    Work Roll Cooling System Design Optimisation in Presence of Uncertainty

The framework develops Meta models from a set of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of the roll cooling. A design of experiment technique is used to identify the FEA runs. The research also identifies sources of uncertainties in the design process.     EU Member States’ Consultation with Civil Society on European Policy Matters

    A study prepared in the framework of the European Union Democracy Observatory for the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC). The present publication is an integral part of a larger comparative study on EU Member States consultations with civil society on European policy matters. Following a call for tenders launched by the EESC, the EUDO Observatory on Public Opinion, Political Elites and the Media was commissioned to carry out the study under the direction of Didier Chabanet and Professor Alexander H. Trechsel.The objective of this study is to describe the EU national governments’ consultation with civil society at national level, Member State by Member State. To achieve objective 1, each country expert has carried out internet investigations. Additional research has been realized (such as analysis of policy-making documents, legal texts, etc.), as well as phone inquiries with governments and CSOs in order to better understand their system of consultation with civil society. As a general rule, the country experts have interviewed two members (or representatives) of two different CSOs operating in two different sectors. These interviews do not constitute a representative sample but have nonetheless enabled us to add more information to that already available through official documents, and to read it from a different, often relatively critical, angle. On the basis of the information gathered by the country experts, the two project coordinators - Didier Chabanet and Alexander H. Trechsel - have carried out the most accurate possible synthesis.     Multiepoch Radial Velocity Observations of L Dwarfs

    We report on the development of a technique for precise radial-velocity measurements of cool stars and brown dwarfs in the near infrared. Our technique is analogous to the Iodine (I2) absorption cell method that has proven so successful in the optical regime. We rely on telluric CH4 absorption features to serve as a wavelength reference, relative to which we measure Doppler shifts of the CO and H2O features in the spectra of our targets. We apply this technique to high-resolution (R~50,000) spectra near 2.3 micron of nine L dwarfs taken with the Phoenix instrument on Gemini-South and demonstrate a typical precision of 300 m/s. We conduct simulations to estimate our expected precision and show our performance is currently limited by the signal-to-noise of our data. We present estimates of the rotational velocities and systemic velocities of our targets. With our current data, we are sensitive to companions with M sin i > 2MJ in orbits with periods less than three days. We identify no companions in our current data set. Future observations with improved signal-to-noise should result in radial-velocity precision of 100 m/s for L dwarfs.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 24 pages, 7 figure

    Doping quantum dimer models on the square lattice

    A family of models is proposed to describe the motion of holes in a fluctuating quantum dimer background on the square lattice. Following Castelnovo et al. [Ann. Phys. (NY) 318, 316 (2005)], a generalized Rokhsar-Kivelson Hamiltonian at **finite doping** which can be mapped on a **doped** interacting classical dimer model is constructed. A simple physical extension of this model is also considered. Using numerical computations and simple considerations based on the above exact mapping, we determine the phase diagram of the model showing a number of quantum phases typical of a doped Mott insulator. The two-hole correlation function generically exhibits short-range or long-range algebraic correlations in the solid (columnar) and liquid (critical) phases of the model, respectively. Evidence for an extended region of a doped VBS phase exhibiting holon pairing but **no** phase separation is given. In contrast, we show that hole deconfinement occurs in the staggered dimer phase.Comment: 5 page

    Ab initio GW electron-electron interaction effects in Quantum Transport

    We present an ab initio approach to electronic transport in nanoscale systems which includes electronic correlations through the GW approximation. With respect to Landauer approaches based on density-functional theory (DFT), we introduce a physical quasiparticle electronic-structure into a non-equilibrium Green's function theory framework. We use an equilibrium non-selfconsistent G0W0G^0W^0 self-energy considering both full non-hermiticity and dynamical effects. The method is applied to a real system, a gold mono-atomic chain. With respect to DFT results, the conductance profile is modified and reduced by to the introduction of diffusion and loss-of-coherence effects. The linear response conductance characteristic appear to be in agreement with experimental results.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, refused by PR
