A Demonstration Study of the Quiet Time Transcendental Meditation Program
This manuscript presents a demonstration study of Quiet Time (QT), a classroom-based Transcendental Meditation intervention. The aim of the study is to assess the feasibility of implementing and evaluating QT in two pilot settings in the United Kingdom and Ireland. This study contributes to the field by targeting middle childhood, testing efficiency in two settings operating under different educational systems, and including a large array of measures. First, teacher and pupil engagement with QT was assessed. Second, the feasibility of using a quasi-experimental design and a wide range of instruments to measure changes in pupil outcomes before and after the intervention was assessed. This allows us to obtain information about which instruments might be feasible to administer and most sensitive to change. The first setting included 89 students from a primary school in the United Kingdom: those in sixth grade received the QT intervention, while those in fifth grade practiced meditation using the Headspace application. The second setting included 100 fifth- and sixth-grade students from two schools in Ireland: one received the QT intervention, the other served as a control. Recruitment and retention rates were high in both settings, and the intervention was feasible and accepted by students, parents and teachers. Implementation fidelity was lower in the United Kingdom setting where delivery started later in the school year and the practice was affected by preparation for the Standard Assessment Tests. These results show that QT may be feasibly delivered in school settings, and suggest the use of a compact battery of tests to measure impact. We find suggestive evidence that the intervention affected executive function as children who practiced QT showed improved working memory in both settings. In the Irish setting, pupils in the QT group had improved ability to control responses. These results have implications for future studies by a) demonstrating that implementation fidelity is highly context dependent and b) providing suggestive evidence of the malleability of children’s skills in middle childhood. The results of this demonstration study will be used to inform a larger RCT of the QT intervention
Sub-optimal pain control in patients with rheumatic disease.
The visual analog scale (VAS) of pain is a ubiquitous clinical and research tool with widespread application in the rheumatic diseases. The objectives of this study were to assess if patients report pain differently to doctors or nurses, to determine reproducibility of this test for diagnosis, age, gender, and treatment, and to ascertain the level of pain in patients attending general rheumatology clinics. Using a standardized line of exactly 100 mm and instructions with identical wording, consecutive patients attending general rheumatology clinics were asked to score their perceived level of pain in the preceding week. Two assessments were carried out, one before and one after the clinic visit, and each patient was questioned by both a doctor and a nurse. Differences between the first and second VAS scores (VAS1 and VAS2) were recorded. One hundred and eight patients completed the study (69 female). VAS1 and VAS2 scores were administered by a similar number of doctors and nurses. There was no significant difference between mean VAS1 and VAS2 scores (41.1 vs. 41.4 mm, p = 0.78). VAS1 and VAS2 differed by \u3c4 mm in\u3e59% of patients. Age, gender, or diagnosis did not influence VAS1 or VAS2. Differences in scores were independent of which health professional administered the scale (p = 0.19). Patients taking painkillers had higher mean VAS scores (49 mm) compared with those not on analgesia (27 mm; p \u3c 0.001). Anti-rheumatic treatment did not influence pain scores (p = 0.13). The VAS is a reliable and effective method of pain assessment. Results are independent of which health professional administers the scale. Patients with rheumatic disease report their pain similarly regardless of diagnosis. However, pain control is sub-optimal in patients taking analgesia. Specific assessment of pain is, thus, important in patients attending rheumatology clinics

Partnering with Students to Connect Students
Too often outreaches and interventions designed to support students transitioning to higher education, are developed by academics who may not have a full understanding of the complexity and diversity of their students’ realities. This disconnect explains why, in most cases, interventions are reactive instead of proactive. In this article, we draw on our experiences in terms of the design and implementation of a Student Resource Centre (SRC) to advocate for student and staff collaborative design. The student-run initiative works with students as partners to constitute and operationalise an innovative near-peer mentoring and support space. The mixed-methods study draws on social-cultural learning theory on student engagement and reflective practice tools. We explain how a student’s sense of belonging is central to their success, progression, and graduation. This article highlights the need to contextualise and personalise institutional support for students
Impact of Electric Fields on Highly Excited Rovibrational States of Polar Dimers
We study the effect of a strong static homogeneous electric field on the
highly excited rovibrational levels of the LiCs dimer in its electronic ground
state. Our full rovibrational investigation of the system includes the
interaction with the field due to the permanent electric dipole moment and the
polarizability of the molecule. We explore the evolution of the states next to
the dissociation threshold as the field strength is increased. The rotational
and vibrational dynamics are influenced by the field; effects such as
orientation, angular motion hybridization and squeezing of the vibrational
motion are demonstrated and analyzed. The field also induces avoided crossings
causing a strong mixing of the electrically dressed rovibrational states.
Importantly, we show how some of these highly excited levels can be shifted to
the continuum as the field strength is increased, and reversely how two atoms
in the continuum can be brought into a bound state by lowering the electric
