2001 National Lacrosse Finalist Plaque

Amidst a dusty trophy case in Bream Athletic Center sits a small plaque. It has a gold lacrosse stick and simply states: “2001 National Lacrosse Finalist”. Most people would walk by and never even notice the plaque, and if they did they probably wouldn’t think twice about it. However, upon delving into the history of the plaque I found a story of intense on-and-off-the field rivalries, the emergence of a national power, players learning to come together to overcome adversity, the culmination of years of building, and eventual heartbreak. The general who orchestrated the greatest amphibian invasion in history, and led Allied forces in the great crusade to crush Adolf Hitler’s armies, subsequently became a popular two-term president of the United States. In the annals of American success stories, it’s hard to beat the life that Dwight D. Eisenhower made. Yet this heroic figure was also a “natural man,” as one of the contributors to this volume of personal reminiscences suggests. Lady Dill was referring to Eisenhower’s humanity and lack of pretense. Unlike other leading figures of his day—including a certain five-star general who orchestrated the American island-hopping campaign in the Pacific Theatre during World War II—Eisenhower was relatable to the average man or woman, whatever his or her status, standing, or role. Assessing the Degree of Agreement Between Polarized and Unpolarized Densitometry in Offset Lithographic Applications

Automated color measurement systems have become significant components of offset lithographic printing presses for better process control and reduced job waste. In Europe, printers have broadly adopted polarized densitometry, which is uncommon in US standard operating procedures. It is recognized that some European press manufacturers provide automated color measurement instrumentation limited to polarized density readings. Introducing polarized densitometry into an environment where unpolarized densitometry is utilized can be problematic. The increasing significance of this issue has motivated print professionals to look for a solution. The present study applies the Bland-Altman method together with other statistical analyses to determine if a conversion between polarized and unpolarized densitometry can be established within a limited set of parameters. Three spectrodensitometers were used to record polarized and unpolarized densitometric readings of wet and dry process inks on coated and uncoated drawdown proofs. The results showed that coated papers had significantly less variation between instruments compared to uncoated papers. Wet inks also had more minor variations compared to dry inks. Furthermore, pure difference values and a Mann-Whitney U test indicated differences between unpolarized and polarized densitometric readings in all cases. Finally, t-tests performed on the resulting difference data for both unpolarized versus polarized and unpolarized versus predicted polarized showed fixed bias by means of the computed p-values. The primary conclusion of this study is that a single conversion method is not reliable in all contexts. The more variables that need to be accounted for in conversion, the less reliable the method becomes. The methodology for converting polarized to unpolarized readings presented in this study may be practical within the current parameters, but practitioners should take caution when applying the same or similar methods. Further research is encouraged using various inks, substrates, printing processes, and other possible conditions. Such studies could validate the current research while further examining the topic

Lean Construction Implementation: Case Study

Lean construction offers a collaborative approach to traditional construction practices and has the primary goal of increasing value to the client. With the proper use of lean construction tools on projects and the adoption of a lean culture, construction companies have recognized real benefits in terms of cost, productivity, and schedule while increasing customer satisfaction. The construction industry has been slow however in adopting the lean construction practices that have proven to be successful. The research in this study will familiarize the reader with the principles of lean construction, and address why the demand for lean construction is rising. In this case study, participants from two construction companies, a leading lean contractor and a non-lean contractor, were interviewed to evaluate the different lean construction “journeys” taken by each company. The interviews and analysis in this study primarily focus on the lean culture, use of lean construction tools, common barriers, lean education, and industry outlook from each of the companies. Suggestions for the future growth of lean construction were provided based on the interview responses

Devin J. Christensen analyzed media coverage of over 2,500 of Donald Trump’s tweets and found that those with the most inflammatory language were more likely to be highlighted. He warns that social media’s lack of editorial standards means its current use as a primary outlet for political communication threatens the future of American democracy
