Novel approaches in optical coherence tomography for high-resolution imaging of biological tissues (Pléniaire)

International audienceOptical coherence tomography (OCT) is an established technique for three-dimensional imaging of biological tissues with micrometer-scale resolution. Commercially available OCT devices are employed in diverse medical applications, notably in ophthalmology. OCT has also begun to be used in cardiology and has shown promise in dermatology. Imaging at high resolution with OCT is of particular interest to resolve subtle morphological changes of tissues for early medical diagnosis. Two novel high-resolution OCT techniques will be presented: Full-Field Optical Coherence Tomography (FF-OCT) and Line-field Confocal Optical Coherence Tomography (LC-OCT). FF-OCM is based on low-coherence interference microscopy, using full-field illumination with a low-coherence light source and detection with an area camera to acquire en face tomographic images. FF-OCM benefits from the transverse imaging resolution of optical microscopy (∼ 1.0 µm) along with the capacity of optical axial sectioning at micrometer-scale resolution. LC-OCT was introduced very recently for high-resolution B-scan (cross-sectional) imaging. The technique is based on line illumination and detection using a broadband spatially coherent light source and a line-scan camera in a two-beam interference microscope. Isotropic spatial resolution of ∼ 1.0 µm is achieved. In vivo cellular-level resolution imaging of skin is demonstrated in real-time with a penetration of ∼ 500 µm

Robustness: a New Form of Heredity Motivated by Dynamic Networks

We investigate a special case of hereditary property in graphs, referred to as {\em robustness}. A property (or structure) is called robust in a graph $G$ if it is inherited by all the connected spanning subgraphs of $G$. We motivate this definition using two different settings of dynamic networks. The first corresponds to networks of low dynamicity, where some links may be permanently removed so long as the network remains connected. The second corresponds to highly-dynamic networks, where communication links appear and disappear arbitrarily often, subject only to the requirement that the entities are temporally connected in a recurrent fashion ({\it i.e.} they can always reach each other through temporal paths). Each context induces a different interpretation of the notion of robustness. We start by motivating the definition and discussing the two interpretations, after what we consider the notion independently from its interpretation, taking as our focus the robustness of {\em maximal independent sets} (MIS). A graph may or may not admit a robust MIS. We characterize the set of graphs \forallMIS in which {\em all} MISs are robust. Then, we turn our attention to the graphs that {\em admit} a robust MIS (\existsMIS). This class has a more complex structure; we give a partial characterization in terms of elementary graph properties, then a complete characterization by means of a (polynomial time) decision algorithm that accepts if and only if a robust MIS exists. This algorithm can be adapted to construct such a solution if one exists

À partir d’une étude croisée de la littérature savante sur la polychromie antique et industrielle et de données issues d’une enquête de terrain sur une architecture contemporaine qui prend ses distances avec les couleurs fonctionnelles de l’architecture moderniste, cet article montre qu’une approche ethnographique des pratiques coloristes permet de dégager une historiographie largement sous-évaluée des travaux sur l’art coloriste en architecture moderne. En rendant compte des entretiens que j’ai eus avec Patrick Bouchain et Daniel Buren sur leurs positions théoriques sur la coloration des murs et en confrontant leurs réponses aux théoriciens du XIXe siècle en Europe, j’aborde la délicate question de la coloration du Centre Pompidou Mobile. Relève-t-elle ou non d’une démarche « décorative » ?Based on a cross-examination of scholarly literature on antique and industrial polychromy and data from a fieldwork about a contemporary architecture that takes its distances from the functional colors of modernist architecture, this paper examines how an ethnographic approach to colorist practices reveals a widely undervalued historiography on colorist art in modern architecture. In reviewing the interviews I had with Patrick Bouchain and Daniel Buren about their ideas about coloring of walls and in comparing their answers to the nineteenth-century european theorists, I address the delicate question of the coloring of the Center Pompidou Mobile. Evaluation du rôle du Distribus au sein du dispositif lausannois d'échange de matériel stérile

A Lausanne, dans le cadre du Programme cantonal de prévention des maladies transmissibles, cinq structures pratiquent l'échange de matériel stérile. [...] Fin 2004, le constat tiré après une année et demi de pratique était double : d'une part une augmentation importante et linéaire du matériel remis par UniSET, jusqu'à plus de 2000 seringues par mois et, d'autre part, une augmentation de problèmes d'ordre public, à savoir l'abandon de matériel usagé dans l'espace public (toilettes, parking, parcs, etc.) avec les questions de santé publique, de voirie et de nettoyage que cela peut soulever. Face à ces constats, la Ville de Lausanne et les intervenants du Dispositif Seuil-Bas (DSB), en collaboration avec le Programme cantonal, ont mis sur pied un bus d'échange de matériel stérile, permettant ainsi de favoriser le retour de ce matériel et de pratiquer l'échange dans de meilleures conditions. A multi-temporal model calibration approach has been suggested as an alternative, and we evaluate this using 13,000 years of data. Location Europe. Methods We used fossil-based records of presence for Picea abies, Abies alba and Fagus sylvatica and six climatic variables for the period 13,000 to 1000yr bp. To measure the contribution of each 1000-year time step to the total niche of each species (the niche measured by pooling all the data), we employed a principal components analysis (PCA) calibrated with data over the entire range of possible climates. Then we projected both the total niche and the partial niches from single time frames into the PCA space, and tested if the partial niches were more similar to the total niche than random. Using an ensemble forecasting approach, we calibrated SDMs for each time frame and for the pooled database. We projected each model to current climate and evaluated the results against current pollen data. We also projected all models into the future. Results Niche similarity between the partial and the total-SDMs was almost always statistically significant and increased through time. SDMs calibrated from single time frames gave different results when projected to current climate, providing evidence of a change in the species realized niches through time. Moreover, they predicted limited climate suitability when compared with the total-SDMs. The same results were obtained when projected to future climates. Main conclusions The realized climatic niche of species differed for current and future climates when SDMs were calibrated considering different past climates. Building the niche as an ensemble through time represents a way forward to a better understanding of a species' range and its ecology in a changing climate

Evaluation du projet "Nuit blanche ?" à Genève 2006-2007 : l'avis des partenaires

Ce [deuxième] rapport se décompose en quatre chapitres : le premier présente l'évolution de la situation, d'une part sur le plan épidémiologique de la consommation de psychotropes, et d'autre part du point de vue du projet "Nuit blanche ?". Ce chapitre résume aussi le mandat d'évaluation. Les deux chapitres suivants répondent aux questions d'évaluation : le chapitre 2 est consacré aux partenaires de "Nuit blanche ?" et à l'appréciation qu'ils font du projet et le chapitre 3 analyse le profil de la population touchée par les interventions de "Nuit blanche ?" en 2006-2007. Finalement, le quatrième chapitre présente une synthèse des réponses aux questions d'évaluation et propose quelques pistes pour la suite du projet aux travers de quelques recommandations.
