Impact of the introduction of commercial purse- seine operations on the traditional fisheries of the Karnataka coast in India

    Get PDF
It was during 1977 that large -scale operation of purse тАУ seines started in India mostly along the Karnataka coast. No doubt this has substantially increased the marine fish landings , especially mackerel and sardines . But it has affected the traditional Rampani fishing which also exploits the same fishery resources . The paper makes an impact analysis of this development

Trends in the yield of exploited sciaenid fishery resources along the Indian coasts

In the present account a descriptive analysis is made on the recent trends in the yield of exploited sciaenid fishery resources along the coasts of India during the period, 1966-'84. The all-India state wise catch trends in the order of abundance during the period, 1966-'82 are summarized

The mud bank prawn fishery of Kerala - Declining trend

    Get PDF
The mud bank fishery, locally known as chaakara fishery is a unique phenomenon along the Kerala coast during the south-west monsoon period. The duration and the location of the fishery show slight variations from year to year. During the rainy season concentrations of mud occur in different areas very close to the shore, providing much calmer seas for operations of fishing boats in comparison to the stormy surf of the monsoon seas of the surrounding localities. In the years in which the fishery fails the condition of the entire population of fishermen who depend on and look forward to this fishery is deplorable. In view of the habits of these prawns of utilising the adjoining estuaries and backwaters of the area as their nursery grounds to a large extent, the increasing amount of exploitation of their young ones in the fishery in the inside waters may probably be one of the reason for the failure of the prawn fishery in the inshore and mud bank areas

Surveys conducted for the first time recently along the Karala coast have indicated the presence of seaweeds at the following locations: Mullur,Vizhinjam, Kovalam , Chilakaar,Varkala, Edava, Tankasseri, Thirumullavaram, Kovilthottam, Cherai, Azhikkal, Perumpally, Thekkodu, Pallithodu, Chellanam, Kandakadavu, Elathur, Kadalur (Nandi) Madapalli, Tharayi, Tellicherry, Pallikere and Kanutheertha

Socio - economic implications of purse seine operations in Karnataka

    Get PDF
The total marine fish production in India rose from about 0.9 million tonnes in 1969 to about 1.4 million tonnes in 1978. One of the major reasons for the increase in production is the mechanisation of fishing operations. The present account deals with the findings of an investigation to study the socioeconomic consequence on Rampani fishennen due to commercial purse seine operations in the Kamataka waters. The article incorporates some of the results of an earlier study (Dharmaraja and Jacob, MS) and the information obtained from a special survey in the Kamataka coastal villages recently conducted by a team of scientists of C.M,F.R.I. A perusal of the gearwise estimates of marine fish landings in the Kamataka coast shows that the landings from purseseines have been steadily increasing during the years 1977to 1979 (1st half)

On the index of abundance of flying fish populations in The inshore waters of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry

    Get PDF
Ifi the narrow coastal belt extending from Muthukadukuppam to Point Calimere in Tamil Nadu-Pondicherry region, the flying fish form an important seasonal fishery. The total landings fluctuate from year to year. The weighted index of abundance of flyingfish fishery was calculated for the years 1966 to 1970 and compared with the trends in the yields of the fishery during those years. The weighted index of abundance was the highest during 1967 and lowest during 1970, whereas, the landings were higher in 1968 and lower in 1970

Population studies on the fishes of the genus Chirocentrus Cuvier

    Get PDF
Four important morphometric characters namely, head length, predorsal distance, depth of body and pectoral fin length have been analysed in respect of the two species of Chirocentrus namely, C. nudus and C. dorab from the Palk Bay and the Gulf of Mannar around the Rameswaram Island. The method of regression was used and comparisons were made using the analysis of covariance to find out the significant difference in the regressions between the sexes and localities. The significance of the difference was tested at 1% level of probability. The results indicate that in the case of C. nudus the pectoral fin is longer in male than in female and that each species of Chirocentrus occurring in the two localities could belong to the same popu- lation

Effects of anaesthetics on the behaviour of mullet fingerlings and the scope of using these in different fishery procedures

    Get PDF
THE use of anaesthetics in fishery work, mainly in the transport of live-fish and also in handling fish for tagging, fin-clipping, weighing and stripping has been recognised by fishery workers everywhere. In live-fish transport, anaesthetics are useful in lowering the metabolic activity of fish, which facilitates the transport of more fish in a given quantity of water for a longer time. It has also been proved that anaesthetics make the otherwise time consuming work of tagging and fin-clipping much easier and also lower the mortality of the fish due to handling. Considerable effort has gone into a search for a proper anaesthetic and its different concentrations to give varying degrees of anaesthesia useful for works from tagging to transport of live-fish
