    Scalar Electroweak Multiplet Dark Matter

    We revisit the theory and phenomenology of scalar electroweak multiplet thermal dark matter. We derive the most general, renormalizable scalar potential, assuming the presence of the Standard Model Higgs doublet, HH, and an electroweak multiplet Φ\Phi of arbitrary SU(2)L)_L rank and hypercharge, YY. We show that, in general, the Φ\Phi-HH Higgs portal interactions depend on three, rather than two independent couplings as has been previously considered in the literature. For the phenomenologically viable case of Y=0Y=0 multiplets, we focus on the septuplet and quintuplet cases, and consider the interplay of relic density and spin-independent direct detection cross section. We show that both the relic density and direct detection cross sections depend on a single linear combination of Higgs portal couplings, λeff\lambda_{\rm eff}. For λeff∼O(1)\lambda_{\rm eff}\sim \mathcal{O}(1), present direct detection exclusion limits imply that the neutral component of a scalar electroweak multiplet would comprise a subdominant fraction of the observed DM relic density.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure

    Age as a risk factor for acute mountain sickness upon rapid ascent to 3,700 m among young adult Chinese men.

    BackgroundThe aim of this study was to explore the relationship between age and acute mountain sickness (AMS) when subjects are exposed suddenly to high altitude.MethodsA total of 856 young adult men were recruited. Before and after acute altitude exposure, the Athens Insomnia Scale score (AISS) was used to evaluate the subjective sleep quality of subjects. AMS was assessed using the Lake Louise scoring system. Heart rate (HR) and arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2) were measured.ResultsResults showed that, at 500 m, AISS and insomnia prevalence were higher in older individuals. After acute exposure to altitude, the HR, AISS, and insomnia prevalence increased sharply, and the increase in older individuals was more marked. The opposite trend was observed for SaO2. At 3,700 m, the prevalence of AMS increased with age, as did severe AMS, and AMS symptoms (except gastrointestinal symptoms). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that age was a risk factor for AMS (adjusted odds ratio [OR] 1.07, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.01-1.13, P<0.05), as well as AISS (adjusted OR 1.39, 95% CI 1.28-1.51, P<0.001).ConclusionThe present study is the first to demonstrate that older age is an independent risk factor for AMS upon rapid ascent to high altitude among young adult Chinese men, and pre-existing poor subjective sleep quality may be a contributor to increased AMS prevalence in older subjects

    Rotating BTZ-like black hole and central charges in Einstein-bumblebee gravity

    We obtain an exact rotating BTZ-like black hole solution by solving the corresponding gravitational field equations in Einstein-bumblebee gravity theory. Result is presented for the purely radial Lorentz symmetry violating and can only exist with a linear functional potential of the bumblebee field. This black hole has two horizons and an ergosphere which are dependent on the bumblebee coupling constant â„“\ell. We study the AdS/CFT correspondence of this black hole, find that the entropy product of its inner and outer horizons is universal. So the central charges of the dual CFT on the boundary can be obtained via the thermodynamic method, and they can reappear black hole mass and angular momentum in the bulk.Comment: 12 pages, no figure. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2201.0668

    An Innovative Continuing Nursing Education Program Targeting Key Geriatric Conditions for Hospitalized Older People in China

In China an innovative geriatric continuing nursing education program aimed at developing registered nurses’ understanding of the complex care needs of hospitalised older people with common geriatric conditions were conducted and evaluated. The program consisted of didactic sessions focused on evidence-based practice and unfolding case study designed to simulate the care trajectory of an older person with a hip fracture and key geriatric conditions. Findings from the program evaluations revealed a significant increase in attitudes towards older people and knowledge concerning common geriatric conditions. The satisfactory rate ranked by program participants was 90%. The study therefore drew the conclusion that effective geriatric continuing nursing education should target participants’ learning needs, support evidence-based practice and engage participants in active learning
