    Congenital agenesis of pubis and bilateral cryptorchidism: A case report

    AbstractINTRODUCTIONAgenesis of the pubic bone, as evidenced in the world literature, is a very rare clinical and congenital abnormality. Several disorders may occur with hypoplasia of the pubis.PRESENTATION OF CASEHere, we report a rare longer follow-up case of the congenital unilateral agenesis of the superior ramus of pubic bone with bilateral undescended testes, osteoporosis, cranial malformations, acetabular dysplasia, unilateral shortening of the lower extremity and an abnormal gait pattern.DISCUSSIONSomatic mutations may responsible for developmental abnormalities of the mesoderm from which the pubic bones and urogenital structures develop.CONCLUSIONAn isolated x-ray finding of ramus pubis agenesis may associate with cryptorchidism or several other urogenital malformations

    Effect of PEEK Polymer on Tunnel Widening After Hamstring ACL Reconstruction

    The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of the AperFix device (Cayenne Medical, Inc, Scottsdale, Arizona), composed of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) polymer, on tunnel widening after hamstring anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction as compared with 2 other fixation devices: the TransFix (Arthrex, Inc, Naples, Florida) and the EndoButton (Smith & Nephew Endoscopy, Mansfield, Massachusetts). Sixty-seven patients with isolated total ACL ruptures who underwent arthroscopically assisted reconstruction using hamstring autografts at the authors' institution were included in the study. Patients were assigned into 1 of 3 groups in a nonrandomized fashion: AperFix (n=18), TransFix (n=29), and EndoButton (n=20). Mean follow-up was 30 months. Tunnel widening measurements were performed on anteroposterior and lateral digital plain radiographs taken in postoperative week 1 and at final follow-up.     Iloprost Pretreatment Before Unilateral Nephrectomy: An Experimental Study in Rats

    OBJECTIVETo evaluate the effects of iloprost administration before unilateral nephrectomy on postoperative interleukin-6 (IL-6), nitric oxide (NO), and oxidant/antioxidant status.METHODSMalondialdehyde, glutathione, catalase and Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase were measured in the blood and remnant kidney of Adult male Wistar albino rats to asses oxidant and antioxidant status. The rats were divided into three experimental groups: sham group (S) (n = 12); unilateral nephrectomized group (N) (n = 12); an hour before unilateral nephrectomy iloprost (1 ng/mL/kg, intraperitoneal) administered group (IN) (n = 12).RESULTSIloprost administration before unilateral nephrectomy lowered oxidant parameters and IL-6 levels significantly. NO levels were increased in both N and IN groups.CONCLUSIONIloprost pretreatment before unilateral nephrectomy can reduce oxidative stress and IL-6, which increases due to anaesthesia and surgery and causes organ damage during surgery and in the short-term postoperative period

    The aim of this study is to assess the biomechanical advantage of adding strut allograft and the effect of its position on the construct in Vancouver type B1 fractures. Fifteen forth-generation synthetic femurs were used and created a fracture model at the tip of prosthesis, and subsequently fixated with a lateral plate only, lateral plate and medial strut, lateral plate and anterior strut. Rotational and axial tests were performed. In all loading tests, the plate with medial strut group was stiffer than the other constructs and had higher failure load values and had less displacement in the fracture site. A combination of a plate with a medial strut allograft provides more mechanical stability on periprosthetic femoral fractures near the tip of a total hip arthroplasty. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc.     Is acute compression and distraction superior to segmental bone transport techniques in chronic tibial osteomyelitis ? Comparison of Distraction Osteogenesis Techniques

    Treatment of tibial type ıv osteomyelitis with infected, necrotic, unstable bone segments includes débridement and segmental resection, which results in long bone defects. Segmental bone transport and acute compression and distraction techniques are two main distraction osteogenesis techniques used in the treatment of Type IV local tibial osteomyelitis. In this retrospective, four-center study we compared these two techniques during a 15-year period. 29 patients treated using segmental bone transport technique and 45 patients were treated using acute compression and distraction technique. The mean age (p= 0,34) and the mean bone loss with preoperative shortening (P=0,08) and the mean number of previous operation (p=0,06) were not different in these two groups. . At latest followup, functional and radiographic results were evaluated There was no difference between two technique on the Paley’s scoring system ( p=0,33) and in the total number of complication(p=0,16). Mean external fixator index was lower in the second group ( p=0.02 ). Both techniques can be used safely; however, the acute compression distraction technique may provide greater patient satisfaction because of shorter external fixator index
