Shape and phase control of CdS nanocrystals using cationic surfactant in noninjection synthesis

Monodispersed CdS nanocrystals with controllable shape and phase have been successfully synthesized in this study by adding cationic surfactant in noninjection synthesis system. With the increase of the amount of cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) added, the shape of the CdS nanocrystals changed from spherical to multi-armed, and the phase changed from zinc-blende to wurtzite. It was found that halide ion Cl- plays a key role in the transformation, and other halide ions such as Br- can also induce similar transformation. We proposed that the strong binding between Cd2+ and halide ions reduced the reactivity of the precursors, decreased the nuclei formed in the nucleation stage, and led to the high concentration of precursor in the growth stage, resulting in the increase of size and phase transformation of CdS nanocrystals. In addition, it was found that the multi-armed CdS nanocrystals lost quantum confinement effect because of the increase of the size with the increase of the concentration of CTAC

Loss Rank Mining: A General Hard Example Mining Method for Real-time Detectors

Modern object detectors usually suffer from low accuracy issues, as foregrounds always drown in tons of backgrounds and become hard examples during training. Compared with those proposal-based ones, real-time detectors are in far more serious trouble since they renounce the use of region-proposing stage which is used to filter a majority of backgrounds for achieving real-time rates. Though foregrounds as hard examples are in urgent need of being mined from tons of backgrounds, a considerable number of state-of-the-art real-time detectors, like YOLO series, have yet to profit from existing hard example mining methods, as using these methods need detectors fit series of prerequisites. In this paper, we propose a general hard example mining method named Loss Rank Mining (LRM) to fill the gap. LRM is a general method for real-time detectors, as it utilizes the final feature map which exists in all real-time detectors to mine hard examples. By using LRM, some elements representing easy examples in final feature map are filtered and detectors are forced to concentrate on hard examples during training. Extensive experiments validate the effectiveness of our method. With our method, the improvements of YOLOv2 detector on auto-driving related dataset KITTI and more general dataset PASCAL VOC are over 5% and 2% mAP, respectively. In addition, LRM is the first hard example mining strategy which could fit YOLOv2 perfectly and make it better applied in series of real scenarios where both real-time rates and accurate detection are strongly demanded.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure

A study on thermal characteristic and sleeping comfort of a hybrid solar heating system applied in cold rural areas

A hybrid solar heating system combining a solar kang subsystem and a solar air heating subsystem for keeping indoor space within thermal comfort level has been investigated in this article for the climatic conditions of Qinghai Province (35°N 96°E)- China. The main aim of the current research is to study the hybrid heating system's thermal characteristic and the sleeping comfort for occupants of rural buildings. A mathematical model to study the hybrid heating system has been developed and the results have been validated by conducting an experimental study at a building located in Qinghai province. The influence of the different solar thermal collector areas, insulation levels of wall, thermal sensation of the system and different operation strategies have been investigated. It has been observed that the indoor temperature can be improved by up to 6°C when the ambient temperature is -7.8°C (average). By changing the solar collector area from 4m2 to 8m2, kang surface average temperature can be improved from 22°C to 31°C. Thermal load of sleeping can also be held steady within acceptable levels when the beddings insulation value is maintained at 4.0clo during night time. It has been observed that without auxiliary power, making the kang system work only at night would be more suitable in the experimental condition
