Representations of processions in Zakynthos' painting

Thesis attempts to approach the topic of religious processions in Zakynthos’ mid 18th – late 19th c. according the group of paintings located in churches of the island as an original material. The representations of processions belongs to the narrative painting ; Apart the research of the iconographic model, we attempted to analyze a wider field of parallel topics on the religious processions that have been approached theoretically . The subject of the procession as a public ceremonial event gave the motivation for looking different issues. Thesis aimed to : α) the research of the historical origin of the iconographic model in the frame of the byzantine and post-byzantine tradition, especially in the frame of the European renaissance concept, particularly from Venice as paintings come from the Ionian islands, under the Venetian rulers- and how that concept is represented on the paintings and under what conditions. β) the iconographic approach of any particular features consisting the processions, i.e. religious, archaeological, architectonical, historical, ceremonial, social, ethnological, etc. Ζakynthos processions paintings consist a unicum of the Eptanisian School phainomenon as the iconographic type is developed exclusively in Zakynthos .Αντικείμενο της Διατριβής είναι ομάδα δέκα ζωγραφικών έργων από εκκλησίες της Χώρας και της υπαίθρου της Ζακύνθου που παραπέμπουν άμεσα στις πομπές των θρησκευτικών τελετών των λιτανειών στην Ζάκυνθο από τα μέσα του 18ου αι. έως και τα τέλη του 19ου αι. Επιχειρείται η παρουσίαση του εικονογραφικού τύπου των λιτανειών της Ζακύνθου στο σύνολό τους, ως πρωτογενούς υλικού . Στο σύνολό τους τα έργα εντάσσονται στη λεγόμενη αφηγηματική ζωγραφική, που εκτός από την μελέτη της εξέλιξης του εικονογραφικού τύπου, προσφέρουν παράλληλα ένα ευρύ ερευνητικό πεδίο θεωρητικών προσεγγίσεων και ερμηνευτικών αναλύσεων της λιτανείας. Έτσι το θέμα της λιτανείας δεν εξετάζεται αυτό καθ’ εαυτό ως αυτόνομο γεγονός δημόσιας τελετής, αλλά ως αφορμή και κίνητρο διερεύνησης ποκίλων ζητημάτων. Η προβληματική της έρευνάς περιστρέφηκε γύρω από δύο άξονες:α) Στην αναζήτηση της ιστορικής προέλευσης του εικονογραφικού τύπου, κατά πόσον δηλαδή αυτός εκφράζει μια αντίληψη στο πλαίσιο της βυζαντινής και μεταβυζαντινής παράδοσης ή μία αντίληψη που εκπηγάζει από τον αναγεννησιακό κόσμο της Ευρώπης, ιδιαίτερα της Βενετίας εφ’ όσον πρόκειται για τα βενετοκρατούμενα Επτάνησα, και πώς αυτή μεταφέρεται ή διαφοροποιείται στα συγκεκριμένα έργα και υπό ποίες προϋποθέσεις. β) Στην εικονολογική προσέγγιση επί μέρους θρησκευτικών, αρχαιολογικών - αρχιτεκτονικών, πραγματολογικών , ιστορικο-πολιτικών, τελετουργικών, πολιτιστικών, κοινωνικών και λαογραφικών στοιχείων, που χαρακτηρίζουν τις συγκεκριμένες λιτανείες. Οι Λιτανείες αποτελούν ένα unicum του κλειστού φαινομένου της Επτανησιακής Σχολής, εμφανίζονται να είναι αποκλειστικά ζακυνθινό θέμα, εφ’ όσον οι σχεδόν πανομοιότυποι σε σύνθεση πίνακες του συγκεκριμένου εικονογραφικού τύπου απαντώνται μόνον στον πολιτισμικό χώρο της Ζακύνθου

The 2005 Chios Ancient Shipwreck Survey: New Methods for Underwater Archaeology

In 2005 a Greek and American interdisciplinary team investigated two shipwrecks off the coast of Chios dating to the 4th-century b.c. and the 2nd/1st century. The project pioneered archaeological methods of precision acoustic, digital image, and chemical survey using an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) and in-situ sensors, increasing the speed of data acquisition while decreasing costs. The AUV recorded data revealing the physical dimensions, age, cargo, and preservation of the wrecks. The earlier wreck contained more than 350 amphoras, predominantly of Chian type, while the Hellenistic wreck contained about 40 Dressel 1C amphoras. Molecular biological analysis of two amphoras from the 4th-century wreck revealed ancient DNA of olive, oregano, and possibly mastic, part of a cargo outbound from Chios. Author(s): Brendan P.
