The Hirsch Institute of Tropical Medicine
In 2013, the Hirsch Institute of Tropical Medicine was officially inaugurated as a branch of the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Infectious Diseases at Heinrich Heine University DĂŒsseldorf under the direction of Professor Dieter HĂ€ussinger. The HITM serves as a place of scientific medical knowledge transfer, postgraduate medical training, and of conducting scientific projects relating to tropical medicine and infectious diseases
Onwards and upwards: European Journal of Medical Research continues as an open access publication
The well-established European Journal of Medical Research has joined BioMed Central's portfolio of journals in January 2012, converting to the open access publishing model. Since its launch in 1995 the journal has been a print-only publication; from now on, it continues as an open access, online-only journal. The conversion to open access opens up the potential for the journal to become a leading, globally visible title in the field of general medicine over the coming years
Hypoosmolarity influences the activity of transcription factor NF-ÎșB in rat H4IIE hepatoma cells
AbstractThe influence of anisoosmolarity on NF-ÎșB binding activity was studied in H4IIE rat hepatoma cells. Hypoosmolarity induced a sustained NF-ÎșB binding activity whereas the hyperosmotic NF-ÎșB response was only minor. Hypoosmotic NF-ÎșB activation was accompanied by degradation of the inhibitory IÎșB-α. Protein kinase C, PI3-kinase, reactive oxygen intermediates and the proteasome apparently participate in mediating the hypoosmotic effect on NF-ÎșB. Hypoosmolarity plus PMA induced, amplified and prolonged IÎșB-α degradation and NF-ÎșB binding activity. Transforming growth factor ÎČ-induced apoptosis was diminished by hypoosmolarity. However, this anti-apoptotic effect was probably not related to NF-ÎșB activation
