Learning with Augmented Features for Heterogeneous Domain Adaptation
We propose a new learning method for heterogeneous domain adaptation (HDA),
in which the data from the source domain and the target domain are represented
by heterogeneous features with different dimensions. Using two different
projection matrices, we first transform the data from two domains into a common
subspace in order to measure the similarity between the data from two domains.
We then propose two new feature mapping functions to augment the transformed
data with their original features and zeros. The existing learning methods
(e.g., SVM and SVR) can be readily incorporated with our newly proposed
augmented feature representations to effectively utilize the data from both
domains for HDA. Using the hinge loss function in SVM as an example, we
introduce the detailed objective function in our method called Heterogeneous
Feature Augmentation (HFA) for a linear case and also describe its
kernelization in order to efficiently cope with the data with very high
dimensions. Moreover, we also develop an alternating optimization algorithm to
effectively solve the nontrivial optimization problem in our HFA method.
Comprehensive experiments on two benchmark datasets clearly demonstrate that
HFA outperforms the existing HDA methods.Comment: ICML201
Calculation of single-beam two-photon absorption transition rate of rare-earth ions using effective operator and diagrammatic representation
Effective operators needed in single-beam two-photon transition calculations
have been represented with modified Goldstone diagrams similar to the type
suggested by Duan and co-workers [J. Chem. Phys. 121, 5071 (2004) ]. The rules
to evaluate these diagrams are different from those for effective Hamiltonian
and one-photon transition operators. It is verified that the perturbation terms
considered contain only connected diagrams and the evaluation rules are
simplified and given explicitly.Comment: 10 preprint pages, to appear in Journal of Alloys and Compound
Experimental study of a counter-flow regenerative evaporative cooler
This paper aims to investigate the operational performance and impact factors of a counter-flow regenerative evaporative cooler (REC). This was undertaken through a dedicated experimental process. Temperature, humidity and flow rate of the air flows at the inlet, outlet and exhaust opening of the cooler were tested under various operational conditions, i.e., different inlet air conditions, feed water temperature and evaporation rate were also correspondingly measured. It was found that the wet-bulb effectiveness of the presented cooler ranged from 0.55 to 1.06 with Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) rated from 2.8 to 15.5. The major experimental results were summarised below: 1) the wet-bulb effectiveness was significantly enhanced through either ways of increasing inlet wet-bulb depression or reducing intake air velocity, or alternatively by increasing working-to-intake air ratio; 2) the cooling capacity and EER of cooler was rapidly increased by means of increasing inlet wet-bulb depression or increasing intake air velocity, or reducing working-to-intake air ratio instead; 3) the effectiveness reduced by less 5% while feed water temperature increased from 18.9 to 23.1°C; 4) apparent acceleration in water evaporation rate was gained from increasing inlet wet-bulb depression or air velocity. The presented cooler showed 31% increase in wet-bulb effectiveness and 40% growth in EER compared to conventional indirect evaporative cooler. The research helped identifying the performance of a new REC with enhanced performance and thus contributed to development of energy efficient air conditioning technologies, which eventually lead to significant energy saving and carbon emissions reduction in air conditioning sector
New Genes from an Ancient Plant - Mining Vitis sylvestris
In this study, we show genotypic differences in abundance and profiles of stilbenes in V. sylvestris that are induced in response to a UV-C pulse. We also show the strong induction of stilbene synthase transcripts in Hoe29 (a representative genotype of the strong stilbene producers) linked with an elevated induction of the transcription factor MYB14 and suggest that a particular region in the promotor of MYB14 harbours potential as candidate target for resistance breeding
4-[(Ethoxyimino)(phenyl)methyl]-5-methyl-2-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-3(2H)-one
In the molecule of the title compound, C19H19N3O2, the central pyrazole ring makes dihedral angles of 9.89 (3) and 66.06 (5)° with the two phenyl rings, and the two phenyl rings form an angle of 74.05 (5)°. An intramolecular C—H⋯O hydrogen bond forms a six-membered ring, producing an S(6) ring motif. In the crystal structure, intermolecular N—H⋯O and C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds link each molecule to two others, forming an infinite one-dimensional supramolecular structure along the c axis
