    Correlation and Network Topologies in Global and Local Stock Indices

    This study examined how the correlation and network structure of 30 global indices and 145 local Korean indices belonging to the KOSPI 200 have changed during the 13-year period, 2000-2012. The correlations among the indices were calculated. The results showed that although the average correlations of the global indices increased with time, the local indices showed a decreasing trend except for drastic changes during crises. The average correlation of the local indices exceeded the global indices during the crises from 2000-2002, implying a strong correlation structure among the local indices during this period due to the detrimental effect of the dot-com bubble. The threshold networks (TN) were constructed in the observation time window by assigning a threshold value and determining the network topologies. A significant change in the network topologies was observed due to the financial crises in both markets. The Jaccard similarities were also determined using the common links of TNs. The TNs of the financial network were not consistent with the evolution of the time, and the successive TNs of the global indices were more similar than those of the successive local indices. Finally, the Jaccard similarities identified the change in the market state due to a crisis in both markets.Comment: 11 pages,4 figure

    AAD-2004, a potent spin trapping molecule and microsomal prostaglandin E synthase-1 inhibitor, shows safety and efficacy in a mouse model of ALS

    While free radicals and inflammation constitute major routes of neuronal injury occurring in neurodegenerative diseases, neither antioxidants nor nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have shown significant efficacy in human clinical trials. To explore the possibility that concurrent blockade of free radicals and PGE2-mediated inflammation might constitute a safe and effective therapeutic approach to certain neurodegenerative diseases, we have developed 2-hydroxy-5-[2-(4-trifluoromethylphenyl)-ethylaminobezoic acid (AAD-2004) as a derivative of aspirin. AAD-2004 completely removed free radicals at 50 nM as a potent spin trapping molecule and inhibited microsomal prostaglandin E synthase-1 (mPGES-1) with an IC50 of 230 nM. Oral administration of AAD-2004 blocked free radical formation, PGE2 formation, and microglial activation in the spinal motor neurons of SOD1G93A mice. As a consequence, AAD-2004 reduced autophagosome formation, axonopathy, and motor neuron degeneration, improving motor function and increasing life span. In these assays, AAD-2004 was superior to ibuprofen or riluzole. Gastric bleeding was not induced by AAD-2004 even at a dose 400-fold higher than that required to obtain maximal therapeutic efficacy in SOD1G93A mice. Targeting both mPGES-1 and free radicals may be a promising approach to reduce neurodegeneration in ALS and possibly other neurodegenerative diseases

    PKCε-mediated ERK1/2 activation involved in radiation-induced cell death in NIH3T3 cells

    AbstractProtein kinase C (PKC) isoforms play distinct roles in cellular functions. We have previously shown that ionizing radiation activates PKC isoforms (α, δ, ε, and ζ), however, isoform-specific sensitivities to radiation and its exact mechanisms in radiation mediated signal transduction are not fully understood. In this study, we showed that overexpression of PKC isoforms (α, δ, ε, and ζ) increased radiation-induced cell death in NIH3T3 cells and PKCε overexpression was predominantly responsible. In addition, PKCε overexpression increased ERK1/2 activation without altering other MAP-kinases such as p38 MAPK or JNK. Co-transfection of dominant negative PKCε (PKCε-KR) blocked both PKCε-mediated ERK1/2 activation and radiation-induced cell death, while catalytically active PKCε construction augmented these phenomena. When the PKCε overexpressed cells were pretreated with PD98059, MEK inhibitor, radiation-induced cell death was inhibited. Co-transfection of the cells with a mutant of ERK1 or -2 (ERK1-KR or ERK2-KR) also blocked these phenomena, and co-transfection with dominant negative Ras or Raf cDNA revealed that PKCε-mediated ERK1/2 activation was Ras–Raf-dependent.     Tip-Enhanced Raman Scattering Imaging of Two-Dimensional Tungsten Disulfide with Optimized Tip Fabrication Process

    We successfully achieve the tip-enhanced nano Raman scattering images of a tungsten disulfide monolayer with optimizing a fabrication method of gold nanotip by controlling the concentration of etchant in an electrochemical etching process. By applying a square-wave voltage supplied from an arbitrary waveform generator to a gold wire, which is immersed in a hydrochloric acid solution diluted with ethanol at various ratios, we find that both the conical angle and radius of curvature of the tip apex can be varied by changing the ratio of hydrochloric acid and ethanol. We also suggest a model to explain the origin of these variations in the tip shape. From the systematic study, we find an optimal condition for achieving the yield of similar to 60% with the radius of similar to 34 nm and the cone angle of similar to 35 degrees. Using representative tips fabricated under the optimal etching condition, we demonstrate the tip-enhanced Raman scattering experiment of tungsten disulfide monolayer grown by a chemical vapor deposition method with a spatial resolution of similar to 40 nm and a Raman enhancement factor of similar to 4,760. © The Author(s) 2017

    High-speed infrared phase modulators using short helical pitch ferroelectric liquid crystals

    A fast phase modulator based on ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) is demonstrated and its performances characterized. For uniform alignment and pure phase modulation, we propose a new FLC device configuration using short helical pitch material and homeotropic alignment structure. This device is driven by periodic in-plane electrode stripes implemented on the surface of both cell substrates. As a result, we have obtained large phase modulation ( \u3e 2 pi at lambda=1.55 mu m) and fast response ( \u3c 200 mu sec)

    A pilot scale dual fluidized bed gasification system was developed for polygeneration with biomass. The gasification system is designed for supplying syngas for Fischer Tropsch (F-T) synthesis of bio-diesel and power generation with a syngas engine. Characteristics of biomass steam gasification were investigated in a lab scale bubbling fluidized bed, and hydrodynamics of a dual fluidized bed were investigated in a cold flow model. Based on the results from the lab scale test and cold flow model, a pilot scale dual fluidized bed gasifier was designed. In this paper, the developing process of the gasifier and preliminary results of system operation will be presented

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Enterovirus (EV) infections are commonly associated with encephalitis and meningitis. Detection of enteroviral RNA in clinical specimens has been demonstrated to improve the management of patients, by ruling out other causes of disease.</p> <p>Method</p> <p>To develop a sensitive and reliable assay for routine laboratory diagnosis, we developed a real-time one step reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay with minor groove binder probes and primers modified with complementary locked primer technology (TMC-PCR). We checked the sensitivity of the developed assay by comparing it to a previously published TaqMan probe real-time one-step RT-PCR (TTN-PCR) procedure using enteroviral isolates, Enterovirus Proficiency panels from Quality Control on Molecular Diagnostics (QCMD-2007), and clinical specimens from patients with suspected EV infections.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>One hundred clinical specimens from 158 suspected viral meningitis cases were determined to be positive by the TMC-PCR assay (63.29%), whereas only 60 were found to be positive by the TTN-PCR assay (37.97%). The positive and negative agreements between the TMC-PCR and TTN-PCR assays were 100% and 59.2%, respectively.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This data suggest that the TMC-PCR assay may be suitable for routine diagnostic screening from patient suspected EV infection.</p

    AbstractThe nucleotide sequence of a 876 bp region in E. coli chromosome that encodes Ecotin was determined. The proposed coding sequence for Ecotin is 486 nucleotides long, which would encode a protein consisting of 162 amino acids with a calculated molecular weight of 18 192 Da. The deduced primary sequence of Ecotin includes a 20-residue signal sequence, cleavage of which would give rise to a mature protein with a molecular weight of 16 099 Da. Ecotin does not contain any consensus reactive site sequences of known serine protease inhibitor families, suggesting that Ecotin is a novel inhibitor

    A Case of Crohn's Disease with Improvement after Azathioprine-Induced Pancytopenia

    The immunosuppressant azathioprine (AZA) is widely used in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) for both inducing and maintaining remission. However, the adverse effects of AZA can often necessitate a dose reduction or discontinuation. Bone marrow suppression is one of the most serious complications with AZA treatment. On the other hand, some reports have suggested that neutropenia during AZA therapy reduced the relapse rates of IBD patients, and there have been some cases where eradication of the sensitized leukocytes by leukapheresis or bone marrow transplantation improved the IBD, which may explain the relevant role of neutropenia in controlling disease activity. This report describes the case of a 22-year-old male patient who had Crohn's colitis and complicated perianal fistulas that required immunosuppression; he achieved endoscopically determined remission and showed accelerated mucosal healing as well as clinical remission following the AZA-induced pancytopenia
