Study on behavior of concrete encased composite columns under axial load

Get PDF
A Concrete encased steel (CES) composite column is an alternative to pure steel reinforced column. The application of such columns can be found in basement construction and metro railway stations. In this study, structural behavior of both partially encased composite (PEC) column and fully encased composite column (FEC) were investigated. A total of 12 specimens of partially encased steel composite column and fully encased composite column were analyzed. Analysis of columns was done in Ansys workbench. Steel profile used in the columns is H-section and cruciform section. The effects of some key parameters such as steel contribution ratio, end condition, and thickness of steel profiles on the performance of proposed column sections were investigated in terms of load-deformation relationship and strain behavior. Partially encased composite columns are found to be most efficient compared to fully encased composite columns. Flange thickness has a greater influence on load carrying capacity of the composite columns

Numerical Investigation on Cold Formed Steel Angle Section Portal Frames

Get PDF
Cold formed steel portal frames are widely used as alternative to traditional portal frames made from hot rolled steel sections. Load-displacement response of cold formed steel single C-section portal frames is available. C- section portal frames undergo significant deformation before reaching their ultimate loads. In this study, cold formed steel angle portal frame is analyzed using finite element analysis in order to find the load-displacement response. Bolt pressure is applied at the location of physical bolts in ANSYS. Keywords- Cold formed steel portal frames, fasteners, bolts, connections, Numerical modellin

Maintenance of the homeostasis of zinc (Zn) is very important in regulating bodily functions. There are over 300 Zn dependent enzymes identified, where Zn plays a structural or catalytic role. However, excess of Zn in a cell is toxic and free Zn ions are tightly controlled. Metallothioneins (MTs) are small cysteine rich proteins, which can bind up to seven Zn ions and act as a Zn reservoir. The MT2a isoform is predominantly found in the liver. My research focused on the overexpression of human MT2a in Escherichia coli and the investigation of Zn binding pathways of MT2a in vitro. At physiological pH, Zn is terminally bound to the cysteine thiols of MT2a, making bead-like structures (non-cooperative metal binding), while at low pH, Zn formed clusters bridging the terminally bound Zn (cooperative metal binding). These findings draw our attention to investigate how other essential and toxic metals bind to MT2a. Keywords: Homeostasis, zinc, metallothionein (MT), metallothionein 2a (MT2a), non-cooperative, cooperative, Zn binding pathwa

Comparing the effectiveness of liquid based cytology with conventional PAP smear and colposcopy in screening for cervical cancer and it’s correlation with histopathological examination: a prospective study

Background: Cervical cancer remains worldwide the second most common cancer among women and is unique among human cancers, entirely attributable to infection. Although routine cytological screening has resulted in large reduction in the cervical cancer burden in our country, still the incidence rates continue to be unabated for want of effective screening programs. Methods: This is a prospective study which was conducted in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The study included 200 women who were randomly selected attending gynecologyOPD and who fulfilled the inclusion criteria. All the selected patients were subjected to pap smear, LBC and colposcopy and histopathology done for suspected cases. Results: The differences of sensitivity and specificity between LBC, PAP smear and colposcopy in detection of premalignant lesions were analyzed using the chi square test. The sensitivity of LBC (89.5%) was significantly higher than sensitivity of PAP smear (47.37%). P <0.001. The specificity of PAP smear (95.06%) was higher than LBC (77.16%). The statistical analysis between LBC and PAP smear; LBC and colposcopy were significant (P=0.000<0.05).Conclusions: Liquid based cytology increases the sensitivity of cervical cancer detection and its ability to do molecular testing using the same sample. LBC also improves sample quality by reducing the number of unsatisfactory smears, reduces the number of false negative smears, causes reduction in interobserver bias and less time consuming

CARDIOPROTECTIVE EFFECT OF FISETIN ON LYSOSOMAL ENZYME ACTIVITIES OF NORMAL AND ISOPROTERENOL-INDUCED MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION IN MALE WISTAR RATS

Get PDF
Objective: This study aims to evaluate the cardioprotective effect of fisetin on change in the activities of lysosomal enzymes in isoproterenol (ISO)- induced myocardial infarction (MI) in male albino Wistar rats. Methods: Rats were orally pretreated with fisetin (30 mg/kg body weight) daily for 30 days. After the pretreatment period, ISO (100 mg/kg body weight) was subcutaneously administered to rats at intervals of 24 h for 2 consecutive days. Results: The activities of β-glucuronidase, β-N-acetylglucosaminidase, β-galactosidase, cathepsin-B, and cathepsin-D were significantly (*p<0.05) increased in serum and the heart of ISO-induced rats. Pre-treatment with fisetin daily for 30 days to ISO-induced rats significantly prevented these activities and restored their activities to near normal. Oral treatment with fisetin (30 mg/kg body weight) to normal control rats did not show any significant effect. Conclusion: We have concluded that fisetin protects the β-glucuronidase, β-N-acetylglucosaminidase, β-galactosidase, cathepsin-B, and cathepsin-D against ISO-induced MI. The observed effects might be due to the free radical-scavenging and membrane-stabilizing effect of fisetin
