The Gender Pay Gap for Private Sector Employees in Canada and Britain

This paper uses British and Canadian linked employer-employee data to investigate the importance of the workplace for the gender wage gap. Implementing a novel decomposition approach, we find substantial unexplained wage gaps in the private sector of both countries. Whilst this wage differential is partially offset by women, on average, receiving a workplace specific return which is relatively higher than that paid to men, a substantial and significant unexplained within workplace wage gap remains which is considerably higher in Britain than in Canada. The results are consistent with a prima facie argument that country-specific factors, such as the wage setting environment, are important determinants in explaining the relative size of the gender wage gap.

A New View of the Male/Female Pay Gap

We construct a new time series on the Canadian female/male pay ratio. The new series is based on wage data rather than the earnings data that has been used in the past. Wages more closely correspond to the price of labour, which is the focus of most theories of labour market discrimination and public policies in this area. Earnings based estimates combine gender differences in wages with gender differences in decisions of how much to work (i.e., hours). Our results reveal significant differences between the wage and earnings based series. Most importantly the wage series reveals that women have continued to make progress in the last fifteen years. In 2006 the wage based ratio is 0.85 while the earnings based ratio is only 0.72. We also find that as the gender wage ratio has risen, the remaining gap in wages is increasingly unexplained in the sense that it cannot be accounted for by gender differences in characteristics that the labour market values.Gender Pay Gap, Wages, Earnings

L’empowerment et intervention familiale : concept paradoxal occultant parfois la pauvreté

Les compressions budgétaires dans les services sociaux, d’éducation et d’appuis à la famille sont omniprésentes. À l’hiver 1996, le gouvernement Harris annonçait une restructurationéventuelle des services de santé mentale à l’enfance fondée sur l’efficience ciblée. On mise surune intervention précoce, brève, intensive et efficace. L’empowerment des individus et desfamilles semble une voie à explorer. Cet article vise à cerner cette notion et ses divers courants,puis à l’appliquer à l’intervention familiale individualisée selon une perspective écologique.Sans en faire une analyse approfondie, nous saisirons au départ les énoncés ministériels parrapport à la pauvreté et au travail avec les familles. L’évaluation d’une intervention préventive auprès d’adolescents et d’adolescentes ou Quand les garçons nous font nous interroger

L'animation théâtrale a été utilisée durant trois périodes scolaires en guise d'outil d'intervention préventive en matière de MTS-sida, auprès de 90 élèves de quatrième secondaire d'une polyvalente de la région de Québec. Cette expérience visait la promotion de la discussion entre l'élève et son ou sa partenaire à propos de leur sexualité et des diverses conduites de protection, dont l'utilisation du condom. La présente recherche a pour but d'évaluer les effets de cette intervention préventive. Un devis quasi expérimental quantitatif a donc été adopté. De plus, douze élèves des groupes expérimentaux (six filles et six garçons) ont été rencontrés en entrevue semi-dirigée. Les filles et les garçons réagissent différemment à l'animation théâtrale. Une attention particulière est apportée à la réaction distinctive des garçons; ces derniers nous fournissent des éclairages sur eux-mêmes et des pistes à poursuivre.The medium of dramatization was used during three classroom sessions at one high school in Quebec. Involving 90 students of grade II, these sketches focused on the prevention of STD’s and AIDS. This activity was intended to promote discussion between each student and his or her partner with respect to their shared sexuality and various methods of protection (among them, condoms). A follow-up study was undertaken to evaluate the results of this preventive exercise, entailing a quasiexperimental and qualitative formula. Twelve students from the study group (six males and six females) participated in semi-structured interviews. The reactions of female students to the dramatizations were different from those of the males. This article focuses on the male reactions and on some of their ideas to reach them in their issues

Un enjeu d’amour : des réflexions d’adolescentes sur leurs relations avec les garçons

Cet article présente l'analyse du point de vue de dix adolescentes usagères du Centre de santé des femmes de la Mauricie sur leurs relations avec les garçons. Ce thème fut étudié par rapport à leur processus contraceptif dans le cadre d'une recherche qualitative visant à sonder l'intégration de la définition féministe du concept d'autonomie chez ces usagères. Les données d'entrevue furent recueillies auprès d'un échantillon typique en début de 1987 et traitées selon une méthode d'analyse de contenu de représentation soit : les co-occurrences associatives. Malgré une image idéalisée de leur partenaire et idyllique de leurs amours, les adolescentes s'interrogent et tentent des démarches d'autonomie, quoique de façon plutôt intuitive
