    Geological setting of vertebrate microfossil localities across the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary in southwestern Saskatchewan, Canada

    The Frenchman and Ravenscrag formations of southwestern Saskatchewan, Canada, record an apparently continuous sequence of nonmarine clastic sediments across the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) boundary. Extensive exposures of these fossil-rich sediments occur in the Frenchman River Valley, near the towns of Ravenscrag, Eastend, and Shaunavon, and have been a focus of study since the 1970s. Despite this long history of investigation, a comprehensive account of the geographic and stratigraphic positions of many of the significant fossil localities has yet to be published. Given this state of affairs, the goals of this paper are to 1) document the geographic locations, stratigraphic positions, and lithologies of eleven key vertebrate microfossil localities, including several new localities that have been recently discovered and 2) provide an update on the status of these fossil localities, the majority of which have not been sampled in the last 20 years. Four fossil localities are known from the lower Paleocene Ravenscrag Formation, all of which are Puercan in age: Rav W-1 (Pu2), French Fry (Pu1), Croc Pot (?Pu2), and Pine Cree (?Pu2). With the exception of Rav W-1, which has since been lost as a consequence of quarry reclamation, all of the Ravenscrag Formation localities remain accessible and continue to be productive. Seven vertebrate microfossil localities from the upper Maastrichtian Frenchman Formation are reported here, all of which are Lancian in age: Long Fall, Fr-1, By Gar Gap, Hairpin, Wounded Knee, Wounded C, and Gryde. With the exception of Long Fall and Wounded Knee, which have been lost through reclamation or construction, all of the Frenchman Formation localities are accessible and remain productive.The accepted manuscript in pdf format is listed with the files at the bottom of this page.     A partial ornithischian dinosaur skeleton discovered near the Sustut River in 1971 has, to date, represented the only vertebrate fossil remains recovered from the Sustut Basin in northern British Columbia, Canada, but the geological provenance and age of this specimen has remained unclear. We provide new data on the age of this dinosaur specimen based on reconnaissance palaeontological prospecting along the Sustut River, and also report new vertebrate and plant fossils from this region. A skeletal fragment of a species of the turtle Basilemys Hay, 1902 was discovered at a site closely matching field notes describing the initial collection of the ornithischian dinosaur, suggesting that the new turtle fossil derives from the same locality as the dinosaur. Palynomorphs collected from this site include the marker taxon Pseudoaquilapollenites bertillonites (Sriv.), found in the lower Hell Creek Formation, and suggesting an age range of between 68.2 and 67.2 Ma for the locality. To the west of this locality we discovered multiple new fossil plant sites preserving wood and the leaves of Metasequoia Miki and several angiosperms, and one site preserved fronds resembling a species of the tree fern Coniopteris Brong., suggesting a Cenomanian or older age for sites in the area. The complex translational history of the Intermontane Terrane means that the newly discovered turtle may not represent a northern range extension for Basilemys, but it does represent one of the westernmost occurrences of this genus. The discovery of new vertebrate fossil remains in a region with relatively little accessible outcrop at present indicates the potential for future discoveries in the higher elevation outcrops of the Sustut Basin in this mountainous region of British Columbia.The accepted manuscript in pdf format is listed with the files at the bottom of this page.     Litho- and chronostratigraphic relationships of the Santonian-Campanian Milk River Formation in southern Alberta and Eagle Formation in Montana utilising stratigraphy, U-Pb geochronology, and palynology

    –Pb geochronology, palynology, and lithostratigraphy were employed on the Late Cretaceous rocks in southern Alberta and Montana to solve litho- and chronostratigraphic correlation problems. In the outcrop area around Writing-On-Stone Provincial Park, southern Alberta, the Milk River Formation has a Santonian to possibly very earliest Campanian age and was deposited between ~84.5 Ma and 83.5 Ma. In southern Montana, the Eagle Formation was deposited from ~83.5 Ma to 81.2 Ma, and contains different lithologies and depositional environments as opposed to southern Alberta. In north-central Montana, the Telegraph Creek Formation and Virgelle and Deadhorse Coulee members are equivalent in depositional environments and time to those of the Milk River Formation in southern Alberta. The upper Eagle member, however, has no time- or facies-equivalent rocks around Writing-On-Stone Provincial Park, but is time equivalent to the Alderson Member of the Lea Park Formation in southeastern Alberta. A hiatus of ~2.5 Ma is present between the top of the Milk River Formation in the outcrop area and the basal beds of the Pakowki Formation. The Pakowki transgression occurred at around 81.0 Ma based on a U–Pb zircon age of 80.7 ± 0.2 Ma from bentonite beds just above the bottom of the Pakowki Formation in southern Alberta. This age agrees with previous ages of 80.7 ± 0.6 Ma for the Ardmore Bentonite Beds and ~81.0 Ma for the Claggett transgression in southern Montana.Tobias HD Payenberg, Dennis R. Braman, Donald W.     Dinosaurs and other terrestrial vertebrates are poorly documented in the Mesozoic of the Canadian polar region. Here, we provide a complete review of the Upper Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) vertebrate fauna of the Bonnet Plume Formation in the northeastern Yukon Territory, Canada, which includes the description of the first newly collected dinosaur bones from this unit in almost half a century. Previously reported fragmentary dinosaur remains collected in the early 1960’s pertain to an indeterminate hadrosaurid. New material includes a poorly preserved forelimb bone and a pedal phalanx. These new remains pertain to at least one species of non-hadrosaurid ornithischian dinosaur, and the humerus is tentatively referred to a small-bodied basal ornithopod. The new vertebrate fossils from the Bonnet Plume Formation provide further evidence of vertebrates from this unit. However, directed field surveys in 2008 and 2009 suggest that vertebrate fossils are not abundant. A review of the known localities of terrestrial Mesozoic vertebrates from the Canadian Arctic indicate that it had a relatively diverse community of terrestrial vertebrates, including dinosaurs, during the Late Cretaceous, but emphasizes our limited knowledge of the Mesozoic Arctic and considerable potential for future exploration and discovery
