The TM4L environment enables the development and use of ontology-aware courseware based on the Semantic Web technology Topic Maps. In this paper we discuss its features in the light of authoring support, giving illustrative examples to highlight its use

    Smartbook: Semantics Inside

    Get PDF
This paper presents a vision for the future of the e-books which entails further development of technologies that will facilitate the creation and use of a new generation of "smart" books: e-books that are evolving, highly interactive, customisable, adaptable, intelligent, and furnished with a rich set of collaborative authoring and reading support services. The proposed set of tools will be integrated into an intelligent framework for collaborative book authoring and experiencing called SmartBook. The paper promotes the idea that the semantic technologies, intensively developed recently in connection with the Semantic Web initiative, can be incorporated in the book and become the key factor of making it "smarter"

    A Digital Repository Supporting Collaboration

    Get PDF
Today’s digital learning repositories are focused on the process of sharing materials created elsewhere. We propose a new type of digital learning repository which is focused on on-line collaboration. This new type of repository will foster an active community which creates and shares resources. It will use a mix of existing and new technologies to encourage users to communicate, contribute, and collaborate. It will be focused on the needs of instructors and be tolerant of differences of opinion

General architecture supporting component-based EIS interoperability

    Get PDF
Abstract. Web-based Educational Information Systems (EIS) aim at providing the learner with immediate, on-line access to a broad range of structured information in order to support more efficient educational task performance. Currently, more and more efforts are concentrating on bringing all those systems to work together in order to provide better support within the context of web-based education. Our goal is to approach the problem from a rather practical and somewhat minimalist perspective: to better utilize resources and components of already existing EIS we show how through communication protocols, we can realize a general modular architecture comprising components that can be shared and interchanged

Connecting and Sharing Open-Content Learning Resources

    Get PDF
While the number of learning repositories is increasing, there is no sufficient understanding of how to motivate and facilitate educators to share and reuse learning content. This paper proposes a framework addressing these challenges by integrating traditional approaches with Web 2.0 and Semantic Web technologies. It illustrates how the proposed approaches are used to implement LinkedCourse, a prototype repository for rapid collaborative development, sharing, and reuse of resources for emerging disciplines. The focus of the paper is on the collaborative annotation and community formation supporting the social framework of LinkedCourse

Easy Creation of Semantics-Enhanced Digital Artwork Collections

    Get PDF
In this paper we propose an approach for cost-effective employing of semantic technologies to improve the efficiency of searching and browsing of digital artwork collections. It is based on a semi-automatic creation of a Topic Map-based virtual art gallery portal by using existing Topic Maps tools. Such a ‘cheap’ solution could enable small art museums or art-related educational programs that lack sufficient funding for software development and publication infrastructure to take advantage of the emerging semantic technologies. The proposed approach has been used for creating the WSSU Diggs Gallery Portal
