The SRB heat shield: Aeroelastic stability during reentry
Wind tunnel tests of a 3% scale model of the aft portion of the SRB equipped with partially scaled heat shields were conducted for the purpose of measuring fluctuating pressure levels in the aft skirt region. During these tests, the heat shields were observed to oscillate violently, the oscillations in some instances causing the heat shields to fail. High speed films taken during the tests reveal a regular pattern of waves in the fabric starting near the flow stagnation point and progressing around both sides of the annulus. The amplitude of the waves was too great, and their pattern too regular, for them to be attributed to the fluctuating pressure levels measured during the tests. The cause of the oscillations observed in the model heat shields, and whether or not similar oscillations will occur in the full scale SRB heat shield during reentry were investigated. Suggestions for modifying the heat shield so as to avoid the oscillations are provided, and recommendations are made for a program of vibration and wind tunnel tests of reduced-scale aeroelastic models of the heat shield
The Herschel Lensing Survey (HLS): Overview
The Herschel Lensing Survey (HLS) will conduct deep PACS and SPIRE imaging of ∼40 massive clusters of galaxies. The strong gravitational lensing power of these clusters will enable us to penetrate through the confusion noise, which sets the ultimate limit on our ability to probe the
Universe with Herschel. Here we present an overview of our survey and a summary of the major results from our science demonstration phase (SDP) observations of the Bullet cluster (z = 0.297). The SDP data are rich and allow us to study not only the background high-redshift galaxies
(e.g., strongly lensed and distorted galaxies at z = 2.8 and 3.2) but also the properties of cluster-member galaxies. Our preliminary analysis shows a great diversity of far-infrared/submillimeter spectral energy distributions (SEDs), indicating that we have much to learn with Herschel about the properties of galaxy SEDs. We have also detected the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (SZ) effect increment with the SPIRE data. The success of this SDP program demonstrates the great potential of the Herschel Lensing Survey to produce exciting results in a variety of science areas
Submillimeter Imaging of NGC 891 with SHARC
The advent of submillimeter wavelength array cameras operating on large
ground-based telescopes is revolutionizing imaging at these wavelengths,
enabling high-resolution submillimeter surveys of dust emission in star-forming
regions and galaxies. Here we present a recent 350 micron image of the edge-on
galaxy NGC 891, which was obtained with the Submillimeter High Angular
Resolution Camera (SHARC) at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO). We
find that high resolution submillimeter data is a vital complement to shorter
wavelength satellite data, which enables a reliable separation of the cold dust
component seen at millimeter wavelengths from the warmer component which
dominates the far-infrared (FIR) luminosity.Comment: 4 pages LaTeX, 2 EPS figures, with PASPconf.sty; to appear in

Free vibrations of a plate with varying number of supports
This experimental investigation tested the accuracy of an analysis which predicts the natural frequencies of vibration of a plate constrained by an arbitrary number of point supports along the edges, and also determined the number of such supports which approximates an infinite number
Beyond the Brim of the Hat: Kinematics of Globular Clusters out to Large Radius in the Sombrero Galaxy
We have obtained radial velocity measurements for 51 new globular clusters
around the Sombrero galaxy. These measurements were obtained using
spectroscopic observations from the AAOmega spectrograph on the
Anglo-Australian Telescope and the Hydra spectrograph at WIYN. Combined with
our own past measurements and velocity measurements obtained from the
literature we have constructed a large database of radial velocities that
contains a total of 360 confirmed globular clusters. Previous studies' analyses
of the kinematics and mass profile of the Sombrero globular cluster system have
been constrained to the inner ~9' (~24 kpc or ~5 effective radii), but our new
measurements have increased the radial coverage of the data, allowing us to
determine the kinematic properties of M104 out to ~15' (~41 kpc or ~9 effective
radii). We use our set of radial velocities to study the GC system kinematics
and to determine the mass profile and V-band mass-to-light profile of the
galaxy. We find that the V-band mass-to-light ratio increases from 4.5 at the
center to a value of 20.9 at 41 kpc (~9 effective radii or 15'), which implies
that the dark matter halo extends to the edge of our available data set. We
compare our mass profile at 20 kpc (~4 effective radii or ~7.4') to the mass
computed from x-ray data and find good agreement. We also use our data to look
for rotation in the globular cluster system as a whole, as well as in the red
and blue subpopulations. We find no evidence for significant rotation in any of
these samples.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal; 23 pages, 14
