On the Gauge/Gravity Correspondence and the Open/Closed String Duality
In this article we review the conditions for the validity of the
gauge/gravity correspondence in both supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric
string models. We start by reminding what happens in type IIB theory on the
orbifolds C^2/Z_2 and C^3/(Z_2 x Z_2), where this correspondence beautifully
works. In these cases, by performing a complete stringy calculation of the
interaction among D3 branes, it has been shown that the fact that this
correspondence works is a consequence of the open/closed duality and of the
absence of threshold corrections. Then we review the construction of type 0
theories with their orbifolds and orientifolds having spectra free from both
open and closed string tachyons and for such models we study the validity of
the gauge/gravity correspondence, concluding that this is not a peculiarity of
supersymmetric theories, but it may work also for non-supersymmetric models.
Also in these cases, when it works, it is again a consequence of the

Sensitivity-bandwidth limit in a multi-mode opto-electro-mechanical transducer
An opto--electro--mechanical system formed by a nanomembrane capacitively
coupled to an LC resonator and to an optical interferometer has been recently
employed for the high--sensitive optical readout of radio frequency (RF)
signals [T. Bagci, \emph{et~al.}, Nature {\bf 507}, 81 (2013)]. Here we propose
and experimentally demonstrate how the bandwidth of such kind of transducer can
be increased by controlling the interference between two--electromechanical
interaction pathways of a two--mode mechanical system. With a
proof--of--principle device \new{operating at room temperature, we achieve a
sensitivity of 300 nV/Hz^(1/2) over a bandwidth of 15 kHz in the presence of
radiofrequency noise, and an optimal shot-noise limited sensitivity of 10
nV/Hz^(1/2) over a bandwidth of 5 kHz. We discuss strategies for improving the
performance of the device, showing that, for the same given sensitivity, a
mechanical multi--mode transducer can achieve a bandwidth} significantly larger
than that of a single-mode one
Anomalous RR Lyrae stars(?). III. CM Leonis
Time series of B,V,I CCD photometry and radial velocity measurements from
high resolution spectroscopy (R=30,000) covering the full pulsation cycle are
presented for the field RR Lyrae star CM Leonis. The photometric data span a 6
year interval from 1994 to 1999, and allow us to firmly establish the pulsation
mode and periodicity of the variable. The derived period P=0.361699 days (+/-
0.000001) is very close to the value published in the Fourth Edition of the
General Catalogue of Variable Stars (P=0.361732 days). However, contrary to
what was previously found, the amplitude and shape of the light curve qualify
CM Leo as a very regular first overtone pulsator with a prominent hump on the
rising branch of its multicolour light curves. According to an abundace
analysis performed on three spectra taken near minimum light (0.42 < phase <
0.61), CM Leo is a metal-poor star with metal abundance [Fe/H]=-1.93 +/- 0.20.
The photometric and radial velocity curves of CM Leo have been compared with
the predictions of suitable pulsational models to infer tight constraints on
the stellar mass, effective temperature, and distance modulus of the star. We
derive a true distance modulus of CM Leo of (m-M)0=13.11 +/- 0.02 mag and a
corresponding absolute magnitude of Mv=0.47 +/- 0.04. This absolute magnitude,
once corrected for evolutionary and metallicity effects, leads to a true
distance modulus of the Large Magellanic Cloud of (m-M)0=18.43 +/- 0.06 mag, in

High quality MgB2 thin films in-situ grown by dc magnetron sputtering
Thin films of the recently discovered magnesium diboride (MgB2) intermetalic
superconducting compound have been grown using a magnetron sputtering
deposition technique followed by in-situ annealing at 830 C. High quality films
were obtained on both sapphire and MgO substrates. The best films showed
maximum Tc = 35 K (onset), a transition width of 0.5 K, a residual resistivity
ratio up to 1.6, a low temperature critical current density Jc > 1 MA/cm2 and
anisotropic critical field with gamma = 2.5 close to the values obtained for
single crystals. The preparation technique can be easily scaled to produce

The twisted open string partition function and Yukawa couplings
We use the operator formalism to derive the bosonic contribution to the
twisted open string partition function in toroidal compactifications. This
amplitude describes, for instance, the planar interaction between g+1
magnetized or intersecting D-branes. We write the result both in the closed and
in the open string channel in terms of Prym differentials on the appropriate
Riemann surface. Then we focus on the g=2 case for a 2-torus. By factorizing
the twisted partition function in the open string channel we obtain an explicit
expression for the 3-twist field correlator, which is the main ingredient in
the computation of Yukawa couplings in D-brane phenomenological models. This
provides an alternative method for computing these couplings that does not rely

Fast nucleon emission as a probe of the isospin momentum dependence
In this article we investigate the structure of the non-local part of the
symmetry term, that leads to a splitting of the effective masses of protons and
neutrons in asymmetric matter. Based on microscopic transport simulations we
suggest some rather sensitive observables in collisions of neutron-rich
(unstable) ions at intermediate () energies. In particular we focus the
attention on pre-equilibrium nucleon emissions. We discuss interesting
correlations between the N/Z content of the fast emitted particles and their
rapidity or transverse momentum, that show a nice dependence on the

Refining the Proof of Planar Equivalence
We outline a full non-perturbative proof of planar (large-N) equivalence
between bosonic correlators in a theory with Majorana fermions in the adjoint
representation and one with Dirac fermions in the two-index (anti)symmetric
representation. In a particular case (one flavor), this reduces to our previous
result - planar equivalence between super-Yang--Mills theory and a
non-supersymmetric ``orientifold field theory.'' The latter theory becomes

Wrapped Magnetized Branes: Two Alternative Descriptions?
We discuss two inequivalent ways for describing magnetized D-branes wrapped N
times on a torus T^2. The first one is based on a non-abelian gauge bundle
U(N), while the second one is obtained by means of a Narain T-duality
transformation acting on a theory with non-magnetized branes. We construct in
both descriptions the boundary state and the open string vertices and show that
they give rise to different string amplitudes. In particular, the description
based on the gauge bundle has open string vertex operators with momentum
