Contact line motion for partially wetting fluids
We study the flow close to an advancing contact line in the limit of small
capillary number. To take into account wetting effects, both long and
short-ranged contributions to the disjoining pressure are taken into account.
In front of the contact line, there is a microscopic film corresponding to a
minimum of the interaction potential. We compute the parameters of the contact
line solution relevant to the matching to a macroscopic problem, for example a
spreading droplet. The result closely resembles previous results obtained with
a slip model
Ultrahigh magnetic field spectroscopy reveals the band structure of the 3D topological insulator BiSe
We have investigated the band structure at the point of the
three-dimensional (3D) topological insulator BiSe using
magneto-spectroscopy over a wide range of energies (\,eV) and in
ultrahigh magnetic fields up to 150\,T. At such high energies (\,eV) the
parabolic approximation for the massive Dirac fermions breaks down and the
Landau level dispersion becomes nonlinear. At even higher energies around 0.99
and 1.6 eV, new additional strong absorptions are observed with a temperature
and magnetic-field dependence which suggest that they originate from higher
band gaps. Spin orbit splittings for the further lying conduction and valence
bands are found to be 0.196 and 0.264 eV

The projected impact of the COVID-19 lockdown on breast cancer deaths in England due to the cessation of population screening: a national estimation
BACKGROUND: Population breast screening services in England were suspended in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Here, we estimate the number of breast cancers whose detection may be delayed because of the suspension, and the potential impact on cancer deaths over 10 years. METHODS: We estimated the number and length of screening delays from observed NHS Breast Screening System data. We then estimated additional breast cancer deaths from three routes: asymptomatic tumours progressing to symptomatically diagnosed disease, invasive tumours which remain screen-detected but at a later date, and ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) progressing to invasive disease by detection. We took progression rates, prognostic characteristics, and survival rates from published sources. RESULTS: We estimated that 1,489,237 women had screening delayed by around 2–7 months between July 2020 and June 2021, leaving 745,277 outstanding screens. Depending on how quickly this backlog is cleared, around 2500–4100 cancers would shift from screen-detected to symptomatic cancers, resulting in 148–452 additional breast cancer deaths. There would be an additional 164–222 screen-detected tumour deaths, and 71–97 deaths from DCIS that progresses to invasive cancer. CONCLUSIONS: An estimated 148–687 additional breast cancer deaths may occur as a result of the pandemic-related disruptions. The impact depends on how quickly screening services catch up with delays
CA 15-3 is predictive of response and disease recurrence following treatment in locally advanced breast cancer
BACKGROUND: Primary chemotherapy (PC) is used for down-staging locally advanced breast cancer (LABC). CA 15-3 measures the protein product of the MUC1 gene and is the most widely used serum marker in breast cancer. METHODS: We retrospectively investigated the role of CA 15-3 in conjunction with other clinico-pathological variables as a predictor of response and time to disease recurrence following treatment in LABC. Pre and post primary chemotherapy serum concentrations of CA 15-3 together with other variables were reviewed and related to four outcomes following primary chemotherapy (clinical response, pathological response, time to recurrence and time to progression). Persistently elevated CA 15-3 after PC was considered as consecutively high levels above the cut off point during and after PC. RESULTS: 73 patients were included in this study. Patients received PC (AC or AC-T regimen) for locally advanced breast cancer. 54 patients underwent surgery. The median follow up was 790 days. Patients with high concentrations of CA 15-3 before PC treatment had a poor clinical (p = 0.013) and pathological (p = 0.044) response. Together with Her-2/neu expression (p = 0.009) and tumour lympho-vascular space invasion (LVI) (p = 0.001), a persistently elevated CA 15-3 post PC (p = 0.007) was an independent predictive factor of recurrence following treatment in LABC. CONCLUSION: Elevated CA 15-3 level is predictive of a poor response to chemotherapy. In addition, persistently elevated CA 15-3 levels post chemotherapy in conjunction with lympho-vascular invasion and HER2 status predict a reduced disease free survival following treatment in locally advanced breast cancer
