Geriatrics and gerontology in Poland have not been still recognized by politicians and decision-makers. Despite of rationales, the geriatrics did not attain a deserved place at the National Health System (NHS). The rates of geriatric care in Poland are worse than in other European countries, mainly due to a long-term neglects of the health politics. The health and welfare system for the elderly in Poland seems to be disintegrated, incoherent, with poor accessibility to services for older people. Basing on a year-long medical expenditures of the Fund of Health Insurance, for persons aged 60 or more in Silesian voivodeship, it was shown higher cost-effectiveness (by 25%) of the geriatric care in comparison to traditional medicine. It might be concluded that "geriatrics", as a subject, should be brought into obligatory agendas of undergraduate education at all medical universities in Poland, as well, be included into training schedule for family doctors. Number of vacant posts in geriatric specialization should be increased, basing on Geriatric Departments and geriatric hospital wards. Reasonable financing of the geriatric procedures ought to be assured in order to protect against a collapse of the geriatric services’ network, and to improve an accessibility to services for the elderly. Comprehensive geriatric approach makes possible to combine a cost-effectiveness of public expenditures with better quality of care for the older persons. Geriatrics has a chance to bring savings to the NHS. A prompt development of the geriatric medicine seems to be a necessity - one should invest at this medical discipline.Polska geriatria i gerontologia mimo stosunkowo d艂ugiej historii nadal s膮 niedoceniane przez polityk贸w i decydent贸w. Cho膰 istniej膮 racjonalne przes艂anki do rozwoju geriatrii, ta dyscyplina kliniczna nie doczeka艂a si臋 zdefiniowanego miejsca w polskim systemie ochrony zdrowia. Funkcjonuj膮cy system opieki zdrowotnej i spo艂ecznej nad osobami starszymi w Polsce jest zdezintegrowany, rozproszony, niesp贸jny, z ograniczonym dost臋pem do 艣wiadcze艅 i nier贸wnym finansowaniem.

The study was designed to assess the antioxidant defense mechanisms, either enzymatic or non-enzymatic, in a group of sixteen centenarians (one male and fifteen female subjects aged 101 to 105 years) living in the Upper Silesia district (Poland) in order to evaluate the potential role of antioxidant defenses in human longevity. The results of our preliminary study showed that in comparison with young healthy female adults the centenarians had significantly higher red blood cell glutathione reductase and catalase activities and higher, although insignificantly, serum vitamin E level

We describe a case of a 24-year-old pregnant woman (35 hbd) who was admitted because of fast (240 bpm) supraventricular tachycardia which required electrical external cardioversion (transesophageal atrial pacing and drugs were ineffective). She underwent RF ablation during which a single RF application effectively cured atypical atrio-ventricular nodal tachycardia. The duration of fluoroscopy was 53 seconds. The child was delivered on time and with no complications
