Chemical composition and antibacterial activities of essential oils from fruits of Melicope pteleifolia (Champ. Ex Benth.) T.G. Hartley grown in Lam Dong Province, Vietnam

    Get PDF
In the present study, chemical composition and antibacterial properties of essential oil obtained from the aerial parts of the Melicope pteleifolia (Champ. ex Benth.) T.G Hartley in Dalat were evaluated. Essential oil was isolated through hydro-distillation. Twenty-nine constituents comprising 100% of the essential oil were characterized by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC-MS) techniques. The major compounds in the essential oil were (+)-Sabinene (34.73%), Cis-α-bergamotene (13.15%), Z-α-trans-bergamotol (5.28%), β-mycrene (4.98%), and 1,3,6-octatriene, 3,7-dimethyl-(4.71%). Antibacterial activities of Melicope pteleifolia essential oil were investigated against Gram-positive and-negative bacteria. Results showed significant activities against Streptococcus pyogenes and Escherichia coli using an agar well diffusion method. The application of this essential oil in preventing and eliminating bacteria could be useful in fields as medicine and cosmetics.

A numerical model for the tidal oscillation and current in the Gulf of Tonkin

    Get PDF
in this paper results of a numerical model, based on the TIDEFLOW-2DSoftware, for the tidal oscillation and current in the Gulf of Tonkin (GT) are presented. The model was tested as follows: i) the observed values of the four main tidal constituents M2, S2, K1, 01 at the 44 coastal stations and islands were compared with computed ones; ii). the computed tidal levels were compared with the correlative ones in the Tide Tables at the six stations: Hon Gai, Cua Ong, Hon Dau, Cua Hoi, Cua Gianh and Cua Tung in many monthly periods; iii) the results of computed tidal levels and currents were compared with the observed data. The results of testing show a good agreement between the available data and computed values, therefore we can use this model for simulation t ide level and current of GT. The results of using this model in GT: distribution of the major harmonic constituents; the tidal elevation and current patterns; the extremal values of the tidal level and current,... will be published later

    The VATLY Radio Telescope

    Get PDF
A small radio telescope (SRT) has been installed on the roof of the Hanoi astrophysics laboratory VATLY. It is equipped with a 2.6 m diameter mobile parabolic dish remotely controlled in elevation and azimuth and with super-heterodyne detection around the 21 cm hydrogen line. First results of observations of the Sun and of the centre of the Milky Way are presented. They demonstrate the high quality of the telescope performance and are used to evaluate lobe size, signal to noise ratios, anthropogenic interferences and measurement accuracies. Particular attention is given to the measurement of the pointing accuracy. The rich measurement programme that is now at hand is briefly sketched

Simulation of proton-induced and iron-induced extensive air showers at extreme energies

The development of extensive air showers at extreme energies is studied using a simulation model much simpler and cruder, but also more transparent and flexible, than existing sophisticated codes. Evidence for its satisfactory performance is presented. As an illustration, shower elongation rates are evaluated in the 101810^{18} to 102010^{20} eV region and compared with recently published data. Lateral distribution functions of both muons and electrons/photons are also briefly discussed. Reliable results are obtained in the comparison between proton-induced and iron-induced showers.Comment: 22 pages, Preprint submitted to Astroparticle Physic

    Trichinellosis in Vietnam

    Get PDF
Trichinellosis is a zoonotic parasitic disease with a worldwide distribution. The aim of this work was to describe the epidemiological and clinical data of five outbreaks of trichinellosis, which affected ethnic minorities living in remote mountainous areas of northwestern Vietnam from 1970 to 2012. Trichinellosis was diagnosed in 126 patients, of which 11 (8.7%) were hospitalized and 8 (6.3%) died. All infected people had consumed raw pork from backyard and roaming pigs or wild boar at wedding, funeral, or New Year parties. The short incubation period (average of 9.5 days), the severity of the symptoms, which were characterized by diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, myalgia, edema, weight loss, itch, and lisping, and the high mortality, suggest that patients had ingested a high number of larvae. The larval burden in pigs examined in one of the outbreaks ranged from 70 to 879 larvae/g. These larvae and those collected from a muscle biopsy taken from a patient from the 2012 outbreak were identified as Trichinella spiralis. Data presented in this work show that the northern regions of Vietnam are endemic areas for Trichinella infections in domestic pigs and humans

Clinical and Microbiological Features of Pediatric Endopthalmitis After Open Globe Injury in the North of VietNam

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Pediatric endophthalmitis after open-globe injury had its clinical features, microbiological profile different from those in aldults. In Viet Nam, there was no report on the clinical and microbiological characteristic of pediatric posttraumatic endophthalmitis. Therefore, we conduct this study. AIM: To describe clinical features, ultrasound results, gram stain and culture results of endophthalmitis in pediatric open globe injuries. METHODS: Prospective non-controlled study. Case series of 30 eyes presenting with post-traumatic endophthalmitis between 2015 and 2016 were reviewed. RESULTS: Mean age was 8.03 ± 3.99 years. Metallic and organic etiologies were most common causes for injuries (n = 11). 27 cases had penetrating corneal trauma. Dense opaque vitreous was seen in 25 eyes. Retinal necrosis < 1 quadrant and chorioretinal abscess > 1 quadrant were most common fundus lesions. Dense vitreous opacity on ultrasound was most common (n = 28). Gram stain bacteria positivity was 93.3%, gram-positive were isolated in 63.3%. Vitreous samples were more often positive than aqueous (P = 0,002). CONCLUSION: Posttraumatic endophthalmitis in children is more common in boys aged 6-10 years and most often caused by injury with metallic and organic matter. Culture results were very low. Vitreous samples were more often positive than aqueous. Gram-positive bacteria were the most common causative organism

Silicon quantum-dots-based optical probe for fluorometric detection of Cr6+ ions

    Get PDF
In this report, silicon quantum dots (SiQDs) with the NH2 functional group were synthesized with the hydrothermal method. The as-prepared SiQDs exhibit a strong fluorescence emission peak               at 441 nm when excited at 355 nm and are effectively quenched upon adding Cr6+ ions. Hence, SiQDs were used as an optical probe to detect Cr6+ ions in solutions. The crystal structure of SiQDs was characterized by using X-ray diffraction (XRD). The Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) was used to determine the linker groups on the SiQDs surface. The fluorescence spectroscopic technique with an excitation wavelength of 355 nm was used to quantify the Cr6+ ion concentration in the solutions in the range of 0.1–1000 µM. Competition from common coexisting ions, such as K+, Na+, Al3+, Zn2+, and Pb2+, was ignorable. The test with actual samples showed good linearity for the Cr6+ concentration range of 0.1–50 µM
