Growth and Neurodevelopment of HIV-Exposed Uninfected Children: a Conceptual Framework
PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: The population of HIV-exposed uninfected (HEU) children is expanding rapidly, and over one million HEU infants are born each year globally. Several recent studies have reported that HEU children, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, are at risk of poor outcomes, including impaired growth and neurodevelopment. However, the reasons for poor clinical outcomes amongst HEU children remain unclear. RECENT FINDINGS: We summarise the findings from recent large studies that have characterised growth and neurodevelopment in HEU children, identified risk factors and explored underlying mechanistic pathways. We propose a conceptual framework to explain how exposure to HIV and antiretroviral therapy (ART) may lead to adverse growth and neurodevelopment in uninfected children, and review the available evidence and research gaps. SUMMARY: We propose that HEU children are affected both indirectly, through the augmentation of universal risk factors underlying poor growth and neurodevelopment, and directly through HIV/ART-specific pathways, which ultimately may converge through a series of common pathogenic mechanisms. In the era of universal ART, a better understanding of these pathways is crucial to inform future prevention and intervention strategies
Summer Distribution of Bowhead Whales, Balaena mysticetus, Relative to Oil Industry Activities in the Canadian Beaufort Sea, 1980-84
Aerial surveys in 1980-84 showed that summer distribution of bowheads in the Beaufort Sea varied markedly between years. Distribution varied both outside and within the "main industrial area" (MIA), the area of island construction, drilling and intensive ship and helicopter traffic. Numbers of bowheads in the MIA were high in 1980, lower in 1981, near zero in 1982 and very low in 1983-84. The few whales in the MIA in 1983-84 were mainly near its edges, contrary to 1980-81. These data, plus limited evidence from 1976-79, indicate that bowheads were numerous in the centre of the MIA in 3 of 5 years from 1976-80 (1976-77, 1980) vs. 0 of 4 years from 1981-84. One hypothesis is that progressively increasing industrial activities affected bowhead distribution after 1980. However, bowheads probably also react to variations in their zooplankton prey, which may be affected by year-to-year changes in oceanography and weather. Influences of natural factors on zooplankton and bowheads need to be better understood in order to assess whether oil exploration caused any of the observed changes in bowhead distribution.Key words: bowhead whale, Balaena mysticetus, Beaufort Sea, oil exploration, seismic exploration, aerial surveysDes relevés aériens effectués entre 1980 et 1984 ont montré que la répartition estivale des baleines franches dans la mer de Beaufort varie nettement d’année en année. Deep Near-Infrared Observations of L1014: Revealing the nature of the core and its embedded source
Recently, the Spitzer Space Telescope discovered L1014-IRS, a mid-infrared
source with protostellar colors, toward the heretofore "starless" core L1014.
We present deep near-infrared observations that show a scattered light nebula
extending from L1014-IRS. This nebula resembles those typically associated with
protostars and young stellar objects, tracing envelope cavities presumably
evacuated by an outflow. The northern lobe of the nebula has an opening angle
of ~100 degrees, while the southern lobe is barely detected. Its morphology
suggests that the bipolar cavity and inferred protostellar disk is not inclined
more than 30 degrees from an edge-on orientation. The nebula extends at least
8" from the source at Ks, strongly suggesting that L1014-IRS is embedded within
L1014 at a distance of 200 pc rather than in a more distant cloud associated
with the Perseus arm at 2.6 kpc. In this case, the apparently low luminosity of
L1014-IRS, 0.090 Lsun, is consistent with it having a substellar mass. However,
if L1014-IRS is obscured by a circumstellar disk, its luminosity and inferred
mass may be greater. Using near-infrared colors of background stars, we
investigate characteristics of the L1014 molecular cloud core. We determine a
mass of 3.6 Msun for regions of the core with Av > 2 magnitudes. A comparison
of the radial extinction profile of L1014 with other cores suggests that L1014
may be among the most centrally condensed cores known, perhaps indicative of
the earliest stages of brown dwarf or star formation processes.Comment: Replacement includes revision to mass of core. 22 pages, 6 figures.

A Re-Examination of the Taxonomic Boundaries of \u3cem\u3eSymphysia\u3c/em\u3e (Ericaceae)
DNA sequence data were generated for the nuclear ITS region for Symphysia racemosa and for 26 additional Vaccinieae representing 12 sections in the genus Vaccinium plus one species from each of five additional segregate genera. Our focus is on the placement of S. racemosa relative to Vaccinium sensu scricto and Vaccinium sect. Oreades (represented by V. poasanum). Maximum parsimony analysis of 608 bp of nrITS region suggests that S. racemosa and V. poasanum form a well-supported clade in spite of substantial morphological divergence. Futhermore, this clade is a sister group to a clade consisting of all segregate genera examined. These molecular results led us to undertake a morphological cladistic analysis of all of the other Central American green-flowered taxa. We suggest that the genus Symphysia should be expanded to encompass these 15 taxa, despite the lack of phylogenetic resolution within this group. This will necessitate eight new combinations, via. Symphysia almedae (= V. almedae), Symphysia costaricensis (= V. costaricense), Symphysia jefensis (= V. jefense), Symphysia orosiensis (= V. orosiense), Symphysia ovata (= Lateropora ovata), Symphysia perardua (= V. santafeënsis), Symphysia poasana (= Vaccinium poasanum), Symphysia santafeënsis (= L. santafeënsis), and Symphysia tubulifera (= L. tubulifera)
Isotopic Constraints on the Chemical Evolution of Geothermal Fluids, Long Valley, CA
Abstract A spatial survey of the chemical and isotopic composition of fluids from the Long Valley hydrothermal system was conducted. Starting at the presumed hydrothermal upwelling zone in the west moat of the caldera, samples were collected from the Casa Diablo geothermal field and a series of monitoring wells defining a nearly linear, ~14 km long, west-to-east trend along the proposed fluid flow path Introduction The efficiency of heat extraction from geothermal reservoir rocks is limited by chemical processes and the physical characteristics of the reservoir. Specifically, mineral dissolution and precipitation and the geometry of heat and mass exchange between fluids and the reservoir lithologies of fractured dominated systems define the long term efficiency of heat extraction but are difficult to quantify and therefore predict. Increased knowledge about the water-rock exchange in geothermal systems and the size and spacing of the major fluid transporting fractures would be valuable information that impact decisions guiding the management of natural and enhanced geothermal systems
An Initial Survey of White Dwarfs in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
An initial assessment is made of white dwarf and hot subdwarf stars observed
in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. In a small area of sky (190 square degrees),
observed much like the full survey will be, 269 white dwarfs and 56 hot
subdwarfs are identified spectroscopically where only 44 white dwarfs and 5 hot
subdwarfs were known previously. Most are ordinary DA (hydrogen atmosphere) and
DB (helium) types. In addition, in the full survey to date, a number of WDs
have been found with uncommon spectral types. Among these are blue DQ stars
displaying lines of atomic carbon; red DQ stars showing molecular bands of C_2
with a wide variety of strengths; DZ stars where Ca and occasionally Mg, Na,
and/or Fe lines are detected; and magnetic WDs with a wide range of magnetic
field strengths in DA, DB, DQ, and (probably) DZ spectral types. Photometry
alone allows identification of stars hotter than 12000 K, and the density of
these stars for 15<g<20 is found to be ~2.2 deg^{-2} at Galactic latitudes
29-62 deg. Spectra are obtained for roughly half of these hot stars. The
spectra show that, for 15<g<17, 40% of hot stars are WDs and the fraction of
WDs rises to ~90% at g=20. The remainder are hot sdB and sdO stars.Comment: Accepted for AJ; 43 pages, including 12 figures and 5 table
The accretion origin of the Milky Way's stellar halo
We have used data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 5 to
explore the overall structure and substructure of the stellar halo of the Milky
Way using about 4 million color-selected main sequence turn-off stars. We fit
oblate and triaxial broken power-law models to the data, and found a `best-fit'
oblateness of the stellar halo 0.5<c/a<0.8, and halo stellar masses between
Galactocentric radii of 1 and 40kpc of (3.7+/-1.2)x10^8 M_sun. The density
profile of the stellar halo is approximately r^{-3}; it is possible that the
power law slope is shallower inside 20kpc and steeper outside that radius. Yet,
we found that all smooth and symmetric models were very poor fits to the
distribution of stellar halo stars because the data exhibit a great deal of
spatial substructure. We quantified deviations from a smooth oblate/triaxial
model using the RMS of the data around the model profile on scales >~100pc,
after accounting for the (known) contribution of Poisson uncertainties. The
fractional RMS deviation of the actual stellar distribution from any smooth,
parameterized halo model is >~40%: hence, the stellar halo is highly
structured. We compared the observations with simulations of galactic stellar
halos formed entirely from the accretion of satellites in a cosmological
context by analysing the simulations in the same way as the data. While the
masses, overall profiles, and degree of substructure in the simulated stellar
halos show considerable scatter, the properties and degree of substructure in
the Milky Way's halo match well the properties of a `typical' stellar halo
built exclusively out of the debris from disrupted satellite galaxies. Our
results therefore point towards a picture in which an important fraction of the
Milky Way's stellar halo has been accreted from satellite galaxies.Comment: Submitted to the Astrophysical Journal. 14 pages; 11 figure
