Spices are known to add taste, flavor, aroma, color to food. These spices also have been the many traditional medicines in India and elsewhere to provide treatment to various diseases. Elettaria cardamomum is one of the spices used in traditional medicines for several diseases. It is used in treating various gastrointestinal, cardiovascular and neuronal disorders. The inhibitory activity of cardamom extract was studied on human platelets has also been reported. This review aims to highlight the ethno botany, pharmacognostic and pharmacological uses of Elettaria cardamomum. This review will also highlight the patenting trends and the new compositions developed using the actives from Elettaria cardamomum

Botanicals have become a very important part of our life and are increasingly used as a primary source of actives in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, nutraceuticals and personal care products. Extensive studies have been conducted on botanicals to understand their chemical profile and most of them have a history of safe use. Technical advances to isolate the bioactives, determine their molecular structure as well as their mechanism of action has generated considerable data and are available in the form of scientific publications as well as filing of patents. In this review, we aim to present the information pertaining to therapeutic applications of bioactives from different medicinal plants as disclosed in filed and granted patents to one of the largest publicly funded organizations in India namely Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). The review also presents an assignee focused analysis and provides insights into the level of patent filing activity in the area of bioactives and the therapeutic applications by CSIR, India. Such information can provide a valuable tool for exploiting a firm’s portfolio of patent holdings to assist decision-makers to identify the most valuable patents; product area or business opportunities among its own patent holdings

281-289Medicinal plants or herbs belonging to different traditional medicinal systems have been used as therapeutic agents for curing a number of diseases and infections. Hence, the application of such traditionally known medicinal plants and its phytoconstituents have increased considerably even in modern medicines. Bixa orellana L. — an Indian medicinal plant which belongs to the family Bixaceae is an Ayurvedic herb used since ancient times. This review aims to highlight the ethnopharmacology, pharmacological and cosmeceutical uses of B. orellana not only from scientific literature but also from patent documents. The prior art review of the phytoconstituents shows that B. orellana contains a wide variety of biologically active compounds such as bixin, norbixin, β-carotene, lutein, tocotrienol, tocopherols, sesquiterpenes, monoterpenes, etc. Pharmacological review revealed that this plant is useful as anti-inflammatory, anti-asthma, anti-bacterial, anti-diabetic, anti-convulsant, hepatoprotective, antifungal, anticancer agent. This review also highlights the year wise patent filing trends and the major assignees active in filing patents in this area. Such a review will provide useful insights for further biological or clinical investigations of the bioactive or active fractions from the plant
