    The Electromigration Force in Metallic Bulk

    The voltage induced driving force on a migrating atom in a metallic system is discussed in the perspective of the Hellmann-Feynman force concept, local screening concepts and the linear-response approach. Since the force operator is well defined in quantum mechanics it appears to be only confusing to refer to the Hellmann-Feynman theorem in the context of electromigration. Local screening concepts are shown to be mainly of historical value. The physics involved is completely represented in ab initio local density treatments of dilute alloys and the implementation does not require additional precautions about screening, being typical for jellium treatments. The linear-response approach is shown to be a reliable guide in deciding about the two contributions to the driving force, the direct force and the wind force. Results are given for the wind valence for electromigration in a number of FCC and BCC metals, calculated using an {\it ab initio} KKR-Green's function description of a dilute alloy.Comment: 14 pages, 1 Postscript figur

    Famas-NewCon: A generator program for stacking in the reference case

    The FAMAS-Newcon project aims at developing new logistic control structures for a containerterminal capable of handling jumbo container ships within 24 hours. In one of the subprojectsstacking aspects is studied. This report describes a generator model in which on the basis of a global description arrival and departure moments of individual containers are generated for a medium term (15 weeks). The global description consists of a specification of the modal split in terms of containers handled by jumbo's, deepsea, shortsea, rail, barge and trucks, next a specification of the number and type of containers transported by an individual jumbo and deepsea and finally a specification of the dwell time. The output of the generator program is a file with the following container information: arrival and departure times,import/export modality and the import/export ship in case that is a deepsea or jumbo. This file serves as the input of a stacking program which is described in a sequel report. The advantage of this construction is that several stacking strategies can be compared with the same arrival and departures of containers.generator program;stacking;logistic control structures

    Schrodinger Equation for Particle with Friction

    A new quantum mechanical wave equation describing a particle with frictional forces is derived. It depends on a parameter α\alpha whose range is determined by the coefficient of friction Îł\gamma, that is, 0≀α≀γ0 \leq \alpha \leq \gamma. For one extreme value of this parameter, α=0\alpha = 0, we recover Kostin's equation. For the other extreme value, α=Îł\alpha = \gamma, we obtain an equation in which friction manifests in "magnetic" type terms. It further exhibits breakdown of translational invariance, manifesting through a symmetry breaking parameter ÎČ\beta, as well as localized stationary states in the absence of external potentials.     Electronic Transport Spectroscopy of Carbon Nanotubes in a Magnetic Field

    We report magnetic field spectroscopy measurements in carbon nanotube quantum dots exhibiting four-fold shell structure in the energy level spectrum. The magnetic field induces a large splitting between the two orbital states of each shell, demonstrating their opposite magnetic moment and determining transitions in the spin and orbital configuration of the quantum dot ground state. We use inelastic cotunneling spectroscopy to accurately resolve the spin and orbital contributions to the magnetic moment. A small coupling is found between orbitals with opposite magnetic moment leading to anticrossing behavior at zero field.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

    In 2015/16 Tate organised a series of virtual discussions related to the preservation of softwarebased art as part of Tate’s partnership in PERICLES, a European‐funded project which focuses on the long‐term digital conservation and preservation of digital resources, with particular focus on actively managing change and risk as part of this process. The idea for this series arose from the realisation that managing technical change in software‐based art is not only a common concern for practitioners working in the field but also of interest to the research community. A group of engaged expert practitioners and researchers were invited to consider a set of topics at the core of the conservation of software‐based artworks. Six discussion sessions were organised over a period of one year. This report summarises the outcomes of these meetings and examines some of the key points

    Inventory control of spare parts using a Bayesian approach: a case study

    This paper presents a case study of applying a Bayesian approach to forecast demand and subsequently determine the appropriate parameter S of an (S-1,S) inventory system for controlling spare parts of electronic equipment. First, the problem and the current policy are described. Then, the basic elements of the Bayesian approach are introduced and the procedure for calculating the appropriate parameter S is illustrated. Finally, we present the results of applying the Bayesian approach in an innovative way to determine the stock levels of three types of circuit packs at several locations.
