Vibrational spectrum of solid picene (C_22H_14)
Recently, Mitsuhashi et al., have observed superconductivity with transition
temperature up to 18 K in potassium doped picene (C22H14), a polycyclic
aromatic hydrocarbon compound [Nature 464 (2010) 76]. Theoretical analysis
indicate the importance of electron-phonon coupling in the superconducting
mechanisms of these systems, with different emphasis on inter- and
intra-molecular vibrations, depending on the approximations used. Here we
present a combined experimental and ab-initio study of the Raman and infrared
spectrum of undoped solid picene, which allows us to unanbiguously assign the
vibrational modes. This combined study enables the identification of the modes
which couple strongly to electrons and hence can play an important role in the
superconducting properties of the doped samples
Infrared absorption from Charge Density Waves in magnetic manganites
The infrared absorption of charge density waves coupled to a magnetic
background is first observed in two manganites La{1-x}Ca{x}MnO{3} with x = 0.5
and x = 0.67. In both cases a BCS-like gap 2 Delta (T), which for x=0.5 follows
the hysteretic ferro-antiferromagnetic transition, fully opens at a finite T{0}
< T{Neel}, with 2 Delta(T{0})/kT{c} close to 5. These results may also explain
the unusual coexistence of charge ordering and ferromagnetism in
La{0.5}Ca{0.5}MnO{3}.Comment: File revtex + 3 figs. in epsf. To appear on Phys. Rev. Let
Interplay of the electronic and lattice degrees of freedom in A_{1-x}Fe_{2-y}Se_{2} superconductors under pressure
The local structure and electronic properties of RbFeSe
are investigated by means of site selective polarized x-ray absorption
spectroscopy at the iron and selenium K-edges as a function of pressure. A
combination of dispersive geometry and novel nanodiamond anvil pressure-cell
has permitted to reveal a step-like decrease in the Fe-Se bond distance at
GPa. The position of the Fe K-edge pre-peak, which is directly
related to the position of the chemical potential, remains nearly constant
until GPa, followed by an increase until GPa. Here, as in
the local structure, a step-like decrease of the chemical potential is seen.
Thus, the present results provide compelling evidence that the origin of the
reemerging superconductivity in FeSe in vicinity of a
quantum critical transition is caused mainly by the changes in the electronic
structure
Factors associated with severity of hepatic fibrosis in people with chronic hepatitis C infection
The document attached has been archived with permission from the editor of the Medical Journal of Australia. An external link to the publisher’s copy is included.OBJECTIVE: To determine factors associated with hepatic fibrosis development in people with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. METHODS: As a requirement for access to interferon therapy through the S100 scheme in Australia, individual pretreatment demographic and clinical information was collected on 2986 patients from 61 hospital-based liver clinics from 1 October 1994 through 31 December 1996. Patients with both a hepatic fibrosis score and an estimated duration of HCV infection (910) were divided into 540 with no or minimal hepatic fibrosis (stage 0–1) and 370 with moderate to severe hepatic fibrosis (stage 2–3). Seven factors were examined: age at HCV infection, sex, ethnicity, source of infection, duration of infection, alcohol intake, and mean ALT level. A further analysis was performed for all 1135 patients with a hepatic fibrosis score disregarding age at and duration of HCV infection. RESULTS: In multivariate analysis, four factors were significantly associated with moderate to severe hepatic fibrosis: age at infection (OR, 2.33 for age 31–40 years, 5.27 for age > 40 years, and 0.20 for age 30 years, compared with 3 times, compared with 1.5–2 times the upper limit of normal). In the analysis disregarding age at HCV infection and duration of HCV infection, older age was strongly associated with moderate to severe hepatic fibrosis (OR, 2.32 for age 36–40 years, 2.46 for age 41–50 years, 7.87 for age 51–60 years, and 7.15 for age > 60 years, compared with 16–30 years). There was no association in either analysis with sex or source of HCV infection. CONCLUSION: These factors may assist in targeting patients for both liver biopsy-based investigation and therapeutic intervention.Mark Danta, Gregory J Dore, Lisa Hennessy, Yueming Li, Chris R Vickers, Hugh Harley, Meng Ngu, William Reed, Paul V Desmond, William Sievert, Geoff C Farrell, John M Kaldor and Robert G Bate
Infrared response of ordered polarons in layered perovskites
We report on the infrared absorption spectra of three oxides where charged
superlattices have been recently observed in diffraction experiments. In
LaSrNiO, polaron localization is found to suppress the
low-energy conductivity through the opening of a gap and to split the
- vibrational manifold of the oxygen octahedra. Similar effects
are detected in SrLaMnO and in LaNiO, with
peculiar differences related to the type of charge ordering.Comment: File latex, 11 p. + 3 Figures, to appear on Phys. Rev. B (Rapid

Prospect for Charge Current Neutrino Interactions Measurements at the CERN-PS
Tensions in several phenomenological models grew with experimental results on
neutrino/antineutrino oscillations at Short-Baseline (SBL) and with the recent,
carefully recomputed, antineutrino fluxes from nuclear reactors. At a
refurbished SBL CERN-PS facility an experiment aimed to address the open issues
has been proposed [1], based on the technology of imaging in ultra-pure
cryogenic Liquid Argon (LAr). Motivated by this scenario a detailed study of
the physics case was performed. We tackled specific physics models and we
optimized the neutrino beam through a full simulation. Experimental aspects not
fully covered by the LAr detection, i.e. the measurements of the lepton charge
on event-by-event basis and their energy over a wide range, were also
investigated. Indeed the muon leptons from Charged Current (CC) (anti-)neutrino
interactions play an important role in disentangling different phenomenological
scenarios provided their charge state is determined. Also, the study of muon
appearance/disappearance can benefit of the large statistics of CC muon events
from the primary neutrino beam. Results of our study are reported in detail in
this proposal. We aim to design, construct and install two Spectrometers at
"NEAR" and "FAR" sites of the SBL CERN-PS, compatible with the already proposed
LAr detectors. Profiting of the large mass of the two Spectrometers their
stand-alone performances have also been exploited.Comment: 70 pages, 38 figures. Proposal submitted to SPS-C, CER

Supercooled confined water and the Mode Coupling crossover temperature
We present a Molecular Dynamics study of the single particle dynamics of
supercooled water confined in a silica pore. Two dynamical regimes are found:
close to the hydrophilic substrate molecules are below the Mode Coupling
crossover temperature, , already at ambient temperature. The water closer
to the center of the pore (free water) approaches upon supercooling as
predicted by Mode Coupling Theories. For free water the crossover temperature
and crossover exponent are extracted from power-law fits to both the
diffusion coefficient and the relaxation time of the late region.Comment: To be published, Phys. Rev. Lett., 4 pages, 3 figures, revTeX, minor

Pressure and alloying effects on the metal to insulator transition in NiS{2-x}Se{x} studied by infrared spectroscopy
The metal to insulator transition in the charge transfer NiS{2-x}Se{x}
compound has been investigated through infrared reflectivity. Measurements
performed by applying pressure to pure NiS2 (lattice contraction) and by
Se-alloying (lattice expansion) reveal that in both cases an anomalous metallic
state is obtained. We find that optical results are not compatible with the
linear Se-alloying vs Pressure scaling relation previously established through
transport, thus pointing out the substantially different microscopic origin of
the two transitions.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
