Electron impact double ionization of helium from classical trajectory calculations
With a recently proposed quasiclassical ansatz [Geyer and Rost, J. Phys. B 35
(2002) 1479] it is possible to perform classical trajectory ionization
calculations on many electron targets. The autoionization of the target is
prevented by a M\o{}ller type backward--forward propagation scheme and allows
to consider all interactions between all particles without additional
stabilization. The application of the quasiclassical ansatz for helium targets
is explained and total and partially differential cross sections for electron
impact double ionization are calculated. In the high energy regime the
classical description fails to describe the dominant TS1 process, which leads
to big deviations, whereas for low energies the total cross section is
reproduced well. Differential cross sections calculated at 250 eV await their

Liouville Perturbation Theory
A comparison is made between proposals for the exact three point function in
Liouville quantum field theory and the nonperturbative weak coupling expansion
developed long ago by Braaten, Curtright, Ghandour, and Thorn. Exact agreement
to the order calculated (i.e. up to and including corrections of order

A lecture on the Liouville vertex operators
We reconsider the construction of exponential fields in the quantized
Liouville theory. It is based on a free-field construction of a continuous
family or chiral vertex operators. We derive the fusion and braid relations of
the chiral vertex operators. This allows us to simplify the verification of
locality and crossing symmetry of the exponential fields considerably. The
calculation of the matrix elements of the exponential fields leads to a
constructive derivation of the formula proposed by Dorn/Otto and the brothers

The group structure of non-Abelian NS-NS transformations
We study the transformations of the worldvolume fields of a system of
multiple coinciding D-branes under gauge transformations of the supergravity
Kalb-Ramond field. We find that the pure gauge part of these NS-NS
transformations can be written as a U(N) symmetry of the underlying Yang-Mills
group, but that in general the full NS-NS variations get mixed up non-trivially
with the U(N). We compute the commutation relations and the Jacobi identities

M Theory from World-Sheet Defects in Liouville String
We have argued previously that black holes may be represented in a D-brane
approach by monopole and vortex defects in a sine-Gordon field theory model of
Liouville dynamics on the world sheet. Supersymmetrizing this sine-Gordon
system, we find critical behaviour in 11 dimensions, due to defect condensation
that is the world-sheet analogue of D-brane condensation around an extra
space-time dimension in M theory. This supersymmetric description of Liouville
dynamics has a natural embedding within a 12-dimensional framework suggestive

Development of LC-13C NMR
This study involves the development of C-13 nuclear resonance as an on-line detector for liquid chromatography (LC-C-13 NMR) for the chemical characterization of aviation fuels. The initial focus of this study was the development of a high sensitivity flow C-13 NMR probe. Since C-13 NMR sensitivity is of paramount concern, considerable effort during the first year was directed at new NMR probe designs. In particular, various toroid coil designs were examined. In addition, corresponding shim coils for correcting the main magnetic field (B sub 0) homogeneity were examined. Based on these initial probe design studies, an LC-C-13 NMR probe was built and flow C-13 NMR data was obtained for a limited number of samples
Quantum-Gravitational Diffusion and Stochastic Fluctuations in the Velocity of Light
We argue that quantum-gravitational fluctuations in the space-time background
give the vacuum non-trivial optical properties that include diffusion and
consequent uncertainties in the arrival times of photons, causing stochastic
fluctuations in the velocity of light ``in vacuo''. Our proposal is motivated
within a Liouville string formulation of quantum gravity that also suggests a
frequency-dependent refractive index of the particle vacuum. We construct an
explicit realization by treating photon propagation through quantum excitations
of -brane fluctuations in the space-time foam. These are described by
higher-genus string effects, that lead to stochastic fluctuations in couplings,
and hence in the velocity of light. We discuss the possibilities of
constraining or measuring photon diffusion ``in vacuo'' via -ray

Irregular singularities in Liouville theory
Motivated by problems arising in the study of N=2 supersymmetric gauge
theories we introduce and study irregular singularities in two-dimensional
conformal field theory, here Liouville theory. Irregular singularities are
associated to representations of the Virasoro algebra in which a subset of the
annihilation part of the algebra act diagonally. In this paper we define
natural bases for the space of conformal blocks in the presence of irregular
singularities, describe how to calculate their series expansions, and how such
conformal blocks can be constructed by some delicate limiting procedure from
ordinary conformal blocks. This leads us to a proposal for the structure
functions appearing in the decomposition of physical correlation functions with
irregular singularities into conformal blocks. Taken together, we get a precise
prediction for the partition functions of some Argyres-Douglas type theories on
