Thermal Conduction in Systems out of Hydrostatic Equilibrium
We analyse the effects of thermal conduction in a relativistic fluid, just
after its departure from hydrostatic equilibrium, on a time scale of the order
of thermal relaxation time. It is obtained that the resulting evolution will
critically depend on a parameter defined in terms of thermodynamic variables,

The Wonder of Colors and the Principle of Ariadne
The Principle of Ariadne, formulated in 1988 ago by Walter Carnielli
and Carlos Di Prisco and later published in 1993, is an infinitary principle that is independent of the Axiom of Choice in ZF, although it can be consistently added to
the remaining ZF axioms. The present paper surveys, and motivates, the foundational importance of the Principle of Ariadne
and proposes the Ariadne Game, showing that the Principle of Ariadne,
corresponds precisely
to a winning strategy for the Ariadne Game. Some relations to other
alternative. set-theoretical principles
are also briefly discussed
On the nature of the magnetic ground-state wave function of V_2O_3
After a brief historical introduction, we dwell on two recent experiments in
the low-temperature, monoclinic phase of V_2O_3: K-edge resonant x-ray
scattering and non-reciprocal linear dichroism, whose interpretations are in
conflict, as they require incompatible magnetic space groups. Such a conflict
is critically reviewed, in the light of the present literature, and new
experimental tests are suggested, in order to determine unambiguously the
magnetic group. We then focus on the correlated, non-local nature of the
ground-state wave function, that is at the basis of some drawbacks of the LDA+U
approach: we singled out the physical mechanism that makes LDA+U unreliable,
and indicate the way out for a possible remedy. Finally we explain, by means of
a symmetry argument related to the molecular wave function, why the magnetic
moment lies in the glide plane, even in the absence of any local symmetry at

A Variational Fock-Space Treatment of Quarkonium
The variational method and the Hamiltonian formalism of QCD are used to
derive relativistic, momentum space integral equations for a quark-antiquark
system with an arbitrary number of gluons present. As a first step, the
resulting infinite chain of coupled equations is solved in the nonrelativistic
limit by an approximate decoupling method. Comparison with experiment allows us
to fix the quark mass and coupling constant, allowing for the calculation of
the spectra of massive systems such as charmonium and bottomonium. Studying the
results with and without the nonAbelian terms, we find that the presence of the
nonAbelian factors yields better agreement with the experimental spectra.Comment: TEX, no figure
Why does gravitational radiation produce vorticity?
We calculate the vorticity of world--lines of observers at rest in a
Bondi--Sachs frame, produced by gravitational radiation, in a general Sachs
metric. We claim that such an effect is related to the super--Poynting vector,
in a similar way as the existence of the electromagnetic Poynting vector is
related to the vorticity in stationary electrovacum spacetimes.Comment: 9 pages; to appear in Classical and Quantum Gravit
Lattice dynamics of palladium in the presence of electronic correlations
We compute the phonon dispersion, density of states, and the Gr\"uneisen
parameters of bulk palladium in the combined density functional theory (DFT)
and dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). We find good agreement with
experimental results for ground state properties (equilibrium lattice parameter
and bulk modulus) and the experimentally measured phonon spectra. We
demonstrate that at temperatures the phonon frequency in the
vicinity of the Kohn anomaly, , strongly decreases.
This is in contrast to DFT where this frequency remains essentially constant in
the whole temperature range. Apparently correlation effects reduce the
restoring force of the ionic displacements at low temperatures, leading to a
