    Bilateral radial carpal bone luxation and its treatment in a dog

    Radial carpal bone luxation is rarely encountered in dogs. A literature review did not reveal any case of bilateral radial carpal bone luxation or its treatment. In the current case study, the process and result of the treatment of a dog with bilateral radial carpal bone luxation, brought to the Istanbul University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine's Department of Surgery is presented. Treatment of luxation was achieved by using screws and cerclage wire. The long-term follow-up of this patient was limited to only 2 months since the dog was not brought back to the clinic

    The Clinical and Radiological Evaluation of Medial Coronoid Diasease in Dogs: 20 Cases

    In this study, clinical status and treatment outcomes of 20 dogs, which were referred to Istanbul University, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, and Department of Surgery with the complaint of forelimb lameness and diagnosed with medial coronoid disease (MCD), were assessed. The diagnosis was made based on radiographic findings in 16 patients, on arthroscopic findings in 2 and on computed tomographic findings in other 2 patients. Arthrotomy aimed at removal of fragmented medial coronoid process and debridement of the surrounding tissues was carried out on a total of 20 elbow joints. Average functional recovery period after arthrotomy was 31 days and postoperative lameness scores on day 30 were "1" and "0" in 8 and 12 cases, respectively. Recovery rates on postoperative day 60 were detected to be moderate, good and very good in 9, 5 and 6 dogs, respectively. In the current study, treatment options were evaluated in the dogs with medial coronoid disease and the outcomes were aimed to be a contribution to veterinary practice

    The Clinical and Radiological Evaluation of Canine Cranial Cruciate Ligament Rupture Treatment with Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy

    Tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) is one of the tibial osteotomy techniques for canine cranial cruciate ligament rupture. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinically and radiologically findings of the patients with cranial cruciate ligament rupture treated by tibial plateau leveling osteotomy. In our clinical study, treatment of cranial cruciate ligament rupture in 18 dogs with a total of 20 stifles was performed. Cases were diagnosed with cranial cruciate ligament rupture, technical measurements for the operations are determined and the cases were prepared for the operation during the preoperative period of the clinical and radiological examinations. Following the operation, postoperative clinical and radiological evaluations were performed on the 10th, 30th, 60th, 90th and 120th days. At the end of the study, it was observed that the dogs retained stifle joint motion ability, early healing of the osteotomy side in the postoperative period, all stifle joint functions were retained after a period. It was determined that this method of operation can securely (in regards to joint stabilization) be performed on especially in large breed dogs

    Temporo-spatial and kinetic gait parameters in English setter dogs

    Walking analysis systems have begun to be used in veterinary medicine in recent years. The pressure-sensitive walkway is one of the systems through which we can obtain temporo-spatial and kinetic variables of walking. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the walking characteristics of English Setter dogs using a pressure-sensitive system. Twenty-five English Setter dogs were included in the study. Temporo-spatial and kinetic gait parameters were obtained with the pressure-sensitive walkway system. Centre of pressure values were taken separately for the forelimbs and hindlimbs and were statistically analysed. The force values in the forelimb were found to be greater than in the hindlimb during walking. According to the results of dynamic pedobarographic evaluation, the highest-pressure values were found at the 2nd and 3rd digital pads for the forelimbs and on the 3rd and 4th digital pads for the hindlimbs. During the stance, 64.58% of the weight was found to be on the forelimbs. No difference was found between the forelimbs and the hindlimbs in centre of pressure analysis. As conclusion, the gait data obtained from the English Setter dogs can be used in future research to identify animals that may have neurological or orthopaedic problems

    Evaluation of gait character of Akbas and Kangal shepherd dogs by using pressure-sensitive walkway

    In this study, it was aimed to evaluate which walking analysis data may be obtained for Kangal and Akbas shepherd dogs using a pressure-sensitive walkway (PSW) and which of these data may be used in the fields of veterinary anatomy, orthopedics, and neurology. Center of pressure (COP) analysis results of 46 dogs were examined. Distance type gait parameters of dogs were measured and their foot zone analysis values were recorded. It was observed that the pressure values applied by forelimb steps on the ground were higher compared to the pressure applied by hindlimb steps. The highest peak vertical force (PVF) values were observed in DP3 and DP4 for both forelimbs and hindlimbs. It was determined that the pressure value applied by metapodial pads on the ground were lower compared to digital pads and the PVF values of metapodial pads of the hindlimb were higher than the forelimb metapodial pad values. The correlation between weight and forelimb pressure values was higher than the correlation values between weight and hindlimb pressure values. With the pressure-sensitive walkway system used in the study, COP and foot zone analysis may be performed and distance gait parameters may be measured. It is considered that this system, in which more data may be obtained about the morphometry of walking, is more advantageous with its ease of use compared to other walking analysis systems. It is considered that the studies performed with this system would be a reference in veterinary orthopedic and neurology fields and would contribute to the development of the usage of pressure-sensitive walkway systems for dogs
