    Equalitarian Societies are Economically Impossible

    The inequality of wealth distribution is a universal phenomenon in the civilized nations, and it is often imputed to the Matthew effect, that is, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Some philosophers unjustified this phenomenon and tried to put the human civilization upon the evenness of wealth. Noticing the facts that 1) the emergence of the centralism is the starting point of human civilization, i.e., people in a society were organized hierarchically, 2) the inequality of wealth emerges simultaneously, this paper proposes a wealth distribution model based on the hidden tree structure from the viewpoint of complex network. This model considers the organized structure of people in a society as a hidden tree, and the cooperations among human beings as the transactions on the hidden tree, thereby explains the distribution of wealth. This model shows that the scale-free phenomenon of wealth distribution can be produced by the cascade controlling of human society, that is, the inequality of wealth can parasitize in the social organizations, such that any actions in eliminating the unequal wealth distribution would lead to the destroy of social or economic structures, resulting in the collapse of the economic system, therefore, would fail in vain

    Influences of intergrowth structure construction on the structural and electrical properties of the BBT-BiT ceramics

    Bismuth Layer Structured Ferroelectrics (BLSFs) have always been an important research direction of high Curie temperature piezoelectrical ceramics, and the construction of intergrowth structure has been considered as an effective method to improve the electric properties of BLSFs. There are many literatures about intergrowth structure improving electrical performance, but few reports analyze the influence of the construction of intergrowth structure on the internal defects and electrical properties in BLSFs. In this study, (1-x) BaBi4Ti4O15 - x Bi4Ti3O12 ceramic samples with intergrowth bismuth layer structure were fabricated by a conventional solid-state reaction method, and the mechanism of the influence of intergrowth structure construction on the structure and electrical properties of BLSFs has been discussed. The crystal structure, phase composition, microstructure, dielectric and piezoelectric performance, relaxation behavior and AC conductivity of ceramic samples were systematically investigated. It has been found that the construction of intergrowth structure can significantly inhibit the generation of oxygen vacancies. The concentration of the oxygen vacancies plays an important role, and its reduction will lead to the inhibition of grain growth and the increase of the relaxation activation energy of ceramics. In addition, the intergrowth structure construction also affects the symmetry of ceramics in the c-axis direction, thus affecting the electrical properties of ceramics

    Chinese Angelica Polysaccharide (CAP) Alleviates LPS-Induced Inflammation and Apoptosis by Down-Regulating COX-1 in PC12 Cells

    Background/Aims: Chinese angelica polysaccharide (CAP) is the main effective ingredient of angelica sinensis and exerts anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic effects on many diseases. This study aimed to explore the pharmacological potential of CAP on spinal cord injury (SCI). Methods: PC12 cells were pretreated by CAP and were subjected to LPS. Transfection was performed to alter the expression of COX-1. Cell viability and apoptotic cell rate were measured by CCK-8 and flow cytometry respectively. qRT-PCR and western blot analysis were performed to assess the expression changes of pro-inflammatory cytokines, apoptosis-related factor and core kinases in PI3K/AKT pathway. Results: LPS stimulation induced significant cell damage in PC12 cells as cell viability was repressed, apoptosis was induced and the expression levels of IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α were increased. CAP pretreatment protected PC12 cells against LPS-induced cell damage. Meanwhile CAP treatment reduced the expression of COX-1 even in LPS-stimulated PC12 cells. More importantly, COX-1 overexpression abolished the protective effects of CAP on LPS-injured PC12 cells. Finally, Western blot analytical results showed that CAP activated PI3K/AKT pathway also in a COX-1-dependent manner. Conclusion: CAP exerted anti-apoptotic and anti-inflammatory effects on LPS-injured PC12 cells via down-regulation of COX-1

    Racial/Ethnic Differences in Influenza Vaccination Coverage in High-Risk Adults

    Objectives. This study identified racial/ethnic disparities in influenza vaccination in high-risk adults. Methods. We analyzed data on influenza vaccination in 7655 adults with high-risk conditions, using data from the 1999 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). We stratified data by age and used multiple logistic regression to adjust for gender, education, income, employment, and health care access. Results. After control for covariates, White patients with diabetes, chronic heart conditions, and cancer had a higher prevalence of influenza vaccination than did Black patients with the same conditions. Similarly, White patients with 2 or more high-risk conditions were more likely to receive the influenza vaccine than Black patients with the same conditions. Conclusions. Significant racial/ethnic differences exist in influenza vaccination of high-risk individuals, and missed vaccination opportunities seem to contribute to the less-than-optimal influenza vaccination coverage in the United States
