Detectors for Quantitative Electron Beam Voltage Measurements

Qualitative voltage contrast is produced without difficulty in any SEM. Complete separation of the voltage contrast from other sources of contrast is not a straightforward matter because of the nonlinear relations between the phenomena causing contrast and the video signal. Quantitative measurements depend on the availability of electron energy analysers which can detect accurately the shift in secondary electron energies due to potentials appearing on integrated circuit tracks, without being affected by transverse fields due to potentials on other conductors or insulators. The principles underlying existing detectors are explained, their effectiveness assessed, and a new form of electron detector is suggested

Analysing the Genetic Diversity of Ixodes ricinus ticks using Multilocus Sequence Typing

Ixodes ricinus is the most important human-biting tick in Europe and the principal vector of Lyme borreliosis. In addition, this hard tick species transmits a large number of microbial pathogens that are of importance to animal and human health. Little is known about the diversity and genetic population structure of I. ricinus across Europe. Genetic diversity of these tick populations may have implications on disease transmission. I. ricinus primers were designed for a number of mitochondrial genes and a Multilocus Sequence Typing-like Scheme (MLST) was devised. This was termed mitochondrial MLST (mtMLST). MLST has so far mainly been used for typing microbes, and the development of a MLST scheme for an arthropod vector is novel. Understanding the geographic structure of I. ricinus populations, in combination with studies regarding the migration of tick-borne microbial infections, e.g. Lyme borreliosis, is likely to illuminate important processes in the evolution and spread of tick-borne diseases.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo

A computer for solving field problems in electron beam devices

    Get PDF
The need is explained for a new type of computer for solving partial differential equations, the Digital Field Computer. The operation of such a machine for solving Laplace's and Poisson's equations is explained and circuits for its realisation, using incremental switching of magnetic ferrite cores, are given. Its operation is predicted by simulation on a Pegasus digital computer, which shows that it solves Laplace's equation correctly
