Synthesis of electrical networks interconnecting PZT actuators to damp mechanical vibrations

This paper proves that it is possible to damp mechanical vibrations of some beam frames by means of piezoelectric actuators interconnected via passive networks. We create a kind of electromechanical wave guide where the electrical velocity group equals the mechanical one thus enabling an electromechanical energy transfer. Numerical simulations are presented which prove the technical feasibility of proposed deviceComment: International Symposium on Applied Electromagnetics and Mechanics in honor of Professor K.Miya, Tokyo: 2000. 9 page

Equilibria determination of elastic articulated duoskelion beams in 2D via a Riks-type algorithm

The overall behavior of an articulated beam structure constituted by elements arranged according to a specific chirality is studied. The structure as a whole, due to its slenderness and geometry, is called duoskelion beam. The name duoskelion is a neologism which is inspired by the Greek word δύοσκέλιον (two-legged). A discrete model for shearable beams, formulated recently, is exploited to investigate its mechanics. A purposely designed numerical scheme, adapting the Riks rationale, is used to calculate large displacement and deformation equilibria of duoskelion beams. Aimed at computing the current step correction, the Riks arc-length method is modified and made more efficient by applying a specific orthogonality condition, defined via the stiffness matrix, to an adapted extrapolation step. The robustness of the resulting scheme and its capability to follow equilibrium branches allows, in principle, for the exploration of the whole set of local energy minima in the introduced space of configurations, by using suitably modulated perturbative external loads. The developed numerical tool can be used to understand the mechanics of duoskelion beams. It is proved that there exists a stable principal equilibrium branch in which only compression is observed for any compression load. Additional stable equilibrium branches are found in compression such that the clamped–clamped compressed beam assumes a characteristic S shape which, upon reaching a critical load, is significantly amplified. A mechanically relevant stable equilibrium is also found in extension, being observed the S-shaped configuration experimentally found in Misra et al. (2020)

A macroscale hydrogeological numerical model of the Suio hydrothermal system (Central Italy)

The complex behaviour of the Suio hydrothermal system (central Italy) and its potential exploitation as a renewable energy source are still unclear. To quantitatively evaluate the geothermal resource, the Suio hydrothermal system has been investigated with a hydrogeological numerical model that couples fluid flow, thermal convection, and transport of diluted species inside a hybrid continuum-discrete medium. The numerical model, calibrated and validated with available and new experimental data, unveiled the complex behaviour of the hydrothermal system. The normal tectonic displacements, the fracturing of the karst hydrostructure, and the aquitard distribution strongly influence the hydrothermal basin. In particular, a dual fluid circulation, sustained by steady-state thermal and pressure gradients, modulates the hydrothermalism at the several springs and wells. The presence of a medium to a low-temperature reservoir allows for potential exploitation of the geothermal resource

Potential for building Façade-integrated solar thermal collectors in a highly urbanized context

    Get PDF
Development of technologies, materials, support systems, and coatings has made the integration of solar thermal systems into the building envelope increasingly possible. Solar thermal collectors can either be directly integrated, substituting conventional roof or façade covering materials, or constitute independent devices added to a roof or façade structure. Aimed at estimating the real effectiveness of building-integrated solar systems for domestic heat water (DHW) production or for heating integration, when horizontal or inclined pitches on buildings are not applicable, the authors analyze a case study with different scenarios, taking into account the issues connected to a highly urbanized context in the Mediterranean climate. A GIS model was used for estimating the energy balance, while the real producibility of the simulated systems was calculated by a dynamic hourly simulation model, realized according to ISO 52016. The savings in terms of primary energy needs obtained by installing solar thermal systems on the facade are presented, and the differences between the cases in which the system is used for DHW production only and for space heating too are distinguished and discussed. The evaluated potential is quantified in the absence of roof collectors, despite their high potential in the Mediterranean region, in order to better appreciate the effects induced by integrated facade systems

A novel measurement method for accurate heat accounting in historical buildings

    Get PDF
Nowadays, two different heat accounting methods are available: the direct method, based on heat meters, and the indirect one, based on heat cost allocators. Unfortunately, in existing buildings, due to the plant configuration, heat meters are often technically unfeasible or not cost efficient, whereas heat cost allocators can be easily installed in almost all conditions. At the same time, the indirect method relies on a high number of interconnected devices with installation and operative conditions often variable within the same building and influencing the on-field metrological performances. In this paper, the authors propose a novel "hybrid" method for accurate heat accounting combining the advantages of indirect method with the higher accuracy typical of direct methods. The proposed method has been experimented at INRIM, the primary metrology institute in Italy, assessing the on-field performance in a virtual eight-apartments building. The experimental results show that the proposed method always presents improved accuracy. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved
