Periodic orbits in deterministic discrete-time evolutionary game dynamics: An information-theoretic perspective
Even though existence of non-convergent evolution of the states of
populations in ecological and evolutionary contexts is an undeniable fact,
insightful game-theoretic interpretations of such outcomes are scarce in the
literature of evolutionary game theory. As a proof-of-concept, we tap into the
information-theoretic concept of relative entropy in order to construct a
game-theoretic interpretation for periodic orbits in a wide class of
deterministic discrete-time evolutionary game dynamics, primarily investigating
the two-player two-strategy case. Effectively, we present a consistent
generalization of the evolutionarily stable strategy -- the cornerstone of the
evolutionary game theory -- and aptly term the generalized concept: information
stable orbit. The information stable orbit captures the essence of the
evolutionarily stable strategy in that it compares the total payoff obtained
against an evolving mutant with the total payoff that the mutant gets while
playing against itself. Furthermore, we discuss the connection of the
information stable orbit with the dynamical stability of the corresponding

Homologous overexpression of hydrogenase and glycerol dehydrogenase in Clostridium pasteurianum to enhance hydrogen production from crude glycerol
This study reports engineering of a hypertransformable variant of C. pasteurianum for bioconversion of glycerol into hydrogen (H2). A functional glycerol-triggered hydrogen pathway was engineered based on two approaches: (1) increasing product yield by overexpression of immediate enzyme catalyzing H2 production, (2) increasing substrate uptake by overexpression of enzymes involved in glycerol utilization. The first strategy aimed at overexpression of hydA gene encoding hydrogenase, and the second one, through combination of overexpression of dhaD1 and dhaK genes encoding glycerol dehydrogenase and dihydroxyacetone kinase. These genetic manipulations resulted in two recombinant strains (hydA ++ /dhaD1K ++) capable of producing 97% H2 (v/v), with yields of 1.1 mol H2/mol glycerol in hydA overexpressed strain, and 0.93 mol H2/mol glycerol in dhaD1K overexpressed strain, which was 1.5 fold higher than wild type. Among two strains, dhaD1K ++ consumed more glycerol than hydA ++ which proves that overexpression of glycerol enzymes has enhanced glycerol intake rate
Footprinting of Inhibitor Interactions of In Silico Identified Inhibitors of Trypanothione Reductase of Leishmania Parasite
Structure-based virtual screening of NCI Diversity set II compounds was performed to indentify novel inhibitor scaffolds of trypanothione reductase (TR) from Leishmania infantum. The top 50 ranked hits were clustered using the AuPoSOM tool. Majority of the top-ranked compounds were Tricyclic. Clustering of hits yielded four major clusters each comprising varying number of subclusters differing in their mode of binding and orientation in the active site. Moreover, for the first time, we report selected alkaloids and dibenzothiazepines as inhibitors of Leishmania infantum TR. The mode of binding observed among the clusters also potentiates the probable in vitro inhibition kinetics and aids in defining key interaction which might contribute to the inhibition of enzymatic reduction of T[S] 2. The method provides scope for automation and integration into the virtual screening process employing docking softwares, for clustering the small molecule inhibitors based upon protein-ligand interactions
Coexistence of coordination and anticoordination in nonlinear public goods game
There is a plethora of instances of interactions between players, in both biological and socio-economical context, that can be modeled as the paradigmatic PGG. However, in such interactions, arguably the PGG is often nonlinear in nature. This is because the increment in benefit generated, owing to additional cost contributed by the players, is realistically seldom linear. Furthermore, sometimes a social good is created due to interspecific interactions, e.g. in cooperative hunting by animals of two different species. In this paper, we study the evolutionary dynamics of a heterogenous population of cooperators and defectors playing nonlinear PGG; here we define heterogenous population as the one composed of distinct subpopulations with interactions among them. We employ the replicator equations for this investigation, and present the non-trivial effects of nonlinearity and size of the groups involved in the game. We report the possibility of discoordination, and coexistence of coordination and anti-coordination in such nonlinear PGG
Quantitative Proteome Analysis of <i>Leishmania donovani</i> under Spermidine Starvation
<div><p>We have earlier reported antileishmanial activity of hypericin by spermidine starvation. In the current report, we have used label free proteome quantitation approach to identify differentially modulated proteins after hypericin treatment. A total of 141 proteins were found to be differentially regulated with ANOVA P value less than 0.05 in hypericin treated <i>Leishmania</i> promastigotes. Differentially modulated proteins have been broadly classified under nine major categories. Increase in ribosomal protein S7 protein suggests the repression of translation. Inhibition of proteins related to ubiquitin proteasome system, RNA binding protein and translation initiation factor also suggests altered translation. We have also observed increased expression of Hsp 90, Hsp 83–1 and stress inducible protein 1. Significant decreased level of cyclophilin was observed. These stress related protein could be cellular response of the parasite towards hypericin induced cellular stress. Also, defective metabolism, biosynthesis and replication of nucleic acids, flagellar movement and signalling of the parasite were observed as indicated by altered expression of proteins involved in these pathways. The data was analyzed rigorously to get further insight into hypericin induced parasitic death.</p></div
