The historical linguistic conflict of the Cebuano people against the Tagalog-based Philippine national language has been evident in the literature written by Cebuano academics. However, there is no published empirical evidence that presents the on-ground language attitudes of the Cebuanos on the Cebuano, Filipino, and English languages. Employing mixed methods research, the researchers found that both generations predominantly use the Cebuano language for everyday communication. A significant difference was observed in the use of Filipino and English languages as the younger generation spoke it more than the elder counterparts. A language shift was also seen from Cebuano to English on the language used formal communication between the generations. Attitudes on everyday communication revealed that Cebuanos prefer to maintain their mother tongue as the language to be used in speaking with family, friends, relatives, and close people seeing that the younger generation has limited vocabulary on the Cebuano language. Respondents mostly favored English to be the language used for formal communication due to its stature as an international language and its association to high socioeconomic standing. A collective majority from both generations would also like to maintain Tagalog-based Filipino to be the Philippine national language

This paper is a pioneering study on the language use and preference of the Davaoeños from generations X (born in the years 1965 to 1979) and Z (born in the years 1995 to 2015) towards the Cebuano, Filipino, and English languages. Being a linguistically diverse area, Davao is home to the emerging contact language Davao Filipino which is currently spoken by the various ethnolinguistic groups currently inhabiting the city. This study utilized mixed methods research, particularly a survey questionnaire and focus group discussions, to explore the perspectives of the respondents on the said languages. Two generations were investigated in this study, particularly those belonging to Generations X and Z. Data presented show that both generations consider themselves fluent in the languages of interest in this study. They primarily use Cebuano for everyday communication and both generations primarily use English in formal communication. However, a language shift was seen from the common use of Cebuano by the older generation to the use of Filipino by the younger generation. This shift was also reflected in the language preferences of the respondents on everyday communication. Lastly, both generations would like to maintain Filipino as the Philippine national language as it is the language that they usually use when talking to Filipinos from other provinces who also speak different Philippine languages

This paper explores the thoughts of Emerita Quito, Claro Cenizo, Florentino Timbreza, and Rolando Gripaldo as contributions of De La Salle University to the development of Filipino philosophy in the cultural sense. These philosophy mentors are selected based on their textual productivity and on the fact that they retired from DLSU as full professors. Filipino philosophy in this paper is limited to the following discourses: logical analysis, phenomenology/ existentialism/hermeneutics, critical philosophy as an academic method; appropriation of foreign theories; appropriation of folk philosophy, revisionist writing, interpretation of Filipino worldview, research on Filipino values and ethics, identification of the presuppositions and implications of the Filipino worldview, and the study on Filipino philosophical luminaries. This exploration concludes with some assessments of the aforementioned philosophers \u27more specific impact on Filipino philosophy

Quito published her book The State of Philosophy in the Philippines in 1983. When the book was already out for fifteen years, I undertook a re-reading of its identified four clusters of reasons for the underdevelopment of Filipino philosophy, and hope for development in 1999, through an article “Re-Reading Emerita Quito\u27s Thoughts Concerning the Underdevelopment of Filipino Philosophy.” Thirty-six years after the publication of Quito\u27s book, and twenty years after the publication of my re-reading, this paper looks back again on Quito\u27s four clusters of reasons and hope, as well as on my re-reading of such reasons and hope, with the intention of sharpening our collective diagnosis on what continue to cause the underdevelopment of Filipino philosophy, as well as imagining more realistic pathways towards its more robust development. This paper, therefore, has two substantive sections: the first is an exposition of Quito\u27s four clusters of causes and hope, accompanied by my commentaries on such four causes and hope; and the second is my present critical reflection on Quito\u27s thirty-four-year-old diagnosis and hope, as well as on my twenty-year-old commentary. © 2020 Philippine National Philosophical Research Society. This paper compares and contrasts the taxonomies and periodizations of Filipino philosophy by seven Filipino scholars-Fernando Zialcita, Florentino Timbreza, Emerita Quito, Romualdo Abulad, Napoleon Mabaquiao, Rolando Gripaldo, and Alfredo Co-in order to determine the various philosophical discourses that are present in the country, and in order to pinpoint which of these discourses offer higher developmental potentials for Filipino philosophy. For each taxonomy and periodization, this paper looks into: (1) the period covered, (2) the inclusivity or exclusivity of the classification/configuration, (3) the taxonomizer/periodizer utilized, (4) the implied structure of the classification/configuration, (5) the problematic classes/periods suggested by the classification/configuration, and (6) the promising classes/periods suggested by the classification/configuration. This paper concludes with an attempt to synthesize the thoughts of these seven scholars in a comprehensive taxonomy of Filipino philosophies and to give an overall assessment for each of these philosophies\u27 strengths and weaknesses

This paper aims to understand how the stories or narratives on science were outlined in Questions magazine, an annual special publication of De La Salle University (DLSU) published by its Strategic Communications Office. It features research projects and creative endeavors of DLSU faculty researchers. Using framing theory, this paper analyzed the point of view, voice, and audience of the story as well as the visual elements, views of science and of society in selected articles published in the magazine. The analysis showed that the narratives in the magazine highlight scientific research that addresses the problems we face as a society and that are needed for the development of a country like the Philippines. It also showed the importance of engagement with research being implemented not just as an academic work but a collaboration of various experts and sectors to provide the right solutions and for a deeper understanding of our way of life. The study also showed that the articles in the magazine were produced to establish DLSU as a leading research institution in the Philippines while sharing the university’s research projects to a wider audience and responding to the need for an easier approach in understanding various scientific research

P-graph approach to planning human resource expansion for universities in transition

    No full text
In the developing world, many universities are currently in the midst of transition from being purely teaching institutions focused on educational and degree-granting functions, towards becoming more research-intensive organizations that contribute new knowledge. Such transitions are usually hampered by difficulties associated with resource constraints, excessively bureaucratic support processes, and, most importantly, a staff profile inappropriate to the increased demands of research activities. Thus, systematic approaches for planning human resource expansion in such cases can facilitate such transitions. In this work, a P-graph approach is developed as a decision support model for planning staffing levels in universities that seek to expand research activities. Different staff categories are represented as process units in the P-graph model, while interactions among staff categories are modeled as process streams. This methodology is illustrated with a hypothetical but representative example of a typical Philippine university
