    A Contribution to the Modal Identification of the Damping Factor based on the Dissipated Energy

    ABSTRACT: The identification of the modal parameters from frequency response functions is a subject that is not new. However, the starting point often comes from the equations that govern the dynamic motion. In this paper, a novel approach is shown, resulting from an analysis that starts on the dissipated energy per cycle of vibration. For lightly damped systems with conveniently spaced modes, it produced quite accurate results in comparison to the direct application of the method of the inverse, both in the numerical and in the experimental examples. It also is a simple technique that can be used to produce quick estimates of the modal damping factors. Furthermore, this is also a contribution to further developments on modal analysis and identification methods as, up to today, the developed technique has not yet been proposed.Final Published versio

    Can an Industry Voluntary Agreement on Food Traceability Minimize the Cost of Food Safety Incidents?

    In the recent past the United States has had a number of severe food-safety outbreaks in the produce, vegetable and beef industry that greatly disrupted the food system. In all these outbreaks here were severe disruptions on sales that affected the whole industry, and it took an extended period of time to correctly locate the source of the outbreak. Traceability can be an effective tool to reduce the impact of food safety incidents my expediting the search for the origin of outbreaks. This paper investigates to what extent an industry-led voluntary agreement for providing traceability can reduce the cost of a food-safety outbreak. We find that a voluntary agreement on traceability can successfully reduce the cost of a food-safety outbreak but will unlikely achieve the optimal social level of traceability because of significant free riding.Traceability, voluntary agreements, food safety, Food Consumption/Nutrition/Food Safety,

    New or ν\nu Missing Energy? Discriminating Dark Matter from Neutrino Interactions at the LHC

    Missing energy signals such as monojets are a possible signature of Dark Matter (DM) at colliders. However, neutrino interactions beyond the Standard Model may also produce missing energy signals. In order to conclude that new "missing particles" are observed the hypothesis of BSM neutrino interactions must be rejected. In this paper, we first derive new limits on these Non-Standard neutrino Interactions (NSIs) from LHC monojet data. For heavy NSI mediators, these limits are much stronger than those coming from traditional low-energy ν\nu scattering or ν\nu oscillation experiments for some flavor structures. Monojet data alone can be used to infer the mass of the "missing particle" from the shape of the missing energy distribution. In particular, 13 TeV LHC data will have sensitivity to DM masses greater than ∟\sim 1 TeV. In addition to the monojet channel, NSI can be probed in multi-lepton searches which we find to yield stronger limits at heavy mediator masses. The sensitivity offered by these multi-lepton channels provide a method to reject or confirm the DM hypothesis in missing energy searches.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figure

    The Economics of Traceability for Multi-Ingredient Products: A Network Approach

    The consumption of multi-ingredient foods is increasing across the globe as consumers spend less time preparing meals. Traceability is now extensively used to reduce information imperfections in food markets and recent EU law suggests it will be implemented for manufactured meals as well. We present a model developed to understand how information on different ingredients flows through supply chains for multi-ingredient food products. The network model has three tiers linked by contracts for levels of quality and information.
