    Offset fields in perpendicularly magnetized tunnel junctions

    We study the offset fields affecting the free layer of perpendicularly magnetized tunnel junctions. In extended films, the free layer offset field results from interlayer exchange coupling with the reference layer through the MgO tunnel oxide. The free layer offset field is thus accompanied with a shift of the free layer and reference layer ferromagnetic resonance frequencies. The shifts depend on the mutual orientation of the two magnetizations. The offset field decreases with the resistance area product of the tunnel oxide. Patterning the tunnel junction into an STT-MRAM disk-shaped cell changes substantially the offset field, as the reduction of the lateral dimension comes with the generation of stray fields by the reference and the hard layer. The experimental offset field compares best with the spatial average of the sum of these stray fields, thereby providing guidelines for the offset field engineering.Comment: Special issue of J. Phys.     Spin-transfer torque induced reversal in magnetic domains

    Using the complex stereographic variable representation for the macrospin, from a study of the nonlinear dynamics underlying the generalized Landau-Lifshitz(LL) equation with Gilbert damping, we show that the spin-transfer torque is effectively equivalent to an applied magnetic field. We study the macrospin switching on a Stoner particle due to spin-transfer torque on application of a spin polarized current. We find that the switching due to spin-transfer torque is a more effective alternative to switching by an applied external field in the presence of damping. We demonstrate numerically that a spin-polarized current in the form of a short pulse can be effectively employed to achieve the desired macro-spin switching.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figure

    Gilbert damping of high anisotropy Co/Pt multilayers

    Using broadband ferromagnetic resonance, we measure the damping parameter of [Co(5 \r{A})/Pt(3 \r{A})]×6{\times 6} multilayers whose growth was optimized to maximize the perpendicular anisotropy. Structural characterizations indicate abrupt interfaces essentially free of intermixing despite the miscible character of Co and Pt. Gilbert damping parameters as low as 0.021 can be obtained despite a magneto-crystalline anisotropy as large as 106 J/m310^6~\textrm{J/m}^3. The inhomogeneous broadening accounts for part of the ferromagnetic resonance linewidth, indicating some structural disorder leading to a equivalent 20 mT of inhomogenity of the effective field. The unexpectedly relatively low damping factor indicates that the presence of the Pt heavy metal within the multilayer may not be detrimental to the damping provided that intermixing is avoided at the Co/Pt interfaces

    Online data services at the Belgian Marine Datacentre

    Over the past few years, the Management Unit of the North Sea Mathematical Models (MUMM) has built up a centre of human and technical expertise oriented towards the management and the analysis of marine environmental data. The Belgian Marine Data Centre (BMDC) serves as national repository and processing centre for marine and environmental data and ensures a continuous and scientifically sound data flow between data producers and end-users of marine and environmental data collected in the frame of national and international research and monitoring programmes. The data cover most domains of oceanology as there are: physico-chemical, optical parameters, biodiversity, hydrodynamics, sedimentology, geography and human interest. Most of the datasets relate to the Belgian Continental Shelf, the Scheldt estuary and its surrounding areas.To promote the use of a high variety of data sets, different tools are constantly being developed and are presented on our website (www.mumm.ac.be/datacentre). An interface to the integrated database on the quality of the marine environment was developed. This database mainly contains the results of measurements and observations in situ and laboratory analyses of air, water, sediment and biota samples. Besides an extensive inventory of the database and an advanced request form with several selection criteria, some more straightforward queries and geographical selection tools are being developed for a faster and easier access to a specific dataset. Data can freely be downloaded. Once the data are obtained, a spatial analysis tool is freely and online available for the visualization on an interactive map. A lot of documentation accompanying the data is online available. The strongest feature of this system is the common underlying structure for different kinds and sources of data. This opens the possibility to compare biodiversity data, physico-chemical data, sedimentological data and historical data.Another database at MUMM, the real-time data acquisition system ‘ODAS’ stores the physical and chemical parameters measured onboard of the research vessel RV Belgica since 1984. The along -track data are published online shortly after the end of the measurement campaign together with all other information like the campaign reports, cruise tracks, … This is a valuable source of basic information for the scientists
