Monetary policy shocks in a DSGE model with a shadow banking system
This paper is motivated by the recent financial crisis and addresses whether a “too low for too long” interest rate policy may generate a boom-bust cycle. We suggest a model in which a microfounded shadow banking sector is included in an otherwise state-of-the-art DSGE model. When faced with perverse incentives, financial intermediaries within the shadow banking sector can divert a fraction of stockholders’ profits for their own benefits and extend credit at a discounted rate. The model predicts that long periods of accommodative monetary policy do create the preconditions for, but do not cause per se, a boom-bust cycle. Rather, it is the combination of a persistent monetary ease with microeconomic distortions in the financial system that causes a boom-bust.monetary policy; DSGE model; shadow banking system; boom-bust
On the global uniqueness for the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar field system with a cosmological constant. Part 2: Structure of the solutions and stability of the Cauchy horizon
This paper is the second part of a trilogy dedicated to the following
problem: given spherically symmetric characteristic initial data for the
Einstein-Maxwell-scalar field system with a cosmological constant ,
with the data on the outgoing initial null hypersurface given by a subextremal
Reissner-Nordstrom black hole event horizon, study the future extendibility of
the corresponding maximal globally hyperbolic development as a "suitably
regular" Lorentzian manifold.
In the first paper of this sequence, we established well posedness of the
characteristic problem with general initial data.
In this second paper, we generalize the results of Dafermos on the stability
of the radius function at the Cauchy horizon by including a cosmological
constant. This requires a considerable deviation from the strategy followed by
Dafermos, focusing on the level sets of the radius function instead of the
red-shift and blue-shift regions. We also present new results on the global
structure of the solution when the free data is not identically zero in a
neighborhood of the origin.
In the third and final paper, we will consider the issue of mass inflation
and extendibility of solutions beyond the Cauchy horizon.Comment: 44 pages, 13 figures; v2: a few small changes; v3: a paragraph was

Inter ENSO variability and its influence over the South American monsoon system
Previous studies have discussed the interannual variability of a meridional seesaw of dry and wet conditions over South America (SA) associated to the modulation of the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ). However, they did not explore if the variability inter ENSO (El Niño Southern Oscillation) can be related to the phase changes of this dipole. To answer this question, an observational work was carried out to explore the atmospheric and Sea Surface Temperature (SST) conditions related to the same ENSO signal and to opposite dipole phases. <P style="line-height: 20px;"> Rotated Empirical Orthogonal Function (REOF) analysis was applied over normalized Chen precipitation seasonal anomalies in order to find the dipole mode in the Austral Summer (December to February). The fourth rotated mode, explaining 6.6% of the total variance, consists of positive loading over the SACZ region and negative loading over northern Argentina. Extreme events were selected and enhanced activity of SACZ during the Summer season (SACZ+) was identified in nine years: five during La Niña events (LN) and two in El Niño episodes (EN). On the other hand, inhibited manifestations of this system (SACZ-) were identified in seven years: four in EN and two during LN. <P style="line-height: 20px;"> Power spectrum analysis indicated that the interannual variability of the precipitation dipole seems to be related to the low frequency and to the quasi-biennial part of ENSO variability. The ENSO events with the same signal can present opposite phases for the dipole. The results suggest that the displacement of the convection over Indonesia and western Pacific can play an important role to modulate the seesaw pattern
