    A Comparison of Fermentation Kinetics in the Rumen of Grazing Sheep on a Dwarf Bamboo Pasture and a Grass Pasture

    Native grasses grown as forest understory are important forage resources for grazing ruminants and in agroforestry. Dwarf bamboo is one such typical grass and has traditionally been used in Japan. The name “dwarf bamboo” refers to a group of native grasses from certain genera (e.g., Sasa spp. and Pleioblastus spp.). These grasses are generally rhizomatous, perennial, and semi-woody (Usui, 1961). The results of an earlier study suggested that the in sacco ruminal degradation of the dwarf bamboo was inferior to that of a common tropical grass (Yayota et al. 2009), and cattle grazing on a forest pasture dominated by a dwarf bamboo could not satisfy their energy requirement in fall regardless of forage availability (Nakano et al. 2007). However, little information is available about the fermentation kinetics of dwarf bamboo or of many other native forage plants in the rumen. Understanding fermentation kinetics will be useful to improve the utilization of this grass and to plan supple-mental feeding strategies.     Effects of continual intermittent administration of parathyroid hormone on implant stability in the presence of osteoporosis: an in vivo study using resonance frequency analysis in a rabbit model

    Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of continual intermittent administration of parathyroid hormone (PTH) on implant stability in the presence of osteoporosis, using rabbit models. Material and Methods: Fifteen female New Zealand white rabbits underwent ovariectomy and were administered glucocorticoids to induce osteoporosis, following which they were divided into three groups. The first group received intermittent subcutaneous PTH for 4 weeks until implant placement (PTH1), while the second and third groups received PTH (PTH2) and saline (control), respectively, for 4 weeks before and after implant placement. After intermittent administration of PTH or saline, titanium implants were inserted into the left femoral epiphyses of all animals, and the implant stability quotient (ISQ) was measured immediately after placement to assess the primary stability and at 2 and 4 weeks after implant placement to assess osseointegration. At 4 weeks after implant placement, histological and histomorphometric evaluations were conducted and the bone area around the implant socket was measured as a ratio of the total bone area to the total tissue area.     Smoking Cessation after Discharge among Japanese Patients with Established Ischemic Heart Disease: A Prospective Cohort Study

    In this prospective cohort study for Japanese patients with established ischemic heart disease (IHD), the authors investigated the rate of success of smoking cessation 3 months after hospital discharge and its related factors. The subjects included 90 current smokers admitted for IHD. A total of 58 subjects (64%) had quit smoking for 3 months after being discharged. In comparison with subjects with acute myocardial infarction, those with stable angina (SA) showed a significantly lower frequency of smoking cessation (relative risk of resuming smoking (95% confidence interval):2.06 (1.09, 3.92), p=0.036). This relationship remained significant even after controlling for sex, age, and scores of the Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence (adjusted odds ratio:3.39 (1.01, 11.37), p=0.048). However, it became insignificant when hospital admission followed by emergency medical service (EMS) care was additionally adjusted (adjusted odds ratio:2.48 (0.36, 16.97), p=0.356). The smoking cessation rate in this study was identical to that observed in studies conducted in Japan prior to the recent social changes with regard to tobacco use. SA still appears to be a risk factor for smoking resumption after discharge. Experiencing EMS care would be an intermediate variable in this relationship.</p

    Investigation of Effective Modification Treatments for Titanium Membranes

    Titanium membranes are used for guided bone regeneration in implant therapy. However, as a bioinert material, titanium does not have the ability to accelerate bone formation. Various titanium surface treatments to confer bioactivity have been demonstrated; however, there are concerns about the influence of chemical treatments for thin titanium membranes. This study investigated the influence of surface modifications on the structure of titanium membranes. Titanium membranes of 20 μm thickness were treated with acid or alkali solutions, and we evaluated their surface structure, wettability, thickness, and mechanical strength compared to non-treated membranes. Alkali-treated titanium membranes displayed the formation of nanoscale pore structures on their surfaces, enhanced hydrophilicity, and almost same thickness compared with acid-treated membranes. Furthermore, the tensile strength of alkali-treated membranes was comparable to non-treated membranes. These results suggest that alkali treatment is an appropriate surface modification method for titanium membranes
