READING BETWEEN THE LINESTo explore how different perspectives can bring us together we have asked different artists and thinkers to respond to issues that were being unearthed as Covid-19 started to take its toll on our communities in March 2020. Each writer was asked to respond to a simple brief that in some way related to their lived experience, providing the opportunity to open up these issues, to better understand what we could and should have in common

Studies on the relationship between genes and enzymes
The experimental work and theoretical discussion presented
here suggests the following main conclusions.1. Argininosuccinase may be detected in extracts of a standard
wild -type (SLA) and measurements may be made of some of the kinetics
of its catalysis. I:t is considered likely, from these kinetic data
and from the information on the behaviour of the enzyme on hydroxylapatite
gel and on electrophoresis, that the enzyme is a single protein species.2. A report is given of an examination of some of the arg-10 mutants
and of a heterokaryon between two of them.3.. The production and genetics of revertants of some of these arg-10
mutants, is described and it is suggested that at least two of the revertants
(362r-1 and 362r-2) are the result of mutation(s) at or close to the
arg-10 locus.4. The argininosuccinase formed by 362r-1 is described and it is
proposed that the differences between this enzyme and that of the
original wild-type (SLA) may be explained as the result of an alteration
to the structure of the enzyme involving the active site.5. The argininosuccinase formed by 362r-2 is described and it is
proposed that this enzyme differs both from that found in SLA and in
362r-1 and that this is also a reflection of an alteration in the
structure of the active site of the enzyme.6. Some of the properties of argininosuccinase from K32 3-revertants are described and it is suggested that they may not differ in any
way from the enzyme of SLA.7. A discussion is given of the growth of Neurospora crassa in
culture and it is concluded that the growth -curves of the organism
are complex and depend on the culture conditions.8. Measurements of argininosuccinase, argininosuccinic acid and
arginine in cultures of SLA and 362r-1 are reported and the results
obtained are explained in terms of a kinetic model of the arginine
pathway in vivo. It is suggested that the concentration of arginine
must always be independent of argininosuccinase concentration (at
steady-state).9. In a discussion of the experiments and theory presented, the
thesis is proposed that there are at least two major classes of
catalyses, 'buffered" and "unbuffered", and that the genes affecting
the enzymes concerned with these two types of catalyses will have
distinct properties
The grand veteran organizations and their affiliates: lobbyists and revolutionaries
The Grand Army of the Republic was a critical and underappreciated organizations that historians view with a narrow lens. Organizations such as the Grand Army of the Republic, United Confederate Veterans and the women’s organizations that aligned themselves with these two veterans’ organizations developed educational curriculum and traditions that continued in contemporary schools in the United States. The GAR allowed integration, and thus a voice to African-Americans. For women had a social outlet and political influence by associating with both northern and southern veterans. Many times, these details take a back seat to the restrictions these populations faced. Civil War soldiers and veterans brought about changes to United States pension and voting policy. The Union veterans and the Women’s Relief and Corps solidified a national identity, while the UCV and the southern women created the Lost Cause which has permeated the American consciousness.
Using primary and secondary sources this paper evaluates the GAR, WRC, UCV, and the Daughters of the Confederacy and the role they had on American society. Many areas these organizations influenced continue to have major impacts on contemporary America. This paper also uses sources view these organizations as having positive and negative influences. Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering at HERA
Deeply virtual Compton scattering has recently been studied by three HERA
experiments, H1, ZEUS and HERMES, covering a broad range of kinematic regimes.
We present cross section measurements of the two collider experiments in the
kinematic region 2<Q^2<100 GeV^2 and 30<W<140 GeV, and compare them to
QCD-based calculations. HERMES measurements of azimuthal asymmetries and their
kinematical dependences are presented for Q^2>1 GeV^2 and 2<W<7 GeV.Comment: 4 pages, 8 figures, submitted to ICHEP 2002 proceedings; citations

The Royal College of Ophthalmologists' National Ophthalmology Database study of cataract surgery: report 1, visual outcomes and complications.
Aim
To describe the outcomes of cataract surgery in the United Kingdom.
Methods
Anonymised data on 180 114 eyes from 127 685 patients undergoing cataract surgery between August 2006 and November 2010 were collected prospectively from 28 sites. Outcome measures included intraoperative and postoperative complication rates, and preoperative and postoperative visual acuities.
Results
Median age at first eye surgery was 77.1 years, 36.9% cases had ocular co-pathology and 41.0% patients underwent cataract surgery on both eyes. Preoperative visual acuity was 0.30 logMAR or better in 32.0% first eyes and 47.7% second eyes. Postoperative best-measured visual acuity was 0.00 and 0.30 logMAR or better in 50.8 and 94.6% eyes without ocular co-pathology, and 32.5 and 79.9% in eyes with co-pathology. For eyes without co-pathology, postoperative uncorrected distance visual acuity was 0.00 and 0.30 logMAR or better in 27.3 and 80.9% eyes. Posterior capsule rupture or vitreous loss or both occurred in 1.95% cases, and was associated with a 42 times higher risk of retinal detachment surgery within 3 months and an eight times higher risk of endophthalmitis.
Conclusion
These results provide updated data for the benchmarking of cataract surgery. Visual outcomes, and the rate of posterior capsule rupture or vitreous loss or both appear stable over the past decade

This story details how parishioners in several New York City Catholic parishes responded to news that their churches would be shuttered by the New York Archdiocese. Parishioners appealed to the Vatican to overturn Cardinal Timothy Dolan\u27s decisions, and the story details their struggle with church hierarchy and their own personal challenges
Donachie, Rhodes, Ryan
This exhibition marked the first three years of the Freelands Award, while drawing attention to the fourth iteration of our research report into opportunities for female artists in the UK. It included works by the first three recipients of the award – Jacqueline Donachie (2016, The Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh), Lis Rhodes (2017, Nottingham Contemporary) and Veronica Ryan (2018, Spike Island, Bristol). The exhibition featured Donachie’s An Era of Small Pleasures, a major sculptural installation; Rhodes’s Notes from Light Music, a seminal film from 1975–77 made in response to the absence of female composers from the classical canon, and Veronica Ryan’s Salvage. The gallery’s Reading Room focused on the research and the evolution of the award, highlighting all the organisations that have been shortlisted to date, including those shortlisted for the Freelands Award Year 4.As well as celebrating this award, the exhibition coincided with the publication of our research report into representation of female artists in Britain. The exhibition provided a forum where audiences could find out about the research we conducted to investigate the current position of the female artist. As a key focus of the Foundation’s work over the past four years, it was an appropriate time to explore the shift in climate in relation to the visibility and representation of female artists in the UK. A discussion focusing on the issues evidenced in the report took place on the 9th July, where artist Jacqueline Donachie was in conversation with writer and curator Jenni Lomax.</p
