Effects of tianeptine on vigilance and memory in young healthy volunteers

Tianeptine is a new antidepressant that, in animals, has a facilitating effect on both working and reference memory. To investigate the effects of tineptine on vigilance and memory in humans, a placebo-controlled cross-over study was performed in 20 healthy volunteers. The duration of each treatment period was 7 days and the dosage of tianeptine 37.5 mg per day. The evaluations consisted of 3 computerized tests assessing alert function, continuous recognition and semantic facilitation. A memory questionnaire and the Re test (15 words) were added. The analysis of variance (cross-over type) performed on the results did not show any significant difference between the evolution of these tests on tianeptine and on placebo in young healthy subjects, at the height of their intellectual capacities. In this study, tianeptine respected the vigilance as well as the performances of the healthy volunteers and did not impair their memory and cognitive processes, which distinguishes it from many psychotropic drugs. Nevertheless, tianeptine did not produce a facilitating effect on these processes in healthy volunteers. These results allow us to propose new clinical trial with tianeptine in order to investigate its effects on older volunteers and patients complaining of memory disorders

Taking into account local practices and indigenous knowledge in an emergency conservation context in Madagascar

At the 5th World Parks Congress, held in Durban, South Africa in 2003, the President of Madagascar committed his government to tripling the country's protected zones over the next 5 years. The announcement reflected a desire to combine rapid conservation efforts with sustainable development. Conservationists in Madagascar focused their attention on the endemic baobab tree, Adansonia grandidieri. This paper aims to identify the contradictions between the political emergency of the biodiversity conservation effort and local development needs. Eighty-three semi-structured interviews were conducted in two villages near the protected area of "Baobab Alley' in the Menabe region. Malagasy conservationists believed the area's protected status would benefit the local economy through eco-tourism. However, the conservation actions undertaken there display limited understanding of local dynamics and conflict with farmers' needs. To protect the baobabs, the government has prohibited rice cultivation without providing compensation. We show that the multifunctional baobab tree is integrated into an agroforestry system and protected by farmers. Based on these results, we address the issue of how to combine conservation and local development objectives through the involvement of farmers and the recognition of local knowledge in tree management. We also demonstrate that an emergency approach to conservation is not conducive to the successful integration of conservation and development

Lack of cardiovascular side effects of the new tricyclic antidepressant tianeptine. A double-blind, placebo-controlled study in young healthy volunteers.

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study, the effects of therapeutic doses of the new tricyclic antidepressant tianeptine on cardiovascular function were closely monitored in 21 healthy volunteers during a 2-week treatment period. Blood pressure measurements, ECG recording, 24-h Holter monitoring, and echocardiography were carried out at 1-week intervals. Isotopic ventriculography was measured twice under each treatment. Tianeptine did not produce orthostatic hypotension or increase heart rate. No ECG changes could be observed and the cardiac conduction time remained unchanged. One subject presented with an increase in frequency of ventricular premature beats that could not be definitely attributed to the drug. Cardiac output assessed at rest and after a bicycle exercise stress test was not altered. The present study suggests that tianeptine is a tricyclic antidepressant endowed with less cardiac toxicity than classical tricyclic antidepressants.Clinical TrialControlled Clinical TrialJournal Articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe
