Discrimination of Individual Tigers (\u3cem\u3ePanthera tigris\u3c/em\u3e) from Long Distance Roars
This paper investigates the extent of tiger (Panthera tigris) vocal individuality through both qualitative and quantitative approaches using long distance roars from six individual tigers at Omaha\u27s Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, NE. The framework for comparison across individuals includes statistical and discriminant function analysis across whole vocalization measures and statistical pattern classification using a hidden Markov model (HMM) with frame-based spectral features comprised of Greenwood frequency cepstral coefficients. Individual discrimination accuracy is evaluated as a function of spectral model complexity, represented by the number of mixtures in the underlying Gaussian mixture model (GMM), and temporal model complexity, represented by the number of sequential states in the HMM. Results indicate that the temporal pattern of the vocalization is the most significant factor in accurate discrimination. Overall baseline discrimination accuracy for this data set is about 70% using high level features without complex spectral or temporal models. Accuracy increases to about 80% when more complex spectral models (multiple mixture GMMs) are incorporated, and increases to a final accuracy of 90% when more detailed temporal models (10-state HMMs) are used. Classification accuracy is stable across a relatively wide range of configurations in terms of spectral and temporal model resolution
Gas sensing based on optical fibre coupled diode laser spectroscopy : a new approach to sensor systems for safety monitoring
We describe an entirely passive fibre optic network which senses, amongst other species, CH¬4¬ and CO¬¬2 , with sensitivity and selectivity compatible with safety sensing in the mine environment. The basic principle is that a single laser diode source targeted to a particular species addresses up to 200 sensing points which may be spread over an area of dimensions ten or more km. The detection and processing electronics is typically located with the laser source. Several laser sources can be introduced in parallel to enable monitoring multiple species. The network itself, entirely linked through optical fibre, is inherently intrinsically safe. It is self checking for faults at the sensing location and continuously self calibrating. In the methane sensing mode its sensitivity is sub 100ppm and it responds accurately up to 100% methane. It is therefore capable of detecting extremely hazardous gas pockets which are completely missed by other sensor technologies. The network has demonstrated stability with zero maintenance or recalibration over periods in excess of two years. We believe that this system offers unique benefits in the context of mine safety and ventilation system monitoring
Linking discrete event simulation models using HLA
The increasing usage of discrete event simulation packages for modeling and analyzing manufacturing and logistics has led to a need for connecting simulation models together at runtime. One such methodology for linking discrete event simulation models together has been developed for this research and this paper demonstrates the usage of this linking method. A unified simulation model is developed from two submodels developed using different simulation packages. <br /
The Black Hole in the Compact, High-dispersion Galaxy NGC 1271
Located in the Perseus cluster, NGC 1271 is an early-type galaxy with a small
effective radius of 2.2 kpc and a large stellar velocity dispersion of 276 km/s
for its K-band luminosity of 8.9x10^{10} L_sun. We present a mass measurement
for the black hole in this compact, high-dispersion galaxy using observations
from the integral field spectrograph NIFS on the Gemini North telescope
assisted by laser guide star adaptive optics, large-scale integral field unit
observations with PPAK at the Calar Alto Observatory, and Hubble Space
Telescope WFC3 imaging observations. We are able to map out the stellar
kinematics on small spatial scales, within the black hole sphere of influence,
and on large scales that extend out to four times the galaxy's effective
radius. We find that the galaxy is rapidly rotating and exhibits a sharp rise
in the velocity dispersion. Through the use of orbit-based stellar dynamical
models, we determine that the black hole has a mass of (3.0^{+1.0}_{-1.1}) x
10^9 M_sun and the H-band stellar mass-to-light ratio is 1.40^{+0.13}_{-0.11}
M_sun/L_sun (1-sigma uncertainties). NGC 1271 occupies the sparsely-populated
upper end of the black hole mass distribution, but is very different from the
Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) and giant elliptical galaxies that are
expected to host the most massive black holes. Interestingly, the black hole
mass is an order of magnitude larger than expectations based on the galaxy's
bulge luminosity, but is consistent with the mass predicted using the galaxy's
bulge stellar velocity dispersion. More compact, high-dispersion galaxies need
to be studied using high spatial resolution observations to securely determine
black hole masses, as there could be systematic differences in the black hole
scaling relations between these types of galaxies and the BCGs/giant
ellipticals, thereby implying different pathways for black hole and galaxy
growth.Comment: accepted for publication in Ap
Sensitivity of predicted bioaerosol exposure from open windrow composting facilities to ADMS dispersion model parameters
Bioaerosols are released in elevated quantities from composting facilities and are associated with negative health effects, although dose-response relationships are not well understood, and require improved exposure classification. Dispersion modelling has great potential to improve exposure classification, but has not yet been extensively used or validated in this context. We present a sensitivity analysis of the ADMS dispersion model specific to input parameter ranges relevant to bioaerosol emissions from open windrow composting. This analysis provides an aid for model calibration by prioritising parameter adjustment and targeting independent parameter estimation. Results showed that predicted exposure was most sensitive to the wet and dry deposition modules and the majority of parameters relating to emission source characteristics, including pollutant emission velocity, source geometry and source height. This research improves understanding of the accuracy of model input data required to provide more reliable exposure predictions
Adolescent family violence: what is the role for legal responses?
Domestic and family violence has received close attention in Australia recently. However, most of the legal, policy and research interest has focused on the protection of women and their children from violent male partners. Adolescent family violence has remained largely underexplored. In this article, we consider the role of the legal system in responding to adolescent family violence. Drawing on focus groups conducted with lawyers and other service providers, we examine the role of legal interventions in improving outcomes for victims, perpetrators and other family members. We identify the need for greater resourcing and a more nuanced response to this form of violence
