In most countries of Mediterranean Basin, Bactrocera oleae (Gmel), the olive fruit fly, is the key pest insect on olives. In Sicily this pest causes losses of fruits and a poor quality olive oil. Many researchers have recently carried out some field studies which were based on the use of kaolin and copper against the olive-fruit fly. In the last years these products have been effective several times in reducing olive fly infestation. Kaolin had, also, some important effect in reducing heat-stress in fruit crops and olive-trees. The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of kaolin and copper treatment on olive infestations in Sicily and to evaluate chemical and sensory parameters of oils extracted. For this reason, within 2003-2005, the IX Servizio of Assessorato Regionale Agricoltura e Foreste, selected some olive groves where to carry out trials with kaolin and copper and to realize information and divulgation activities

Transannular patching is a valid alternative for tetralogy of Fallot and complete atrioventricular septal defect repair

Objective: We report our experience with repair of tetralogy of Fallot associated with complete atrioventricular septal defect, addressing in particular the need for a pulmonary valve in the right ventricular outflow tract. Methods: Between 1992 and 2006, 33 children with tetralogy of Fallot and complete atrioventricular septal defect were admitted; 26 had Down’s syndrome (79%). Thirty-two children had complete repair (18 primary, 14 staged); of the 15 who received initial palliation, 1 died before complete repair. Right ventricular outflow tract obstruction was relieved by transannular patch in 14 cases (42%), infundibular patch with preservation of the pulmonary valve in 7 (21%), and right ventricle–to–pulmonary artery conduit in 11 (33%). Results: There were no hospital deaths. Actuarial survival was 96% 3.9% at 5 years and 85.9 1.1% at 10 years. Multivariate analysis showed that type of relief of right ventricular outflow tract obstruction did not influence survival (P ¼ .16), nor did the choice to use a valved conduit (P ¼ .82). Primary correction (P ¼ .05) and lower weight at repair (P ¼ .05) were associated with higher probability of survival. Mean follow-up was 69.3 5.9 months (range 0.2–282 months). There were 2 late deaths. Overall freedom from reoperation was 69% at 5 years and 38%at 10 years. Right ventricular outflow tract reconstruction without use of a valved conduit allowed a significantly higher freedom from reinterventions (P<.05). Conclusions: Tetralogy of Fallot associated with complete atrioventricular septal defect can be corrected at low risk with favorable intermediate survival. Use of right ventricle–to–pulmonary artery conduit can be avoided in two thirds of patients with no impact on survival, possibly improving overall freedom from reintervention

A 30-years Review on Pharmacokinetics of Antibiotics: Is the Right Time for Pharmacogenetics?

Drug bioavailability may vary greatly amongst individuals, affecting both efficacy and toxicity: in humans, genetic variations account for a relevant proportion of such variability. In the last decade the use of pharmacogenetics in clinical practice, as a tool to individualize treatment, has shown a different degree of diffusion in various clinical fields. In the field of infectious diseases, several studies identified a great number of associations between host genetic polymor-phisms and responses to antiretroviral therapy. For example, in patients treated with abacavir the screening for HLA-B*5701 before starting treatment is routine clinical practice and standard of care for all patients; efavirenz plasma levels are influenced by single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) CYP2B6-516G> T (rs3745274). Regarding antibiotics, many studies investigated drug transporters involved in antibiotic bioavailability, especially for fluoroquinolones, cephalosporins, and antituberculars. To date, few data are available about pharmacogenetics of recently developed antibiotics such as tigecycline, daptomycin or linezolid. Considering the effect of SNPs in gene coding for proteins involved in antibiotics bioavailability, few data have been published. Increasing knowledge in the field of antibiotic pharmacogenetics could be useful to explain the high drug inter-patients variability and to individualize therapy. In this paper we reported an overview of pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and pharmacogenetics of antibiotics to underline the importance of an integrated approach in choosing the right dosage in clinical practice

Alcohol consumption and employment: a cross-sectional study of office workers and unemployed people

Background. Alcohol is a psychoactive substance with toxic and addictive properties. Biomarkers like GGT, AST, ALT and MCV are influenced by excessive ethanol consumption. Alcohol consumption represents a health risk and it has been linked to unemployment. The aim of this study how working status predict alcohol consumption through a cross sectional study comparing alcohol-related biomarkers levels in office workers and unemployed people. Methods. This study includes 157 office workers and 157 unemployed people, who were recruited from January to December 2018. A propensity score matching procedure was applied to obtain two homogenous groups in terms of age and gender. A non- parametric analysis was performed on serum biomarkers that are generally altered by alcohol consumption. Logistic regression models were designed to evaluate how working status predict abnormal biomarker levels related with alcohol consumption. Results. No differences in median biomarker values were found between groups. Lo- gistic regression analysis showed that office work is a negative predictor of pathological biomarker levels. Office workers had a significant relation with the levels of GGT (OR 0.48; 95% CI [0.28-0.84]), AST (OR 0.42; 95% CI [0.22-0.78]), ALT (OR 0.39; 95% CI [0.23-0.66]), and MCV (OR 0.37; 95% CI [0.19-0.70]). Conclusion. Office workers had lower absolute frequencies of pathological values of alcohol consumption biomarkers, after matching for age and gender compared with unemployed people. In addition, a significant negative association between office work is a negative predictor of biomarker levels of alcohol consumption. These results showed that work is an important determinant of health and that can represent a benefit for workers in terms of reducing the risk of consuming alcohol
