    Polyphenolic content, Antioxidant and Anti-inflammatory activities of Melon (Cucumis melo L. var. inodorus) Seeds

    The aim of this study was to estimate the content of polyphenols, flavonoids and tannins compounds and to evaluate the antioxidant activity and  the  in vitro anti-inflammatory  of    the ethanolic extract of  melon (Cucumis melo L.  var inodorus) seeds. The Folin-Ciocalteau and AlCl3 methods were applied in order to quantify the polyphenolic and flavonoids contents, respectively. However, DPPH and  β-carotene bleaching  method were applied  to evaluate the  in vitro antioxidant activity. The polyphenolic  and flavonoids contents  of    seeds  extract  were  found to be 37,10 ± 1,11 mg GAE/g of dry extract and 0,43 ± 0,27 mg QE/ g  of dry extract, respectively. Whereas the amount of tannins was  48, 30 ±  0,90 mg TAE/ g of dry extract. The scavenger effect of  seeds extract against DPPH radicals showed IC50 value of  4,13 ± 0,07 mg/ ml. The β-carotene bleaching assay indicated a strong inhibition percentage of the lipid peroxidation with value of 69,47 %. The in vitro anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated using the inhibition of   proteins denaturation revealed that the seeds extract had a moderate anti-inflammatory activity which is estimated at 49,09 % compared to the aspirin (97,73  %) at 1 mg/ ml.  Finally, melon seeds may be considered as a promising source of natural antioxidants which possess remarkable therapeutic action as inflammatory activity and may serve as food ingredients.     Cartographie des linéaments géologiques en domaine aride par extraction semi-automatique à partir d’images satellitaires: Exemple à la région d’El Kseïbat (Sahara algérien)

    Geologists in charge of a detailed lineament mapping in arid and desert area, face the extent of the land and the abundance of eolian deposits. This study presents a semi-automatic approach of extraction of lineament, different from other methods, such as the automatic extraction and manual extraction, by being both fast and objective. It consists of a series of digital processing (textural and spatial filtering, binarization by thresholding and mathematic morphology ... etc.) applied to a Landsat 7 ETM+scene. This semi-automatic approach has produced a detailed map of lineaments, while taking account of tectonic directions recognized in the region. It helps mitigate the effect of dune deposits meet the specifications of arid environment. The visual validation of these linear structures, by geoscientists and field data, allowed the identification of the majority of structural lineaments or at least those tried geological.[fr] Les géologues en charge d’une cartographie des linéaments détaillée en domaine aride et désertique, font face à l’étendue des terrains et la présence abondante de dépôts éoliens. La présente étude présente une approche semi-automatique différente des autres méthodes d’extraction des linéaments, à savoir l’extraction automatique et l’extraction manuelle par le fait d’être à la fois rapide et objective. Elle consiste en une succession de traitements numériques (filtrage textural et spatial, binarisation par seuillage et morphologie mathématique…etc.) appliqués sur une scène LANDSAT-7 ETM+. Cette approche semi-automatique a permis d’obtenir une carte détaillée des linéaments, tout en tenant compte des directions tectoniques reconnues dans la région. Elle permet d’atténuer l’effet des dépôts dunaires répondant aux spécifications du contexte aride. La validation visuelle de ces structures linéaires, effectuée sur terrain et sur la base de la carte géologique et des données géoscientifiques existantes, a permis l’identification de la majorité des linéaments jugés structuraux ou du moins géologiques

    Design and Analysis of a Microstrip Antenna Based on Superconducting Material for Millimeter Wave Applications

    In this paper, we present a design and analysis of microstrip antenna based on superconducting material for millimeter wave applications. The proposed antenna is simulated using electromagnetic microwave studio computer simulator CST. The structure is made by two materials: the yttrium barium copper oxide (YBCO) thin film superconductor material as the patch and silicon Si as substrate with permittivity of 11.9. The superconductor material is characterized by a conductivity of 1.62×10⁷ S/m and critical high temperature of 89 K. The simulated results concerning the return loss show that our structure has ultra wide band over 27 to 70 GHz. Low return loss of the superconductor antenna compared with his perfect conductor counterpart is achieved. In addition, good radiation pattern characteristics are obtained in the frequency band of operation. The proposed antenna has also overall size of 3×3 mm², which facilitate its integration in architecture of communications systems

    Gastroprotective and antioxidant properties of ethanolic extract from pear fruit (Pyrus communis L.)

    The objective of this study was to evaluate the phenolic content, in vitro antioxidant activity and the gastroprotective effect of the ethanolic extract of pear fruits (Pyrus communis L.). The amount of polyphenols and flavonoids contents of ethanolic extract were found to be 77,50 ± 2,50 mg GAE/g of dry extract and 0,31 ± 0,003 mg QE/ g of dry extract, respectively. Whereas the amount of tannins was 61,43 ± 0,009 mg TAE/ g of dry extract. Hydroxyl radical scavenging and reducing power tests were used to evaluate the antioxidant activities of this extract. The scavenging effect of ethanolic extract against hydroxyl radicals showed IC50 value of 2.71 ± 0.02 mg/ ml. Reducing power test indicated the ability of ethanolic extract of pear fruits to reduce Fe+2 to Fe+3&nbsp; with EC50value of 1.043±0.01 mg/ml. The treatment of rats with the ethanolic extract at&nbsp; dose of 200 mg/kg reduced the ulcerogenic effect of ethanol with value of protection rate of 94.44%, but the protection rate decreased in 600 mg/kg treated group&nbsp; to 90.17%.&nbsp; In conclusion, natural antioxidants derived from pear fruits can prevent gastric ulcer through their antioxidant activity&nbsp; Keywords: Pyrus communis L., Polyphenols, Antioxidant activity, Ulcer, Rat

    Phenolic content and antioxidant activity of ethanolic extracts from Citrus sinensis L. and Citrus reticulata L. fruits

    Citrus fruits, in particular the genus Citrus, are very rich in antioxidants which have beneficial effects on human health. The objective of this study was to evaluate the phenolic content and the antioxidant activity of the ethanolic extracts from orange (Citrus sinensis L.) and mandarin (Citrus reticulata L.) fruits. The quantitative estimation of the total phenolic content in the two extracts revealed their richness in these compounds. The results obtained showed that the polyphenols content were 159.66 ± 2.62 mg GAE / g of dry extract and 127.33 ± 2.32 mg GAE / g of dry extract for C. sinensis and C. reticulata, respectively.The quantification of flavonoids content showed that the ethanolic extracts of C. sinensis and C. reticulata contained 0.85 ± 0.01 mg QE / g of dry extract and 0.876 ± 0.073 mg QE / g of dry extract, respectively. Whereas, the tannins contents were 46.32 ± 1.02 mg TAE / g of dry extract for&nbsp; C. sinensis and 47.65 ± 1.36 mg TAE / g of dry extract for C. reticulata. In vitro antioxidant activity was evaluated using two tests: the reducing power and the hydroxyl radical scavenger test. The evaluation of the two extracts by the ferric iron reducing power test showed an EC50 value of 0.882 ± 0.037 mg / ml for&nbsp; C. sinensis extract and an EC50 of 1.085 ± 0.068 mg / ml for C. reticulata extract. In addition, C. sinensis and C. reticulata showed good hydroxyl radical scavenging effect with IC50 values of 0.303 ± 0.026 mg /ml and 0.572 ± 0.100 mg / ml for C. sinensis and C. reticulata, respectively. These results suggested that these fruit extracts could be good sources of phenolic compounds and ingredients with high antioxidant potential.     The difficulties of access and detailed measurements of land surface temperature (LST) and water surface temperature (WST) especially in wetlands made the use of remote sensing data as one of the sources and techniques to estimate many climate elements including surface temperature and surface emissivity (ɛ). This study aims to estimate the surface temperature of the wetland of Lake Oubeira located in northeastern Algeria and their spatiotemporal evolution in both land and water. Landsat OLI-TIRS images in two dates (April and September 2016) obtained from the USGS have been used in this work, and forms the basis of a series of operations to obtain the final LST: development of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), conversion of the digital number (DN) of the thermal infrared band (TIR) into spectral radiance as well as the calculation of the effective luminosity temperature of the sensor from the spectral radiation and surface emissivity (ɛ). The results show that the LST varies in space and time (from 16 to 31°C in April and from 24 to 41°C in September). This implies that the absorption of the equilibrium temperature at land cover depends on the optical properties of the surface, which are essentially determined by its water content, colour and morphology. At the same time, the water surface is the lowest land cover temperature, which also has a spatial variation (from 19 to 25°C in April and from 26 to 34.5°C in September) induced by atmospheric temperature, wind direction and speed and the depth of the lake.Trudności w dostępie do badanych obszarów i w wykonaniu szczegółowych pomiarów temperatury powierzchni ziemi (LST) i wody (WST), szczególnie w środowiskach podmokłych, sprawiają, że dane pozyskane metodą teledetekcji są źródłem informacji do szacowania elementów klimatu takich jak temperatura powierzchni i emisyjność (ɛ). Celem przedstawionych badań było określenie temperatury powierzchni siedlisk podmokłych jeziora Oubeira w północnowschodniej Algierii i jej zmian zarówno na ziemi, jak i w wodzie. W pracy wykorzystano obrazy Landsat OLI-TIRS z dwóch terminów (kwiecień i wrzesień 2016 r.) uzyskane z United States Geological Survey (USGS). Stanowiły one podstawę działań zmierzających do uzyskania końcowej temperatury LST – uzyskanie znormalizowanego różnicowego wskaźnika wegetacji (NDVI), konwersję numeru DN termicznego pasma podczerwieni (TIR) do spektralnej radiancji oraz obliczenie efektywnej temperatury barwowej sensora ze spektralnego promieniowania i emisyjności powierzchniowej (ɛ). Wyniki wskazują, że LST zmienia się w czasie i w przestrzeni (od 16 do 31°C w kwietniu i od 24 do 41°C we wrześniu). Oznacza to, że absorpcja temperatury przez pokrycie powierzchni ziemi zależy od optycznych właściwości powierzchni, które są określone przez zawartość wody, barwę i morfologię. Najniższą temperaturę wykazuje powierzchnia wody. Temperatura wody także ulega zmianom (od 19 do 25°C w kwietniu i od 26 do 34.5°C we wrześniu), wywołanym przez temperaturę powietrza, kierunek i prędkość wiatru oraz głębokość jeziora

    The aim of this study was to estimate the content of polyphenols, flavonoids and tannins and to evaluate the antioxidant property and the antiulcer activity of the ethanolic extract of melon (Cucumis melo L. var. inodorus) pulp on ethanol-induced gastric ulcers in rats.&nbsp; Ferric reducing power and hydroxyl radical scavenging tests were applied to evaluate the in vitro antioxidant activity. The polyphenolic and flavonoids contents of&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;melon extract were found to be 56.5 ± 2.49 mg GAE/g of dry extract and 0.43 ± 0.09 mg QE/ g of dry extract, respectively. Whereas the tannins content was 48. 30 ±&nbsp; 0. 9 mg ETA/ g of dry extract.&nbsp; Melon pulp&nbsp; extract exhibited&nbsp; a good reducing potential&nbsp;&nbsp; with&nbsp; an&nbsp; EC50 of&nbsp; 4.23 ± 0.08 mg/ml and high hydroxyl radical scavenging activity with IC50 of &nbsp;1.83± 0.09 mg/ml. Oral administration of the melon pulp extract at doses of&nbsp; 200 and 600 mg/kg to rats&nbsp; reduced gastric mucosal lesions&nbsp; dose-dependently&nbsp; with percentage protection of 56.56 and 93.79% compared to omeprazole (95.92 %) as reference drug. These results showed that the melon pulp extract had a good antioxidant activity and gastroprotective potential suggesting it use as an adjuvant in the treatment of gastric ulcer.
