The contribution of corporate ventures to radical innovation
Established firms often face significant obstacles to innovation. As a solution, it has been suggested to form corporate ventures. Based on a sample of corporate and independent ventures in German manufacturing, we show that corporate ventures are more innovative than the control group, i.e. the independent ventures. In particular, corporate ventures are more successful at developing radical innovations. This effect, however, decreases with the ventures' degree of ownership concentration. We conclude that corporate ventures with a high ownership concentration are more likely to be controlled and monitored by their corporate sponsors, resulting in less favorable conditions for radical innovation. --corporate entrepreneurship,start-ups,radical innovation
Carbon monoxide pollution experiment
The experiment is designed to obtain data for the investigation of mechanisms by which CO is removed from the earth's atmosphere. The approach uses an orbiting platform to remotely map global CO concentrations and determine vertical CO profiles using a correlation interferometer measurement technique. The instrument is capable of measuring CO over the range of expected atmospheric burdens and of measuring trace atmospheric constituents

Farmers' perceptions of the lay health worker on farms in the Western Cape, South Africa
This study is focussed on farms situated in the Boland health district of the Cape Winelands, South Africa. The aim was to explore, understand, and describe the perceptions of farmers of having a trained lay health worker (LHW) on the farm. A qualitative study design was applied. Data were collected during six in-depth interviews and two focus group discussions with participating farmers. The results show that farmers remained positive about the concept of having a trained LHW on the farm, but became frustrated with the lack of recognition of their and the LHWs' contribution by the public health service. Farmers who are willing to participate and remain active are key to introducing a farm community-based LHW intervention. Evaluation of a new trauma-related drinking to cope measure: Latent structure and heritability
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) commonly co-occur, share latent genetic risk, and are associated with many negative public health outcomes. Via a self-medication framework, trauma-related drinking to cope (TRD), an unexplored phenotype to date, may help explain why these two disorders co-occur, thus serving as an essential target for treatment and prevention efforts. This study sought to create a novel measure of TRD and to investigate its indirect influences on the association between PTSD and AUD, as well as its potential shared molecular genetic risk with PTSD in a genetically-informative study of college students. A sample of 1,896 undergraduate students with a history of trauma and alcohol use provided genotypic data and completed an online assessment battery. The psychometric properties of TRD and how it relates to relevant constructs were examined using descriptive statistics and structural equation modeling. Results of a correlated multiple mediator model indicated that, while accounting for the effects of generalized drinking motives, TRD partially mediated the relation between PTSD and alcohol use problems (β = 0.213, p \u3c .001), consistent with the self-medication hypothesis, and that this relationship was stronger for males (β = 0.804, p \u3c .001) than for females (β = 0.463, p \u3c .001). Results were substantiated using longitudinal data. Application of quasi-Monte Carlo methods to PDEs with random coefficients -- an overview and tutorial
This article provides a high-level overview of some recent works on the
application of quasi-Monte Carlo (QMC) methods to PDEs with random
coefficients. It is based on an in-depth survey of a similar title by the same
authors, with an accompanying software package which is also briefly discussed
here. Embedded in this article is a step-by-step tutorial of the required
analysis for the setting known as the uniform case with first order QMC rules.
The aim of this article is to provide an easy entry point for QMC experts
wanting to start research in this direction and for PDE analysts and

Schottky barrier and contact resistance of InSb nanowire field effect transistors
Understanding of the electrical contact properties of semiconductor nanowire
(NW) field effect transistors (FETs) plays a crucial role in employing
semiconducting NWs as building blocks for future nanoelectronic devices and in
the study of fundamental physics problems. Here, we report on a study of the
contact properties of Ti/Au, a widely used contact metal combination, to
individual InSb NWs via both two-probe and four-probe transport measurements.
We show that a Schottky barrier of height is
present at the metal-InSb NW interfaces and its effective height is gate
tunable. The contact resistance () in the InSb NWFETs is also
analyzed by magnetotransport measurements at low temperatures. It is found that
at on-state exhibits a pronounced magnetic field dependent
feature, namely it is increased strongly with increasing magnetic field after
an onset field . A qualitative picture that takes into account
magnetic depopulation of subbands in the NWs is provided to explain the
observation. Our results provide a solid experimental evidence for the presence
of a Schottky barrier at Ti/Au-InSb NW interfaces and can be used as a basis
for design and fabrication of novel InSb NW based nanoelectronic devices and

Development of a breadboard model correlation interferometer for the carbon monoxide pollution experiment
The breadboard model of the correlation interferometer for the Carbon Monoxide Pollution Experiment has been designed, fabricated, and tested. Laboratory, long-path, and atmospheric tests which were performed show the technique to be a feasible method for obtaining a global carbon monoxide map and a vertical carbon monoxide profile and similar information is readily obtainable for methane as well. In addition, the technique is readily applicable to other trace gases by minor instrumental changes. As shown by the results and the conclusions, it has been determined that CO and CH4 data can be obtained with an accuracy of 10% using this technique on the spectral region around 2.3 microns
Combining goal-oriented and model-driven approaches to solve the Payment Problem Scenario
Motivated by the objective to provide an improved participation of business domain experts in the design of service-oriented integration solutions, we extend our previous work on using the COSMO methodology for service mediation by introducing a goal-oriented approach to requirements engineering. With this approach, business requirements including the motivations behind the mediation solution are better understood, specified, and aligned with their technical implementations.
