    Dynamical Behavior of a stochastic SIRS epidemic model

    In this paper we study the Kernack - MacKendrick model under telegraph noise. The telegraph noise switches at random between two SIRS models. We give out conditions for the persistence of the disease and the stability of a disease free equilibrium. We show that the asymptotic behavior highly depends on the value of a threshold λ\lambda which is calculated from the intensities of switching between environmental states, the total size of the population as well as the parameters of both SIRS systems. According to the value of λ\lambda, the system can globally tend towards an endemic case or a disease free case. The aim of this work is also to describe completely the omega-limit set of all positive solutions to the model. Moreover, the attraction of the omega-limit set and the stationary distribution of solutions will be pointed out.Comment: 16 page

    A dual adaptive tunable vibration absorber using MREs for vehicle powertrain vibration control

    This paper presents a dual Adaptive Tuned Vibration Absorber (ATVA) using a magnetorheological elastomer (MRE) for powertrain torsional vibration control. The MRE used in this device is a soft MRE with a significant MR effect. By using the MRE, the ATVA can work in a wide frequency range. In this paper, the dual ATVA is proposed rather than a single ATVA because a single ATVA, at a fixed location, cannot deal with resonances happening to several powertrain vibration modes. Also, the dual ATVA concept design is presented to validate its effectiveness. In addition the soft MRE shear modulus is approximated by a polynomial of magnetic flux intensity B and the approximation was experimentally validated. The simulation results showed that with the ATVA, powertrain vibration response is significantly suppressed. Furthermore, the effect of the dual ATVA parameters such as inertia moment, stiffness and damping coefficients and ATVA locations were examined. The dual ATVA will be useful device for powertrain vibration suppression. © 2010 SPIE

    MAP: Microblogging Assisted Profiling of TV Shows

    Online microblogging services that have been increasingly used by people to share and exchange information, have emerged as a promising way to profiling multimedia contents, in a sense to provide users a socialized abstraction and understanding of these contents. In this paper, we propose a microblogging profiling framework, to provide a social demonstration of TV shows. Challenges for this study lie in two folds: First, TV shows are generally offline, i.e., most of them are not originally from the Internet, and we need to create a connection between these TV shows with online microblogging services; Second, contents in a microblogging service are extremely noisy for video profiling, and we need to strategically retrieve the most related information for the TV show profiling.To address these challenges, we propose a MAP, a microblogging-assisted profiling framework, with contributions as follows: i) We propose a joint user and content retrieval scheme, which uses information about both actors and topics of a TV show to retrieve related microblogs; ii) We propose a social-aware profiling strategy, which profiles a video according to not only its content, but also the social relationship of its microblogging users and its propagation in the social network; iii) We present some interesting analysis, based on our framework to profile real-world TV shows

    Ocular trauma is an important cause of unilateral blindness and visual impairment across the world. Most injuries are accidental, work-related injuries in developed countries, while assaults predominate as a cause in developing countries. Trauma may result in various forms of ocular injuries, ranging from minor insult to major functional impairment. Any ocular structure may be involved, and a careful, systematic approach to the examination of a patient is essential to avoid missing occult injury and resultant visual impairment. This paper highlights key points regarding the clinical evaluation of patients with ocular trauma and covers the presentation and primary care management of the more common ocular injuries

    A novel dynamic absorber using enhanced magnetorheological elastomers for powertrain vibration control

    This paper presents a novel Adaptive Tuned Vibration Absorber (ATVA) using the enhanced magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) for powertrain vibration reduction. The MRE material used in this application includes micro-sized iron particles enhanced by adding nano-sized magnetic powders. With the enhancement, MRE's elastic modulus significantly increases due to the MR effect. In the new ATVA, the MRE plays a role as a torsional spring whose stiffness coefficient can be varied with an external magnetic field. Additionally, this ATVA could operate in shear-squeeze mode rather than shear mode. Thus, the frequency range is much wider than that of general MREs. Such property of the enhanced MRE is an advantage for constructing a smart ATVA for powertrain vibration control because the ATVA can work effectively in a wide frequency range instead of a narrow bandwidth as a conventional dynamic absorber does. Numerical simulations of a powertrain system for the second and third gear fitted with the ATVA are used to validate its effectiveness. The obtained results show that the powertrain vibration can be greatly suppressed. Particularly, the ATVA is effective in reducing the powertrain vibration not only in case of the single harmonic excitation but also for the case of the multi-harmonic excitation. Furthermore, the simulation results can be used to optimize the ATVA's design, which will be our next work. © 2008 Trans Tech Publications

    Rotating system for four-dimensional transverse rms-emittance measurements

    Knowledge of the transverse four-dimensional beam rms-parameters is essential for applications that involve lattice elements that couple the two transverse degrees of freedom (planes). Of special interest is the removal of inter-plane correlations to reduce the projected emittances. A dedicated ROtating System for Emittance measurements (ROSE) has been proposed, developed, and successfully commissioned to fully determine the four-dimensional beam matrix. This device has been used at the High Charge injector (HLI) at GSI using a beam line which is composed of a skew quadrupole triplet, a normal quadrupole doublet, and ROSE. Mathematical algorithms, measurements, and results for ion beams of 83Kr13+ at 1.4 MeV/u are reported in this paper.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figure
