The Affect That Injuries Can Have on Collegiate Athletes Mental Health

    Get PDF
This presentation provides research that answers the question of whether injuries affect collegiate athletes mentally. College athletes have a lot of mental challenges that they deal with behind the scenes. If an injury were to occur, the amount of stress and anxiety that the athlete feels would significantly increase. This research aims to determine if universities and colleges are providing the proper mental health resources to their student-athletes who have been affected by an injury. This research was conducted by reviewing both primary and secondary sources that provided first-hand accounts from collegiate athletes who struggled with their mental health after receiving a major injury. From this research, I can conclude that the student-athletes that are having mental health challenges after an injury often have no one that they can open up to about what they are dealing with. The emotions and feelings are bottled up which ultimately drives these athletes away from their sport. The results of my research have indicated that in the world of college athletics, the majority of these athletes who undergo an injury, often feel the mental strain of being injured. This strain takes a toll on their mental health, which can affect them heavily, which could affect them in long term

Title: Social networking in the (Law) Library: can you do that? Abstract: One can define “social networking” as an opportunity to build relationships with users via the Internet. When online, people want to connect with others, those who may listen, comment and interact because of similar interests. Sites such as: Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn offer users the opportunity to create profiles and share personal and/or professional information. Other websites like Delicious and Friend Feed provide central places to tag and store relevant information. The best part is that these sites are free! The newest tech trend is mobile Internet – being able to access the Internet and social networks by mobile phone. Since users can access the library via phone, this means libraries need mobile apps or websites. This presentation will include an overview of social networks, how people use social networking and how libraries can connect with users via social networks. The Schmid Law Library is activity using Twitter, Facebook and an online radio show (The Law Librarian on Blog Talk Radio) to interact with our audience of users via social networks. The University of Nebraska Libraries is testing a mobile version of our library catalog slated to go live with the Spring 2010 semester. The influence of established women in IT — specifically Florence Hudson and Melissa Woo — encouraged a librarian to apply for a position in Information Technology Services at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. A hands-on approach to planning the IT Leadership conference developed a strong collaborative network that also helped grow attendance. Paying attention to the pros and cons of the 2016 conference guided the planners in modifying their approach to the upcoming October 2017 conference and its focus on diversity and inclusion. A main goal for future IT Leadership conferences focusing on women and diversity in IT is providing attendees with practical ways to change their campuses

Indigenous societies around the world are stepping forward to assert their place as an equal partner in their nation’s future. In many cases, these efforts have been undertaken in response to the development and the 2007 publication of the Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, as endorsed by the United Nations Working Group on Indigenous Populations. Governments also have begun to reconsider their stance on the associated issues. The digital texts of 189 international constitutions – as offered by the Constitute Web site – were examined for occurrences of the four tokens indigenous, aboriginal, and Indian or Indians to yield country indices. Documents from forty countries were found to contain the term indigenous and seven possessed aboriginal (N uses = 320 and 19, respectively). The more familiar token Indian, or its plural, occurred 88 times in ten of these political affirmations

    Nebraska Libraries Using Social Software

    Get PDF
A conversation with a library colleague on using LibGuides sparked the idea to survey Nebraska Library Association (NLA) members to check the pulse on Nebraska libraries using social software. According to the Mashable website, “Social Software” is defined as the interactive tools used to communicate. My curiosity piqued, I emailed a brief (six questions) survey in March 2013, Nebraska Libraries Using Social Software, to the NLA membership. The survey asked: (1) What type of library do you work in? (2) Is your library using social software? (3) Does your library have a website? (4) What social software is your library using? (5) For what reasons does your library use social software? (6) How long has your library used social media? The intent was to determine the types of social software used by Nebraska libraries and how long Nebraska libraries have participated in social software platforms
