The Impacts of Social Interaction on Literacy Learning

    Get PDF
This thesis will show the importance of including social interaction in the classroom and how it can help students to develop their literacy skills. In my teaching, I intend to find a balance of direction instruction, practice and socially based interaction that best serves students. After doing this research I see that this balance will be heavily weighted by the interactive aspects. So much of what effective teachers do puts children in contact with peers or teachers. They must observe others practicing the skills of literacy if they are to learn these skills

University of Minnesota Ph.D. dissertation. July 2018. Major: Child Psychology. Advisors: Abigail Gewirtz, Bonni Klimes-Dougan. 1 computer file (PDF); viii, 137 pages.Although significant progress has been made in the development of trauma-focused evidence-based treatments (EBTs) for children and adolescents, the transfer of these interventions from academic to community practice settings remains challenging. This investigation is one of the first to assess the statewide implementation of a popular trauma-focused EBT for youth in routine practice settings. Using nine years of baseline and follow-up data, this investigation examined the implementation of Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) with 2,980 clients, 596 clinicians, and 75 community practice agencies. Clients were highly traumatized, reporting exposure to an average of four trauma types (SD = 2.85). Multilevel modeling indicated that clients participating in TF-CBT demonstrated statistically significant reductions in posttraumatic stress symptomatology from baseline to follow-up, as well as self- and parent-reported reductions in emotional symptoms, conduct problems, hyperactivity-inattention, peer problems, and the overall impact of these difficulties from baseline to follow-up. Clients also showed a statistically significant self- and parent-reported improvement in prosocial relations from baseline to follow-up. Although clinician TF-CBT implementation fidelity was not related to changes in client outcomes from baseline to follow-up, both clinician license and supervisory status were statistically significantly related to implementation fidelity score. Findings suggest that the large-scale implementation of TF-CBT is a promising approach to increasing the availability of trauma-focused EBTs in routine practice settings, while also reducing the primary and secondary effects of trauma in the lives of children and their families

The presenter will discuss the impacts that social interaction has on the literacy development of elementary aged children. Evidence will be provided for discussion based learning in classrooms through an analysis of data collected from interactions with children in their learning environments

Using gain-framed messaging to change attitudes toward menstruation and menstrual suppression

This study investigates the effect of gain-framed messaging on premenstrual distress and attitudes toward menstrual suppression. The theory of message framing asserts that the most effective means of promoting recuperative behaviors, such as reducing menstrual distress, is achieved by presenting a message in a gain-framed manner. Participants were randomly assigned to either a gain-framed messaging or control group. The gain-framed messaging group was given a pamphlet that presented a gain-framed message regarding the adoption of positive menstrual attitudes to decrease premenstrual distress. The control group received identical materials without the gain-framed message. After the intervention, no differences were observed between the two message groups, however, women in both groups showed significant positive attitudinal and somatic outcomes, and did not support the practice of menstrual suppression
