Group F Streptococcal Bacteremia Complicating a Bartholin's Abscess
Background: Group F streptococci are Gram-positive cocci typically isolated from wound infections and abscesses. Bacteremia with group F streptococcus is uncommon, and the lower gynecologic tract has not been reported as a source. We report a case of a Bartholin's abscess leading to group F streptococcal bacteremia. Case: A 31-year-old female noted fever and rigors 30 min after manipulation of a 3-day-old vulvar abscess. An empty Bartholin's gland abscess was found on examination, and blood cultures grew β-hemolytic group F streptococci. The patient was treated with ampicillin/sulbactam, symptoms improved, and follow-up blood cultures revealed no growth. Conclusion: Group F streptococci are known to inhabit various body sites and have a predilection for forming abscesses; however, bacteremia is infrequent. They have occasionally been identified in true infections of the genitourinary tract but only very rarely in Bartholin's abscesses. This case of group F streptococcal bacteremia following self-drainage of a Bartholin's abscess constitutes the first such description in the medical literature

Search for Flavoured Multiquarks in a Simple Bag Model
We use a bag model to study flavoured mesonic and baryonic
states, where one heavy quark is associated with
light quarks or antiquarks, and search for possible stable multiquarks. No
bound state is found. However some states lie not too high above their
dissociation threshold, suggesting the possibility of resonances, or perhaps

Cost-benefit analysis for commissioning decisions in GEO600
Gravitational wave interferometers are complex instruments, requiring years
of commissioning to achieve the required sensitivities for the detection of
gravitational waves, of order 10^-21 in dimensionless detector strain, in the
tens of Hz to several kHz frequency band. Investigations carried out by the
GEO600 detector characterisation group have shown that detector
characterisation techniques are useful when planning for commissioning work. At
the time of writing, GEO600 is the only large scale laser interferometer
currently in operation running with a high duty factor, 70%, limited chiefly by
the time spent commissioning the detector. The number of observable
gravitational wave sources scales as the product of the volume of space to
which the detector is sensitive and the observation time, so the goal of
commissioning is to improve the detector sensitivity with the least possible
detector down time. We demonstrate a method for increasing the number of
sources observable by such a detector, by assessing the severity of
non-astrophysical noise contaminations to efficiently guide commissioning. This
method will be particularly useful in the early stages and during the initial
science runs of the aLIGO and adVirgo detectors, as they are brought up to

I=3/2 Scattering in the Nonrelativisitic Quark Potential Model
We study elastic scattering to Born order using
nonrelativistic quark wavefunctions in a constituent-exchange model. This
channel is ideal for the study of nonresonant meson-meson scattering amplitudes
since s-channel resonances do not contribute significantly. Standard quark
model parameters yield good agreement with the measured S- and P-wave phase
shifts and with PCAC calculations of the scattering length. The P-wave phase
shift is especially interesting because it is nonzero solely due to
symmetry breaking effects, and is found to be in good agreement with experiment
given conventional values for the strange and nonstrange constituent quark

Comprehension as social and intellectual practice: Rebuilding curriculum in low socioeconomic and cultural minority schools
This article reframes the concept of comprehension as a social and intellectual practice. It reviews current approaches to reading instruction for linguistically and culturally diverse and low socioeconomic students, noting an emphasis on comprehension as autonomous skills. The Four Resources model (Freebody & Luke, 1990) is used to make the case for the integration of comprehension instruction with an emphasis on student cultural and community knowledge, and substantive intellectual and sociocultural content in elementary school curricula. Illustrations are drawn from research underway on the teaching of literacy in primary schools in low SES communities

Результатом исследования является оценка эффективности проведенных мероприятий по увеличения нефтеотдачи и выбор наиболее оптимального метода. Применение МУН позволяют значительно увеличить нефтеотдачу на разрабатываемых пластах, где стандартными способами получить максимальные остаточные запасы нефти не выполнимо. Когда обводненность скважин увеличивается, логичнее использовать больше методов технологий МУН для уменьшения обводненности добывающий скважин за счет использования слабодренируемых запасов.The calculation of hydraulic fracturing for one of the wells was carried out. The result of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the measures taken to increase oil recovery and choose the best method. Application of EOR allows to significantly increase oil recovery in the developed reservoirs, where it is not possible to obtain the maximum residual oil reserves by standard methods. When the watercut increases, it is more logical to use more EOR methods to reduce the watercut of producing wells by using low-drainage reserves
Envoplakin, a novel precursor of the cornified envelope that has homology to desmoplakin.
The cornified envelope is a layer of transglutaminase cross-linked protein that is deposited under the plasma membrane of keratinocytes in the outermost layers of the epidermis. We present the sequence of one of the cornified envelope precursors, a protein with an apparent molecular mass of 210 kD. The 210-kD protein is translated from a 6.5-kb mRNA that is transcribed from a single copy gene. The mRNA was upregulated during suspension-induced terminal differentiation of cultured human keratinocytes. Like other envelope precursors, the 210-kD protein became insoluble in SDS and beta-mercaptoethanol on activation of transglutaminases in cultured keratinocytes. The protein was expressed in keratinizing and nonkeratinizing stratified squamous epithelia, but not in simple epithelia or nonepithelial cells, Immunofluorescence staining showed that in epidermal keratinocytes, both in vivo and in culture, the protein was upregulated during terminal differentiation and partially colocalized with desmosomal proteins. Immunogold EM confirmed the colocalization of the 210-kD protein and desmoplakin at desmosomes and on keratin filaments throughout the differentiated layers of the epidermis, Sequence analysis showed that the 210-kD protein is homologous to the keratin-binding proteins desmoplakin, bullous pemphigoid antigen 1, and plectin. These data suggest that the 210-kD protein may link the cornified envelope to desmosomes and keratin filaments. We propose that the 210-kD protein be named ''envoplakin.'
Meson-Meson Scattering in the Quark Model: Spin Dependence and Exotic Channels
We apply a quark interchange model to spin-dependent and exotic meson-meson
scattering. The model includes the complete set of standard quark model forces,
including OGE spin-orbit and tensor and scalar confinement spin-orbit.
Scattering amplitudes derived assuming SHO and Coulomb plus linear plus
hyperfine meson wavefunctions are compared. In I=2 pi pi we find approximate
agreement with the S-wave phase shift from threshold to 1.5 GeV, where we
predict an extremum that is supported by the data. Near threshold we find rapid
energy dependence that may reconcile theoretical estimates of small scattering
lengths with experimental indications of larger ones based on extrapolation of
measurements at moderate kpi^2. In PsV scattering we find that the quark-quark
L*S and T forces map into L*S and T meson-meson interactions, and the P-wave
L*S force is large. Finally we consider scattering in J^PC-exotic channels, and
note that some of the Deck effect mechanisms suggested as possible nonresonant
origins of the pi_1(1400) signal are not viable in this model.Comment: 51 pages, 10 figures, uses epsf.sty epsfig.st
