of temperatures (10-300 K) and magnetic fields (up to 12 T) have been performed. We derive expressions relating the cantilever curvatures and the magnetoelastic stresses in anisotropic thin films and SL`s (for cubic symmetry) deposited onto crystalline substrates. The magnetoelastic energy associated to the interfaces and the epitaxial stress dependence of the volume MS has been investigated by studying the basal plane MS in Hon/Lu₁₅ and in Ho₁₀/Ym SL`s: we obtain interface MS even higher than the volume ones and the effect in bulk`s MS of the epitaxial strain is large. In Dy/Y and Er/Lu SL's we also deduce the MS contributions but, for Er/Lu, incomplete saturation leads to inconclusive results. Although the latter case also happens in Ho/Tm SL`s, MS clearly shows anisotropy competition. In TbFe₂ (t) / YFe₂(1000 Å) (300 Å < t < 1300 Å) epitaxial bilayers, we determine all the MS allowed by the symmetry and show that epitaxial stress strongly modifies the tetragonal MS. Beyond the disk: EUV coronagraphic observations of the Extreme Ultraviolet Imager on board Solar Orbiter
Context. Most observations of the solar corona beyond 2 R consist of broadband visible light imagery carried out with coronagraphs. The associated diagnostics mainly consist of kinematics and derivations of the electron number density. While the measurement of the properties of emission lines can provide crucial additional diagnostics of the coronal plasma (temperatures, velocities, abundances, etc.), these types of observations are comparatively rare. In visible wavelengths, observations at these heights are limited to total eclipses. In the ultraviolet (UV) to extreme UV (EUV) range, very few additional observations have been achieved since the pioneering results of the Ultraviolet Coronagraph Spectrometer (UVCS). Aims. One of the objectives of the Full Sun Imager (FSI) channel of the Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUI) on board the Solar Orbiter mission has been to provide very wide field-of-view EUV diagnostics of the morphology and dynamics of the solar atmosphere in temperature regimes that are typical of the lower transition region and of the corona. Methods. FSI carries out observations in two narrowbands of the EUV spectrum centered on 17.4 nm and 30.4 nm that are dominated, respectively, by lines of FeIX/X (formed in the corona around 1 MK) and by the resonance line of HeII (formed around 80 kK in the lower transition region). Unlike previous EUV imagers, FSI includes a moveable occulting disk that can be inserted in the optical path to reduce the amount of instrumental stray light to a minimum. Results. FSI detects signals at 17.4 nm up to the edge of its field of view (7 R), which is about twice further than was previously possible. Operation at 30.4 nm are for the moment compromised by an as-yet unidentified source of stray light. Comparisons with observations by the LASCO and Metis coronagraphs confirm the presence of morphological similarities and differences between the broadband visible light and EUV emissions, as documented on the basis of prior eclipse and space-based observations. Conclusions. The very-wide-field observations of FSI out to about 3 and 7 R, without and with the occulting disk, respectively, are paving the way for future dedicated instruments
