    Swine flu awareness in pregnancy

    Background: Swine influenza outbreaks are common in pigs year-round and infection in humans is a result of close contact with infected animals. Understanding the perception of the public and their potential resources would help public health agencies in developing educational programs to increase the awareness of the public. The objective of this study was to assess the knowledge, attitude and practices on different aspects of swine flu.Methods: A cross-sectional study of 100 pregnant women was conducted at Varun Arjun Medical College, Banthara, Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India to test their knowledge, attitudes, and use of precautionary measures against influenza infection.Results: In this study, 98 (98%) of pregnant women were aware of swine flu infection, 85 (85%) of pregnant women knew that swine flu is due to viral infection while 65 (65%) of pregnant women were aware that swine flu infection spreads through air while sneezing and coughing. In this study, 95 (96%) of pregnant women knew fever as symptom of swine flu, 83 (83%) of pregnant women knew cough and cold as symptoms while 64 (64%) of pregnant women knew headache and body ache as symptoms. 94 (94%) of pregnant women were aware that vaccination against swine flu can prevent swine flu infection. 80 (80%) of pregnant women knew that covering mouth and nose while coughing and sneezing can prevent spread of swine flu infection while 52 (52%) of pregnant women knew that frequent hand washing helps in preventing spread of swine flu infection. 76 (76%) of pregnant women received vaccination against swine flu while 24 (24%) of pregnant women did not receive vaccination against swine flu.Conclusions: Learning more about the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of the public during swine flu and other infectious disease outbreak can be crucial to improve efforts by public health officials and clinicians

    Adverse effects of spinal anaesthesia for caesarean section

    Background: Obstetric anaesthetists while providing anaesthesia for caesarean sections, provide care for both the mother and the unborn baby. This study was performed to evaluate the adverse effects of spinal anaesthesia for Caesarean section.   Methods: The present study is a prospective observational study carried out on 100 full-term, low risk pregnant patients who had caesarean section under spinal anaesthesia at Varun Arjun medical college, Shahjahanpur, U. P., India from January 2022 to December 2022. Results: In our study, 43 (43%) patients were between 26-30 years, 32 (32%) patients were between 31-35 years, 16 (16%) patients were between 36-40 years. The 62 (62%) patients were primigravida while 38 (38%) patients were multigravida. The 66 (66%) patients were delivered by emergency caesarean section while 34 (34%) were delivered by emergency caesarean section. In our study, adverse anaesthetic effects were less. 12 (12%) patients had spinal hypotension, 11 (11%) patients had spinal headache, 10 (10%) patients had pruritus, 9 (9%) patients had shivering, 5 (5%) patients had nausea and vomiting, 4 (4%) patients had less visceral pain and neonatal Apgar score each, 3 (3%) patients had failed regional anaesthesia, 3 (3%) patients had bradycardia while 2 (2%) patients had high spinal anaesthesia, 10 (10%) patients had visceral pain. Conclusions: In our study, combination of bupivacaine and a low dose of fentanyl (0.25 μg/kg) provided excellent surgical anaesthesia with short-lasting postoperative analgesia.     Oculodentodigital dysplasia

    Oculodentodigital dysplasia is a rare, autosomal dominant disorder with high penetrance and variable expressivity, caused by mutations in the connexin 43 or gap junction protein alpha-1 gene. It has been diagnosed in fewer than 300 people worldwide with an incidence of around 1 in 10 million. It affects many parts of the body, particularly eyes (oculo), teeth (dento), and fingers and/or toes (digital). The common clinical features include facial dysmorphism with thin nose, microphthalmia, syndactyly, tooth anomalies such as enamel hypoplasia, anodontia, microdontia, early tooth loss and conductive deafness. Other less common features are abnormalities of the skin and its appendages, such as brittle nails, sparse hair, and neurological abnormalities. To prevent this syndrome from being overlooked, awareness of possible symptoms is necessary. Early recognition can prevent blindness, dental problems and learning disabilities. Described here is the case of a 21-year-old male who presented to the ophthalmology outpatient department with a complaint of bilateral progressive loss of vision since childhood

    Evaluation of flexural strength and color stability of different denture base materials including flexible material after using different denture cleansers

    Aims: Present study aimed at evaluating the colour stability and flexural strength of flexible denture base materials (Valplast) and Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) denture base material (Meliodent) processed by two different methods (Injection moulding and compression moulding) after immersing them in three different denture cleansers with acidic, basic and neutral PH. Methods and Materials: Total 120 specimens (65 × 10 × 3 mm3), 40 specimens of each material (Valplast, Meliodent compression moulding and injection moulding) were immersed in denture cleansers having different PH; Valclean (Acidic), Clinsodent (Basic) and Polident (Neutral) as well as Distilled Water. Color changes were measured with a spectrophotometer after 1 month, 3 months and 6 months of immersion cycle. A flexural 3-point bending test was carried out by using an Instron universal testing machine after 6 months of soaking.Data were analyzed using SPSS software Results: Maximum effect on colour stability was noted with Clinsodent followed by Valclean. Least color changes were observed after immersion in Polident. Colour difference was increased significantly as the immersion time increased. For both Meliodent and Nylon resins, statistically significant change in flexural strength occurred with immersion in all denture cleansers. Clinsodent has greater effect as compared to Valclean and Polident. Conclusions: Polident and Valclean can be safely used as denture cleanser for both nylon and acrylic resin denture base materials as far as colour stability and flexural strength both are concerned

    Cancer cells have a unique metabolic profile and mitochondria have been shown to play an important role in chemoresistance, tumor progression and metastases. This unique profile can be exploited by mitochondrial-targeted anticancer therapies. A small anticancer molecule, AG311, was previously shown to possess anticancer and antimetastatic activity in two cancer mouse models and to induce mitochondrial depolarization. This study defines the molecular effects of AG311 on the mitochondria to elucidate its observed efficacy. AG311 was found to competitively inhibit complex I activity at the ubiquinone-binding site. Complex I as a target for AG311 was further established by measuring oxygen consumption rate in tumor tissue isolated from AG311-treated mice. Cotreatment of cells and animals with AG311 and dichloroacetate, a pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase inhibitor that increases oxidative metabolism, resulted in synergistic cell kill and reduced tumor growth. The inhibition of mitochondrial oxygen consumption by AG311 was found to reduce HIF-1α stabilization by increasing oxygen tension in hypoxic conditions. Taken together, these results suggest that AG311 at least partially mediates its antitumor effect through inhibition of complex I, which could be exploited in its use as an anticancer agent

    Cardiac troponin I predicts myocardial dysfunction in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage

    AbstractOBJECTIVESWe studied the incidence of myocardial injury in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) using the more sensitive cardiac troponin I (cTnI) assay, correlated changes in cTnI with creatine kinase, MB fraction (CK-MB), myoglobin, and catecholamine metabolite assays, and examined the predictive value of changes in cTnI for myocardial dysfunction.BACKGROUNDMyocardial injury in aneurysmal SAH as evidenced by elevated CK-MB fraction has been reported. Little published data exist on the value of cTnI measurements in aneurysmal SAH.METHODSThirty-nine patients were studied for seven days. Clinical cardiovascular assessment, electrocardiographic (ECG), echocardiography, cTnI, CK, CK-MB and CK-MB index, myoglobin and 24-h urinary catecholamine assays were performed in all patients. The ECG abnormalities were defined by the presence of ST-T changes, prolonged QT intervals, and arrhythmias. An abnormal echocardiogram was defined by the presence of wall-motion abnormalities and a reduced ejection fraction. The severity of SAH was graded clinically and radiologically.RESULTSEight patients demonstrated elevations in cTnI (upper limit of normal is 0.1 μg/liter with the immunoenzymatic assay and 0.4 μg/liter with the sandwich immunoassay), while five had abnormal CK-MB levels (upper limit of normal is 8 μg/liter). Patients with more severe grades of SAH were more likely to develop a cTnI leak (p < 0.05). Patients with cTnI elevations were more likely to demonstrate ECG abnormalities (p < 0.01) and manifest clinical myocardial dysfunction (p < 0.01) as evidenced by the presence of a gallop rhythm on auscultation and clinical or radiological evidence of pulmonary edema as compared to those with CK-MB elevations. The sensitivity and specificity of cTnI to predict myocardial dysfunction were 100% and 91%, respectively, whereas the corresponding figures for CK-MB were 60% and 94%, respectively. Elevations in myoglobin levels (upper limit of normal <70 μg/liter) and urinary catecholamine metabolites (urinary vanilmandelate/creatinine ratio upper limit of normal, 2.6) are a nonspecific finding.CONCLUSIONSMeasurements of cTnI reveal a higher incidence of myocardial injury than predicted by CK-MB in aneurysmal SAH, and elevations of cTnI are associated with a higher incidence of myocardial dysfunction. Thus, cTnI is a highly sensitive and specific indicator of myocardial dysfunction in aneurysmal SAH

    SAtellite-based Marine Process Understanding, Development, Research and Applications (SAMUDRA) for blue economy, a technology development program of the Space Applications Centre, is an umbrella program covering research and applications geared toward physical and biological oceanography making use of current and future satellite observations for developing the nation’s blue economy. The main motivation behind this project was to develop satellite and numerical model-based information and value-added products and to demonstrate the implementation of developed applications for operational requirements. The program also aimed at improving existing methodologies for various applications by utilizing space-based inputs. Several field campaigns with the use of NavIC-enabled instruments and NABHMITRA were conducted for measuring biophysical parameters and validation of developed applications in the coastal regions. One of the key aspects of this project was development of web-based customized tools/dissemination system for providing the information to the end users. Some of the key/notable achievements of SAMUDRA were development of a portal OceanEye (tailor-made web-portal for Shipping Corporation of India), storm-surge/inundation system, oil-spill trajectory modeling, level-next potential fishing zone algorithm and rip current alert system
