Slow Quenches Produce Fuzzy, Transient Vortices
We examine the Zurek scenario for the production of vortices in quenches of
liquid in the light of recent experiments. Extending our previous
results to later times, we argue that short wavelength thermal fluctuations
make vortices poorly defined until after the transition has occurred. Further,
if and when vortices appear, it is plausible that that they will decay faster
than anticipated from turbulence experiments, irrespective of quench rates.Comment: 4 pages, Revtex file, no figures Apart from a more appropriate title,

The formation of vortex loops (strings) in continuous phase transitions
The formation of vortex loops (global cosmic strings) in an O(2) linear sigma
model in three spatial dimensions is analyzed numerically. For over-damped
Langevin dynamics we find that defect production is suppressed by an
interaction between correlated domains that reduces the effective spatial
variation of the phase of the order field. The degree of suppression is
sensitive to the quench rate. A detailed description of the numerical methods
used to analyze the model is also reported.Comment: LaTeX, 17 pages, 6 eps figures 2 references and a footnote adde
Mixed perturbative expansion: the validity of a model for the cascading
A new type of perturbative expansion is built in order to give a rigorous
derivation and to clarify the range of validity of some commonly used model
equations.
This model describes the evolution of the modulation of two short and
localized pulses, fundamental and second harmonic, propagating together in a
bulk uniaxial crystal with non-vanishing second order susceptibility
and interacting through the nonlinear effect known as ``cascading'' in
nonlinear optics.
The perturbative method mixes a multi-scale expansion with a power series
expansion of the susceptibility, and must be carefully adapted to the physical
situation. It allows the determination of the physical conditions under which
the model is valid: the order of magnitude of the walk-off, phase-mismatch,and
anisotropy must have determined values.Comment: arxiv version is already officia
New Experiments for Spontaneous Vortex Formation in Josephson Tunnel Junctions
It has been argued by Zurek and Kibble that the likelihood of producing
defects in a continuous phase transition depends in a characteristic way on the
quench rate. In this paper we discuss an improved experiment for measuring the
Zurek-Kibble scaling exponent for the production of fluxons in
annular symmetric Josephson Tunnel Junctions. We find .
Further, we report accurate measurements of the junction gap voltage
temperature dependence which allow for precise monitoring of the fast
temperature variations during the quench.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Mean-field dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a time-dependent triple-well trap: Nonlinear eigenstates, Landau-Zener models and STIRAP
We investigate the dynamics of a Bose--Einstein condensate (BEC) in a
triple-well trap in a three-level approximation. The inter-atomic interactions
are taken into account in a mean-field approximation (Gross-Pitaevskii
equation), leading to a nonlinear three-level model. New eigenstates emerge due
to the nonlinearity, depending on the system parameters. Adiabaticity breaks
down if such a nonlinear eigenstate disappears when the parameters are varied.
The dynamical implications of this loss of adiabaticity are analyzed for two
important special cases: A three level Landau-Zener model and the STIRAP
scheme. We discuss the emergence of looped levels for an equal-slope
Landau-Zener model. The Zener tunneling probability does not tend to zero in
the adiabatic limit and shows pronounced oscillations as a function of the
velocity of the parameter variation. Furthermore we generalize the STIRAP
scheme for adiabatic coherent population transfer between atomic states to the
nonlinear case. It is shown that STIRAP breaks down if the nonlinearity exceeds
the detuning.Comment: RevTex4, 7 pages, 11 figures, content extended and title/abstract

Tzitz\'eica transformation is a dressing action
We classify the simplest rational elements in a twisted loop group, and prove
that dressing actions of them on proper indefinite affine spheres give the
classical Tzitz\'eica transformation and its dual. We also give the group point
of view of the Permutability Theorem, construct complex Tzitz\'eica
transformations, and discuss the group structure for these transformations
Testing the Kibble-Zurek Scenario with Annular Josephson Tunnel Junctions
In parallel with Kibble's description of the onset of phase transitions in
the early universe, Zurek has provided a simple picture for the onset of phase
transitions in condensed matter systems, strongly supported by agreement with
experiments in He3. In this letter we show how experiments with annular
Josephson tunnel Junctions can and do provide further support for this
scenario.Comment: Revised version with correct formula for the Swihart velocity. The
results are qualitatively the same as with the previous version but differ
quantitatively. 4 pages, RevTe
Atom laser coherence and its control via feedback
We present a quantum-mechanical treatment of the coherence properties of a
single-mode atom laser. Specifically, we focus on the quantum phase noise of
the atomic field as expressed by the first-order coherence function, for which
we derive analytical expressions in various regimes. The decay of this function
is characterized by the coherence time, or its reciprocal, the linewidth. A
crucial contributor to the linewidth is the collisional interaction of the
atoms. We find four distinct regimes for the linewidth with increasing
interaction strength. These range from the standard laser linewidth, through
quadratic and linear regimes, to another constant regime due to quantum
revivals of the coherence function. The laser output is only coherent (Bose
degenerate) up to the linear regime. However, we show that application of a
quantum nondemolition measurement and feedback scheme will increase, by many
orders of magnitude, the range of interaction strengths for which it remains
coherent.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, revtex
Adiabaticity Criterion for Moving Vortices in Dilute Bose-Einstein Condensates
Considering a moving vortex line in a dilute atomic Bose-Einstein condensate
within time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov-Popov theory, we derive a
criterion for the quasiparticle excitations to follow the vortex core rigidly.
The assumption of adiabaticity, which is crucial for the validity of the
stationary self-consistent theories in describing such time-dependent
phenomena, is shown to imply a stringent criterion for the velocity of the
vortex line. Furthermore, this condition is shown to be violated in the recent
vortex precession experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
